Just some perspective. When it comes to buying dairy (eggs, milk, butter) given that prices are high for everything, do your community a favor. Buy from local dairies. Support farms in your area. I’m finding local dairy costs are now much the same as the mega brands. Same with produce. Buy local, in season - especially if it’s on sale.

My grocery list includes my meal plan at the bottom. If I can't get ingredients or don't want to purchase an item because of the price I can see which meal is impacted and switch out the meal or adjust it. I also write my grocery list in groupings; dairy in one group, meat/poultry, veggies and fruits. It's easier to shop and keep track of the costs. Lastly, I start shopping in the meat/poultry section. Those deals and substitutions tend to have the biggest impact on whether I change a meal plan. Easier to swap a different veg, pasta, etc. for the expense/unavailable planned items.

I can say that lately I've found whole pork tenderloins on sale for 1.49/pound and the butcher will slice and tenderize free.... I have a lot of pork tenderloin in my freezer for sure! I've also found whole beef tenderloins they've recently frozen for 5.49/pound that is 100% USA and stocked up on it. That's cheaper than the burger atm! About every 5-6 weeks one of my grocery store will run a .99/lb sale on while chickens, and then I buy the limit (usually 2). I know and understand that yes some limits are because of it, but come on last year beef and pig farmers here were having to give meat away because of the government not allowing them to sell it, how is that related to the pandemic? I came here to say the same thing. Gas was $5.20 when I gassed up to drive to LA for medical treatment, & it had gone up by 20 cents overnight. These days, every little drop of gas is precious. I can’t even imagine going on a road trip any time soon.

I have a hard time with frozen fruits. They become mushy when defrosted because of the water from the ice. Unless you're making smoothies or baking something with them, they're not great. I find it impossible to eat them like I would fresh fruit.

Found whole pork tenderloin on sale for 1.49 and whole beef tenderloin frozen by the meat dept for 5.49 (labeled born, raised and harvested in the usa! This is less than the burger!) and the butcher will cut and tenderize for you free! I bought zip loc bags and separated it all into meals for the family. My freezer is stocked tight with beef and pork right now! Also, I don't buy the fresh veggies but go to the freezer section and by the store's cheapest brand... "Always Save", huge bags of different veggies for 2.19 per bag! Separate into meal sizes and put them in the freezer and it ends up being around 65 cents per meal for several people!

I buy twin pack whole chicken at Sam's. I make tons of home made stock, chicken noodle soup, other soups. Save the wings and other parts for other kind of meals.
Bread makes me bloated and I don't like soda. I don't buy junk food. When I eat well i don't crave as much. Bulk/bag your own section is cheaper too for rice, beans, etc.
I have titanium pans that are easy to clean, lasts forever and no chemicals!

I went to Aldie's 3 days ago. Boneless chx breast 1.99lb, gal of 2% milk 2.55, doz of lg. eggs 1.79. It does pay to be flexible checking flyer's, meal planning, and checking freezer, pantry, and refrig for things to use up. The soda I get is still .99 for a 2 L so I still get my 1 per week. Not flexible on that so far!

Great video. If I may add with the flexibility, cut back/out expensive items. You can get by with less dairy or none at all. You don’t need dairy to make homemade pancakes or waffles. There are so many recipes that are dairy and meat free.

I’m scouring ads and only buying the loss leaders, shopping out of my well stocked pandemic pantry, and seed starting a heck of a garden this year. Learned to can and dehydrate last year so will be preserving everything. Nothing wasted this year. More scratch cooking. No choice with escalating gas prices. I did pick up a locking gas cap because I’m old enough to remember the gas lines in the 70s and how siphoning gas was a real thing. Desperate times. Blessings you all.

Ugh. i'm so thankful to live in a city that has free public transportation! I pay a little more in rent to live in the city center (in a sort of rent controlled apartment) but I am across the street from 20 bus lines and can get to all sorts of places for free. The pandemic does make it nerve wracking as I don't have health insurance right now (whole other can of worms!) but I think i'm going to have to stop with grocery delivery and go back to shopping the loss leaders every week at a few different stores. For now, I have an insane bean stockpile but no Instant Pot... so that can be a little frustrating!

About the non-organic, frozen raspberries .....the stores around here are getting pretty good at sliding price tags and products to cover up products they are having troubles sourcing rather than leaving empty shelf space. In part, it is because they have no idea when product will arrive at the store. Or, they are able to source produce but not at prices they think thier customer base will pay..... like the fresh raspberries and avocados.

My son's friends used to stop me at the grocery store and asked me what they should buy because they had heard that I grocery shop of course I had fed all of them growing up. It was kind of fun to teach them in the middle of the store but I wanted a steak well don't get it this week or I wanted to grill out hamburgers well see if frozen or precious best you gave many of the same tips that I gave these kids growing up I hope they remember them and yes the coupons and the digitals are fantastic. I had a pretty well-rounded pantry and got so I could pretty much just shop the deals at the store and make a week or maybe two weeks worth of meals out of that. You do a very good job of explaining

You can make cream cheese with plain full fat yogurt. Just dump the yogurt in cheese clothe in a strainer that is on top of a bowl. Let the liquid drain into the bowl for 24 hours in your refrigerator. Take the cheese and place on a plate. Keep the liquid whey. It's great for tenderizing meat or in things for health benefits.

