Marionette Puppetry may be a rarity in theatre today. However, the ancient art form, even in today’s digital age, is still alive and well. Watch as members of theatre companies Here and The Marionette Theater at the Swedish Cottage reflect on the magic behind string puppetry performances. From construction and maintenance of the delicate characters to the interaction of the marionettes with an audience, these productions require true imagination and engagement from both sides of the stage. (Originally aired 1/14/2015)

As a ventriloquist with 40+ years of experience, I am in awe of both these representations of puppetry theater. I recently partnered with a friend to create a shadow puppet production and the moment of pure satisfaction, for me, was being behind the screen and not hearing a pin drop from nearly 200 elementary kids. Would love to learn more about marionette puppets. Keep it up, and thank you for the inspiration.

I’ve always wondered what the difference is between puppets and costumes.
For instance Big Bird is considered a puppet, with a man inside.
But how does that differ from a costume that a man is wearing?

Big Bird is sort of a hybrid of a puppet and a costume.

Too many injury reports? I hope that wasn't a jab at persons injured on the job... I'll let your youth be the excuse on this one but a lady doesn't make fun of those with disabilities.
