Amtrak Sunset Limited and Texas Eagle: Los Angeles to Dallas

  • Here is a video from my trip on Amtrak from LA to Dallas on the Sunset Limited and Texas Eagle! I was in the 2230 car, the very last car on the train on both segments. We left LA on time and arrived Dallas on time, but we were over an hour late multiple times during the journey. We were decoupled from the Sunset Limited and attached to the Texas Eagle in San Antonio in the early hours of the second morning. The Sunset Limited and Texas Eagle trains don't offer the best scenery but it was relaxing watching the desert, occasional mountains, and the Texas hill country pass by. They definitely have their own charm. I've ridden the Texas Eagle in coach twice, but this was my first time in a sleeper on the Eagle as well as my first time on the Sunset Limited. It was a very relaxing and enjoyable experience and I recommend it to anyone who enjoys train travel or anyone who wants to visit more places or see more of the country. It was my first time to Tucson, El Paso and many other places on the route. Thanks for watching!

    Good documentary.
    I made a journey in the mid 1990's, from Little Rock, AR to Phoenix, AZ round trip but coach class. The P40's were pulling the consists.
    That was a memorable experience.

    I just found this video and I love it! This is the first rail video that makes me actually feel that I am experiencing it in real time! That’s a real feat given the length of the trip.
    You give a real sense of the trip experience with the amazing scenery of this great continent that we live on but you also show the nitty gritty of rail travel with the often less than picturesque views that make up a lot of any rail experience. The voiceover of the conductors was charming. And we don’t need a detail by detail review of the roomette - there’s enough of that elsewhere. So thank you!
    I am now going to look for other videos you have made. Perhaps I would like to suggest that you reveal a bit more of your personality as I was wondering who is behind the camera…but that’s obviously your choice.

    Good job with just the right amount of text. You must've taken this trip in March. I've been riding the Sunset Ltd. to New Orleans since before Amtrak's takeover & it's always been an enjoyable ride crossing the desert. Before Hurricane Katrina, the Sunset went all the way to Orlando FL. You were lucky with your train leaving L.A. on time & arriving in Dallas 3 mins. early. The Sunset Ltd. has usually been notorious for being extremely (6-8 hrs.) late. Maybe they've made changes for the good. You were in the best car with a view of the rails from the rear end without private cars to obstruct your view & horn noise from the loco. Before Covid, the baggage car & the transitional sleeper would usually buffer horn noise from the head end for sleeper car passengers going as far as New Orleans. You're lucky you weren't in the 1st car at the head end. The horn sounding at every crossgrade at night will keep anybody awake. I'm not accustomed to seeing the lounge car as sparsely populated. You were lucky you went during the pandemic with social distancing & fewer people. You also had the luxury of not having to wear a mask by being in a roomette. Too bad you missed having meals cooked on board & eating in the diner which is the highlight of train travel for sleeper car travelers. I'm hoping they bring back this service. There's been talk about chopping up long distance service between points where there are "Amshacks." Travelers would need to detrain & catch buses between certain points. The car interiors could use a facelift. They're coming up on 30 years in service without many upgrades.

      Appreciate the feedback! Must’ve been really nice to ride the SP Sunset Limited. This was my 3rd Long Distance trip. I’ve taken the Zephyr twice from California to Denver. It was nice to have less crowd and be the last car kind of away from everything and look out the window at the rear. You could still here the horn
      clear at night but it wasn’t too loud.

      Wrong there is an observation car from LA to San Antonio and dinning car which Sunset Limited has which is connected to the Texas Eagle till San Antonio, than the train splits and the Observation car and dinning car go to New Orleans on the sunset limited.

    OOPs not I'm confused. No Sightseer Lounge on the Eagle? Is that for the entire trip? or just from San Antonio north?
    and if you were to do it again, would you got West to East, or East to W?

    • @Surfliner6905
      @Surfliner6905  3 года назад +2

      At the moment, there no sightseer lounge on the actual Texas Eagle which is San Antonio - Chicago. The train from LA to San Antonio is the Sunset Limited which does have a sightseer car on it.

      Amtrak is presently refurbishing their Superliner cars, not replacing them like the Amfleet Is on the east coast, part of Amtrak Joe's infrastructure spending. Since the Texas Eagle north of San Antonio and the Capitol Limited share five train sets, neither will have a Sightseeing Lounge for the next few years as all of the Sightseeing Lounges get refurbished. The other west coast trains run on six train sets besides the Sunset Limited, which runs on four train sets as it isn't a daily service, just three trains in each direction per week. To run the Sunset Limited with a daily service Amtrak would need six train sets. Amtrak has only so many train sets, and with derailments of the past, Amtrak doesn't have a lot of spares available. Keep in mind some of these Superliner cars are approaching fifty years in age. Considering their age, Amtrak has done a great job just keeping these cars running... Amtrak also desires to extend the Heartland Flyer to Newton, Kansas to have connections with the Southwest Chief from Fort Worth. To do so means a second train set for the Heartland Flyer, which will most likely consume the rest of the Superliner spare rolling stock... Pray Amtrak doesn't have too many Superliner cars derailing in the future...

      It would take more work to add that and remove that when Sunset Limited connects in San Antonio which does have an observation car and dinning car so only a small section no observation car or dinning car from Chicago to San Antonio, and then from there on to LA there is both.
