  • Originally, these multipurpose tools were called Schweizer Offiziers-und Sportsmesser, but that name was too clunky and was eventually shortened to ‘Swiss Army knife’ by American soldiers.

The first step in the the production process is to stamp the raw material to create the different parts of the knife. This is followed by a polishing process in which the metal blades are tossed into a container full of ceramic stones and then pulled out by a magnet. In order to harden it, the metal sits on a conveyor belt and goes through an oven.
“Inside we have a temperature of 1,050 degrees,” says senior product marketing manager at Victorinox, Urs Wyss. “This heat changes the structure of the steel.” The metal then gets ground to ensure sharpness and assembly continues.
Victorinox was started by Elsener’s great grandfather, Karl, in 1884 and continues to be run as a family business out of Schwyz, Switzerland today.

"Swiss army knife, never leave the planet without one." Should be the company slogan if not already.

Personally have a Swiss Army knife which was given to me over 40 years ago - wherever I go, my knife goes with me, and I also have a "smaller" one which my late mother always carried with her - she passed on in August 1996 at the age of 84. I will be 87 in March, but when I go, I somehow don't think I'll be able to take my knife with me then...

I have a small swiss army knife attached to my keychain and people ask me "why", my answer always is "you don´t know how much you need it until you have one".

Victorinox sets aside some profits during good years just so they never have to lay off any employees in the bad years.

They also heavily diversified their product line away from just knives which has kept there cash flow a lot more stable.

In addition, Switzerland has strong workers rights including a system called “Kurtzarbeit” or “short work”. It allows employers to temporarily furlough employees at 80% pay for a short period. It was very effective during COVID, enabling employers to save money without cutting jobs. As an employee, it was clear what will be our income, without hoping for government bailouts subject to whims of politicians. Workers rights are human rights!

Victorinox kept the Wenger brand going too which was a competitor, and my great grandfather was a Wenger from Switzerland. I keep a Victorinox Waiter on my keychain. It comes in handy and takes up no space, it has opened many a wine bottles for me when we used to go out for dinner pre-pandemic. The only thing I wish it had was a locking blade, so I do carry another knife at times. The larger combo knives are great for camping or fishing.

I’d love one of their locking blade knives but it is a criminal offence to carry a lockknife in the UK.

I have carried and used Swiss Army Knives since I was gifted on upon graduation from Basic training and Infantry school at Ft Benning Ga USA for the US Army. Since then I’ve used and collected many and will continue to the rest of my life. Some of my favorites are the Soldier models now discontinued, and the Swiss Champ and the Tinker and Farmer.

I have carried one since I bought my first one at Ft.Leonard Wood during Basic training in 1989. I have a soldier model dated 05 that was given to me by a good friend from Switzerland. I carry an Alox Pioneer which is the same as the soldier model that I bought at the Victorinox store in NYC.

If they wear out you can just send them back to your distributor. They will sharpen blades and replace worn tools and won’t charge you a penny. If the distributor can’t do it they will actually send the knife back to Switzerland. It’s amazing that they will do this, for nothing rather than just say “oh buy another knife” and give personal attention to a an item of which they make thousands a day. They really care about their product quality.

What do you mean? The one Swiss soldiers don't get issued isn't red???
Actually all Swiss soldiers do get issued a Victorinox Soldier knife, the current one is 111mm with green handles (the One Handed Trekker). The previous model was 93mm alox handles (now called the Pioneer)
