Just recently got into creek fishing here in MS. I love it. Targeting bluegill and rock bass. I use a Lew's ultralight with a 4'6" zebco hotcast. I use 6lb braid because it casts so much better and i use a 4lb mono leader. All in all, a $30 set up but i cant put it down. It works so well.
I use a 7ft ultralight rod with 2lb fluorocarbon and only use a a hook and worm, just let it drift in the current. Theres a creek about that size near me that has tons of chubs and a few rainbow trout. Glad I'm not the only one that enjoys fishing for smaller species

I began using this rig in the California north coast steelhead rivers. I then sized it down for trout fishing, then smallmouth bass and gills. I especially like to use it with a big #4 bead head Wooly Bugger for trout in Wyoming and Montana :)
So I live in the dessert southwest. No creek chubs anywhere. But you make them look like so much fun to catch. One of these days I will travel up there, just for that purpose.
Great trout at the end there. I use honey worms for trout and panfish. They are a great bait. I also spike it with a small piece of Berkley crappie nibble to add more scent and color.

Darn right man! I prefer the float simply to avoid snagging - seems to help me keep the jig from digging under a tree branch too easilly. And the honey worms should be called money worms... Cause they are money.
Love the 1 inch Comal pear floats for jig n bobber rigged with a 32nd ounce and a 16th on the bottom makes it perfectly weighted so when a fish grabs your bait they barely notice any resistance. For longer range Ill use a bigger Cigar float with 2 16ths which seems to work better because its more streamline so you can cast em a mile.
The berkley honey worms are Fantastic!! I bought two jars last year and destroyed bluegill and trout on the one day. Durability is ok but I will say if you just thread it on the jighead and make the most use out of one before it’s torn up or falls off it’s dynamite. I love using them in the trout magnet spinners!
Dude I love Ultra Light fishing. I bought a St Croix Panfish series 7' light. Throwing 1/16oz - 1/8oz kills giant bass around Myrtle Beach for me. I my kiddo just caught a 5lb largemouth on 2lb test with a baby fluke jr.

@@FishAnything Fishing small bodies of water likes ponds or specific stretches of river where you know they are is always better in the winter than fishing big open waters as they tend to be more difficult. Smaller hooks on hair rigs with pack bait work pretty well in my part of the state. My biggest tip would be to bait the spot u plan on fishing for a few days prior or even a week or two before if possible. Fascinating content! I know a lot of fishermen go for THE BIGGEST FISH then can hook. But, what about the smallest? Like creek chubs, minnows and the like? In Japan there are fishermen who go after gobies and even smaller bitterlings. Smaller than your pinky or your fingernail, respectively. Bigger is not always better. Now I want to find cold weather creek around me and see what's there. Thank you for the content!
This late summer/early fall, I've had good luck with creek chubs using white wax worms. A bait shop owner told me about it. I put them on a 1/32 jig and pulled them a ton. Maybe it'll work for you.
With how many fish tried to eat your float, you may catch a few of them if you can rig up something like a “hopper to dropper” rig like fly fisherman use. I’ve caught many fish using this setup on my fly rod, you could probably rig up something similar if you could find a suitable floating lure like the Rebel Creekhopper or another light topwater.
I have caught some decent sized Fallfish (same genus, Semolitus) on bass gear that, if I had been fishing with Light or UL gear would have been a ton of fun. I can imagine how some of those creek chubs felt...might just have to do that come spring....

I have a nice creek in my back yard, depth is a consistent 3-4 foot. I slay the two species of chubs in the creek on a light Carolina rig with worm or corn. Heck they’ll hit dip bait and even hit their own kind cut into cut bait. Voracious feeders lol
Ive always used little pieces of white bread rolled tight in to a ball. And either a peg float or just a split shot and hang it in the water, like off a dock or bridge. Bluegills tear up the bread to.
Yeah, the tough part about creeks in Kansas is the fact that so many are hidden on private farmland. I had access to one or two back in the day. WOOF the fishing was insane.
I have never used honey worms for creek chub. It is funny because this is one of the few videos I have seen that almost targets them. Sometimes, I specifically go to small streams that I know only hold greenies and monster chub and I think it is quite fun. I don't really use expensive gear to fish for chubs because a Dock Demon or a Dock Runner will do the job and I fish areas with HEAVY cover. I frequently slip and fall while wading and fishing with nice stuff is not really an option because it would get destroyed. My question is how well do the honey worms hold up? I frequently use small tubes and Gulp minnows and the chubs are extremely aggressive. They will bite off all of the bait within one or two casts. I also frequently break hooks getting them out of their very tough mouths. Chubs also fight like crazy if you get a big one. I have caught them up to about 10 inches in tiny tiny creeks. Thanks Stephen! Totally makes sense to get the Dock Demon. I was thinking about picking one up for that same reason. And the Honey Worms hold up better than a Gulp Minnow for sure. I think you will be pleasantly surprised with how well they work! It has become one of my best budget baits for multispecies.
Last fall i was just messing around, flipped some rocks in the creek and found these water bugs. not sure what they were exactly but they looked alot like earwigs, the chubs went crazy for them