I don't buy if it's not on sale period, so looking at prices without a sale almost caused a heart attack. Last Friday I bought berries on sale for 99c for 6oz, raspberries and blackberries, and a full pint of blueberries. Our milk is currently on sale for 87c a half gallon, but varies from store to store around $3 a half gallon. Eggs are $1.50/dozen. Pork butt is 99c/lb potatoes were $1.47/5lbs for Yukon Gold or Red, Russets were 3.99 for 8lbs. But regular price can be nearly triple on some things especially if you cross from off brand generic to regular price name brand of things.

Wow, these prices are high for almost all sections. And, I live in the Seattle area. I've become very careful about my grocery shopping. 1.weekly pantry/fridge inventory first. 2.look at deals online for the week 3. clip electronic coupons (I only shop at a couple of places) 4. make my list 5. shop, stay focused, don't browse 6. build my healthy menu for the week (from a set meals list). That's it. I can't afford to spend a lot of time and gas searching or planning and cooking elaborate stuff. I shop primarily at Kroger chain and Trader Joe's. Some Amazon.

    • @fragilefleur

Same. I am in Issaquah (near Seattle for those who aren’t aware) and mostly best prices are at Fred meyers, some qfc and Safeway is a joke. I was amazed that a bag of frozen basic broccoli at Safeway was almost $3 and I can get it for a buck a bag at Freddie’s. I am wondering what you find more cheaply at TJ’s. I think I remember spaghetti sauce there was a good price. Also occasionally Costco has great prices on some basic items in bulk of course. I shop store brands now for many canned foods, I like to use ground Turkey and have found buying it in the plastic tube sleeve is way cheaper than in the flat styrofoam and plastic wrapped containers for same product in some brands. Oh also target has some good prices and dollar (now $1.25) store and Big Lots for basic spices or pantry staples are occasionally a great deal. I use Amazon fresh a lot and certain items are cheaper like fresh lettuce, bell peppers, etc. def helps to buy what’s in season but also relying on some homemade things I grow and freeze helps like I grew and roasted some tomatoes and cherry tomatoes and froze them. Kale is super easy to grow and so is Swiss chard and lettuces. I try to grow my own herbs and dry some for the winter which works pretty well. Sage, dill, parsley, thyme, oregano, sometimes cilantro, and chives grow well here even in containers. Also in summer you can grow enough zucchini, summer squash, cucumbers, pumpkins, spaghetti squash and if you are able you can grow your own potatoes, beets and carrots. I have trouble with voles eating my underground veg. Also you can grow snow, snap and shelling peas and any number of beans from green beans to larger to colorful beans. It’s a lot of work but fun and satisfying when you are living off of what you grow more. Also all winter here there are always affordable apples, potatoes, onions and occasionally fresh broccoli, cauliflower and carrots are usually affordable. Oatmeal is another inexpensive thing compared to so many other breakfast items. It’s crazy tho how many places have marked up things like a simple bead of romaine ag the store (not the bagged but fresh head ). One thing I wish was cheaper is almond milk.

@@fragilefleur Good to hear your confirmation on the pricing game :). At TJ's I shop for a few specific items because of both quality and pricing - organic basmati rice, frozen veggies like broccoli, spinach etc, frozen berries (great deals), TJ brand pasta sauce, nut butters, healthy snack options (love em), yogurt etc. You can also find good deals in fresh veg section like their greens, cabbages etc. The fruit deals are pretty good or at least comparable. Their desserts section is superb (which I try to avoid :D). I wish I could give more details. I'm usually in and out fast, sticking to my list. I'm told their organic products are some of the best deals around. Because I'm single I don't shop at Costco., sometimes tagging along with a friend. Mostly I used to get their Wild Planet (best in taste) sardines and tuna, but I'm finding that between Amzn and Freddies I get good deals there. So, I've stopped that. I wish I could get into gardening! Wow, you have quite a list there!! It delights me to see people's produce gardens! I've just started a few Indian herbs after watching a RUclips video of a local. Crossing my fingers and toes :D

Very good tips Christine! What surprises me though are the people that find shopping in bulk the way you do and storing it all to be too much inventory. Ever since I was a child living in a Northern Ontario Town, my mother always had a lot in the cupboard because to feed a family of six on minimum wage, we ate a lot of Boston boiled dinner, fried bologna with eggs, pasta and sauce, and often had breakfast for dinner. My mother was good at managing things and once she bought a freezer to put sale items up for later, I do believe the food prices dropped. My sister, myself, and my oldest nephew all suffer from the disease of having to buy meat on sale even though a few of us are households of one person. I eat low carb so I don't buy a lot of vegetables but when I do buy some I also look for them to be on sale! It is a bit of a game for me to keep my food budget down but I couldn't tell you how much I spend in a month because I over shop and then eat for a while and then start looking for specials again because it's just me! Thanks for all that you do!
