    Just a few clarifications , to my knowledge US is not testing the new gripen E variant. All the footage is from the old C variant , which they did test. The newer E version had to make a new airframe since all the new stuff couldnt fit in the smaller airframe of the C variant (new engine , fueltank , radar , interface etc) and it had its first flight in 2019 , all in all I would recomend stop saying they are the same.

    This is a 4.5 Generation fighter. So it's not stealth. BUT it does have something that it's extremely good at, probably better than any other fighter. It's the electronic warfare suite. It can be updated constantly and extremely powerful in information, scanning and working as a group of fighters etc. One of the first equipped with AESA radars, of course more common now.
    The software and electronics and the update capabilities is exceptional. So with right armament and BVR and AI/Electronics and data sharing it's deadly as hell.

    Grippen is good , but i as a european place my bet on the f35. EW and targetting pots are fused internaly take that into consideration grippen needs outside pods etc., also the little stealth can keep the f35 safe. also the cost of the f35 and the spare parts are more vast then the grippen. cost will go down production will speed up. and design is ready for new upgrades

    • @NATObait
      @NATObait 3 года назад

      F35 is a next generation aircraft that has stealthy shape. But F35 is expensive to maintain and it's flight per hour costs higher. The Gripen integration of weapons is easy and customer's not limited to expensive options.
      Both systems are different and have strengths and a mixed fleet is often the best way. You don't need expensive jets for bread and butter missions.
      One of the biggest considerations is Access Codes , US will not share.

      @@NATObait on the other hand an f35 comes out with internal EW and Targetting pods and due to the mass production its costs will go lower , and parts will become easyer to come by and thus also saves in the cost. and it is already going down the A variant is at 77 mil

      Yes. It's predecessor (J-35 Viggen) also had the same capability.
      The sweeden combat doctrine says that in the event of war (against USSR and now Russia) all of their bases would be destroyed in the fisrt hours of war.
      So they needed aircrafts that could be fueled and armed in a matter of minutes in hidden outposts by a small crew.

    The biggest strenght with Saab JAS39 is that like its predecessors it can land and takeoff from improvised runways like roads or even gravel/grass if it is even enough, and can be field-maintained by nothing but a tanker truck and a minivan with a trailer and less than a dozen mechanics, half of wich would be conscripted privates. The fact that it still can play in the game of F35 and F22 and can beat F14 and F16 is amazing, so it should be the plane of choise for smaller poorer nations. Still, several key components are dependent on the ok from USA and UK so it is not as if it could compeete with US made platforms on a fair market. The next generation Gripen will probably include a drone-version and then the game changes!

Well done Sweden , well done Saab . The JAS 39 should really sell well . It is a serious contender . Regards.

      The Gripen is already unstable in its original design. The design was deliberately made unstable in the sense that the aircraft Always wants to flip over, an on-board computer keeps the plane stable at all time using the front canards.
      It's this "instability" that makes it such a great fighter since you can "allow" the plane to "flip" at will, meaning it has an incredingle turnrate compared to almost all other modern fighters.

    • @lages001

      F-16, F18, F35, F22, Gripen, Eurofighter, Rafale. They are all unstable by design and their flight is only possible because of fly-by-wire and computers.

    With what other fighter jets are they comparable? F16? I would appreciate serious answers only

    • @TheStefanskoglund1

      Not really. Costs to begin with and trouble being used in Sweden.
      A Viggen JA (ie air defense variant) can if it is needed take off in an usable combat configuration somewhere around 400-500 m from a standstill. Which is where the Gripen also had to be.
      Not being able to do so ... say good bye to the basing philosphy which in itself would drive costs.
      A combat equipped AJ37 (two heavy A-to-Ship missiles and extra fuel) less than 600 m if you are prepared to use the AB and Gripen had to be able to match that performance at lower costs.
      AJ37 was partly designed around carrying two Rb04. That weight with laung rails is more than 1500 Kg and drag on that. Two Rb15 with launch rails ... what can it be 1300 Kg with the rails ? Add drag.

    • @lages001
      @lages001 3 года назад

      Yes. It's comparable to an F-16.
      But it's a little bit smaller since it carries less fuel and has a smaller engine.
      Newer versions of F-16 and Gripen are equiped with AESA radars, new engines, better cockpits, better avionics,etc.
      F-16 is comparable to Gripen with the difference that F-16 is a little bit bigger.
      F-18 is comparable to Rafale (since both of them are naval jets) and Eurofighter (even though it doesn't have a naval version)

  • @calags
    @calags 3 года назад

    I think that if the USAF is considering getting a Gen 4+ aircraft to supplement the F-35 it should take a close look at the Gripen E/F instead of spending development money on a hypothetical F-36 Kingsnake. It's a competent multirole fighter with an open computing architecture and has a modified GE 414 engine and is claimed to be able to supercruise with an A-A loadout. If we integrate an American AESA radar like the SABR or RACR the American content becomes substantial. I'm sure Boeing would have no objection to building them in St. Louis and they are already partnered with SAAB on the T-6 Red Hawk.