In my opinion humble fishing is the best fishing. I live in florida and every body here boasts about catching a record size fish. Im on the other side of the spectrum. If i catch many little dinks its alot more fun and simple. Plus my arm never feels like its ever going to fall off!
Have you tried the Triple Surgeon its an easier version of Loopknot like the one your tying, and extremely strong almost as strong as a Palomar when cinched correctly.
I got a question but first I wanna say thank you for your videos they have helped me a lot I just brought this reel on your video to pair it with the temple fork ultralight i got a feeling it’s going to be a great match but my question is I have a ugly stick 6’6 medium mod fast paired with a honor xt 2000 is that to much of a reel for it or would it work I had it paired with a stratus VI svi40 but felt way to heavy for it I wanna have my trout set up and bass set up so I wanna make sure I’m making the right choices but other then that thank you very much for your help
Question?? Those gloves are they light weight enough to wear year round? I use gorilla grip gloves I picked up from Home Depot as I like to protect my hands anytime of year but they don't have the tacky palms for grabbing fish.
Yeah these are not heavy by any means. Probably will be a bit warm in the summer but not bad. Could always dunk them in the water if you want to cool down a bit.
you know what you might like just as much is doing ultralight santee drift rigging, it's basically carolina-rig dragging a float'n'bait, here is the rig build sequence: 1/16-1/8oz egg/bullet sinker>klacker-bead>Swivel>12-18" leader>gum-drop floater>honey worm or bait of the day>profit! it's great for bigger/deeper creak pools and bay coves. protip: have your local bait shop or friendly fly tyer put some hair on some of the gum-drop floaters; if you work it right the gum-drop floaters can even catch fish without being tipped with bait.
@@FishAnything depends, eggs and dough can bury the hooks, but you can make it more _snag-less_ like I do by using hooks like Gamakatsu's tw hook (St#. 262105) no bigger than #10, you can more or less kinda t-rig worms and grubs with those hooks. #10-18 caddis fly hooks are your friends.
It kind of comes down to personal preference and what you will be throwing. If you really want a bunch of distance, go with the 7'6 but if the distance isn't a huge deal and the 7' is more comfortable to fish with, go that route. Hope this helps!
i have that reel in 4000 which is the largest size daiwa makes in that model. cost fifty bucks and its a little jewel. silky smooth . i use it in salt but it would be best suited for fresh water

I'm getting my first ultralight and light poles, I ordered a 4,6 ultralight ugly stick for raft fishing. What's the biggest fish I should be able to get with that pole? And also I'm looking for a 4,6 or close length but in medium light. Any ideas? I don't know much about fishing pole basics, but I have an idea of a set up. . . .
You’d be surprised how big of a fish an UL can haul in. It’s all about playing the fish right - I’ve caught carp and catfish on 2lb test. Just takes patience. Not sure I’ve ever seen many 4’6 rods in a ML power. You might have to go with a little longer rod.
I found an easier way to tie a loop knot. I will see if I can find a video or illustration of it. Caught 5 pound smallmouth on it with 4 and 6 pound line. Can even do it with cold hands!

I have a nice creek in my back yard, depth is a consistent 3-4 foot. I slay the two species of chubs in the creek on a light Carolina rig with worm or corn. Heck they’ll hit dip bait and even hit their own kind cut into cut bait. Voracious feeders lol

Ive always used little pieces of white bread rolled tight in to a ball. And either a peg float or just a split shot and hang it in the water, like off a dock or bridge. Bluegills tear up the bread to.

Yeah, the tough part about creeks in Kansas is the fact that so many are hidden on private farmland. I had access to one or two back in the day. WOOF the fishing was insane.
I have never used honey worms for creek chub. It is funny because this is one of the few videos I have seen that almost targets them. Sometimes, I specifically go to small streams that I know only hold greenies and monster chub and I think it is quite fun. I don't really use expensive gear to fish for chubs because a Dock Demon or a Dock Runner will do the job and I fish areas with HEAVY cover. I frequently slip and fall while wading and fishing with nice stuff is not really an option because it would get destroyed. My question is how well do the honey worms hold up? I frequently use small tubes and Gulp minnows and the chubs are extremely aggressive. They will bite off all of the bait within one or two casts. I also frequently break hooks getting them out of their very tough mouths. Chubs also fight like crazy if you get a big one. I have caught them up to about 10 inches in tiny tiny creeks. Thanks Stephen! Totally makes sense to get the Dock Demon. I was thinking about picking one up for that same reason. And the Honey Worms hold up better than a Gulp Minnow for sure. I think you will be pleasantly surprised with how well they work! It has become one of my best budget baits for multispecies.

When I fish for chubs, I use a piece a mealworm on a size 14 hook with a small splitshot and sorta just plop it into the water.
Sounds like a great way to catch a ton of fish!

Last fall i was just messing around, flipped some rocks in the creek and found these water bugs. not sure what they were exactly but they looked alot like earwigs, the chubs went crazy for them
Interesting! Creek Chubs definitely feed up heavy on aquatic insects. I should try flipping rocks here!

In my opinion humble fishing is the best fishing. I live in florida and every body here boasts about catching a record size fish. Im on the other side of the spectrum. If i catch many little dinks its alot more fun and simple. Plus my arm never feels like its ever going to fall off!

Have you tried the Triple Surgeon its an easier version of Loopknot like the one your tying, and extremely strong almost as strong as a Palomar when cinched correctly.

I got a question but first I wanna say thank you for your videos they have helped me a lot I just brought this reel on your video to pair it with the temple fork ultralight i got a feeling it’s going to be a great match but my question is I have a ugly stick 6’6 medium mod fast paired with a honor xt 2000 is that to much of a reel for it or would it work I had it paired with a stratus VI svi40 but felt way to heavy for it I wanna have my trout set up and bass set up so I wanna make sure I’m making the right choices but other then that thank you very much for your help

Question?? Those gloves are they light weight enough to wear year round? I use gorilla grip gloves I picked up from Home Depot as I like to protect my hands anytime of year but they don't have the tacky palms for grabbing fish.
Yeah these are not heavy by any means. Probably will be a bit warm in the summer but not bad. Could always dunk them in the water if you want to cool down a bit.
you know what you might like just as much is doing ultralight santee drift rigging, it's basically carolina-rig dragging a float'n'bait, here is the rig build sequence: 1/16-1/8oz egg/bullet sinker>klacker-bead>Swivel>12-18" leader>gum-drop floater>honey worm or bait of the day>profit! it's great for bigger/deeper creak pools and bay coves. protip: have your local bait shop or friendly fly tyer put some hair on some of the gum-drop floaters; if you work it right the gum-drop floaters can even catch fish without being tipped with bait.
That sounds neat! Does it ride through brush well? My streams have a ton of wood in them.
@@FishAnything depends, eggs and dough can bury the hooks, but you can make it more _snag-less_ like I do by using hooks like Gamakatsu's tw hook (St#. 262105) no bigger than #10, you can more or less kinda t-rig worms and grubs with those hooks. #10-18 caddis fly hooks are your friends.

For lake fishing would you recommend a 7' ultralight or a 7' 6" ultralight?
It kind of comes down to personal preference and what you will be throwing. If you really want a bunch of distance, go with the 7'6 but if the distance isn't a huge deal and the 7' is more comfortable to fish with, go that route. Hope this helps!
i have that reel in 4000 which is the largest size daiwa makes in that model. cost fifty bucks and its a little jewel. silky smooth . i use it in salt but it would be best suited for fresh water

I'm getting my first ultralight and light poles, I ordered a 4,6 ultralight ugly stick for raft fishing. What's the biggest fish I should be able to get with that pole? And also I'm looking for a 4,6 or close length but in medium light. Any ideas?

You’d be surprised how big of a fish an UL can haul in. It’s all about playing the fish right - I’ve caught carp and catfish on 2lb test. Just takes patience.
Not sure I’ve ever seen many 4’6 rods in a ML power. You might have to go with a little longer rod.

I usually just add my split shot evenly distributed between the float and the jig.
For ultralight fishing I like 1 piece rod, ( for sensitivity) and you’re using 4 piece rod, how’s the sensitivity?
Honestly it’s surprisingly good for a 4pc travel rod! Highly recommend this rod for versatility
I found an easier way to tie a loop knot. I will see if I can find a video or illustration of it. Caught 5 pound smallmouth on it with 4 and 6 pound line. Can even do it with cold hands!
