  • Is FOMO the WORST thing to happen to Craft Beer!?
No. But it did get you to click on this video. You probably wanted to know whether or not it really was the worst thing to happen to craft beer and if there was anything to do about it. That little bit of anxiety was FOMO, or fear of missing out. If FOMO really was that bad and evil, your brain sure wanted to know about it; and that’s kind of the point. FOMO has slowly but steadily entrenched itself in craft beer marketing over the past decade and maybe not for the better.

The good thing about homebrewing, you never have to miss out on a beer. Cause you can make it!

At the beginning of my craft beer journey in the late 2000s, I definitely had FOMO. Once I got into the hobby, I needed to try all the new releases ... and it was possible. Most bottle shops by me would get maybe a six pack -- or at most a 12 pack -- of new beers each week, so going there and grabbing a six pack or two would allow me to try everything new on the shelf for that week. It was easy to keep up and "be in the know."
Then a few years went by and the scene exploded. Tons of breweries opened -- including locally -- and it wasn't feasible to get every single beer I wanted to try, so I just started to pick and choose what I wanted to drink based on my palate and not whether or not the beer is "rare" or "hard to get." To be honest, more often than not, crazy hyped beers end up being over-hyped for me. Sure, some of them live up to their billing, but I find myself disappointed quite often.
Starting my channel in 2018 brought back some FOMO feelings, but I've pretty much reviewed beers I like to drink and what I'd drink even if I didn't review them on camera. I even decided last year to do more "shelfie" beer reviews so that everything I was reviewing wasn't only local or hard-to-get beers. Do I still drink hyped beers? You betcha. Do I care if I miss out on a release or specific beers? Not anymore. With so many beers -- and great ones at that -- I know that the next release is around the corner, so if I do miss out, I'll just get something else next time.
This was a great video, Ryan. I've had this conversation with a few friends and I think we all admitted that one point (or maybe more) we had FOMO, but finally realized that if you don't try that one beer, everything will be OK. There's more to come.
    Cheers, buddy!

I had Craft Beer FOMO when I first started reviewing Beers, but when I found out for me personally, that I cant afford to keep up with the craft beer scene, I gave up and excepted it, and moved on, and just cured myself of the disease, sometimes I have flash backs, but then I just shake it off, and move on to reviewing something else.I enjoyed this Interesting video and information Ryan, Cheers Buddy

FOMO is the worst thing ever for sure. I try not to get sucked in. But it’s inevitable

Gotta agree with you on that, as BrewTubers we often fin ourselves running around trying to find the hypest beers to review or to showcase on our channel. I've seen better views on hyped up breweries but again, I'll never go back to stand in a line to buy beers. Awful experience and wouldn't recommend that to anyone. There's so many "whale hunters" out there striving to find the most hyped up brews they can find and burn whole paychecks on ridiculous orders. It might makes me sound like a hater here but, hype haze is just over hyped.

Beer is meant to be enjoyed, and nothing is less enjoyable than a long line haha. Cheers! Thanks for the great insights.

I know a lot of new breweries in small towns that all they do is brew hazy beers (personally tired of them) and all other styles are horrible.
I say a brewery cannot release a hazy until they can release crystal clear flavorful beer.
You do that, then I will allow you to graduate to hazy and other experimental type beers.

As an industrial (job=market) and home (hobby=go crazy) brewer I do not collect beers like stamps. It is among brewers not "kulturny" to bring up your phone and Untappt during a taste session. Thats what consumers do. You just taste, get inspired, talk about different notes, but no fancy stuff like "A mix of a wet horse blanket and strawberries in morning dew". Just "nice beer, oh notes of green apples in a stout, hmm interesting". I do not try to taste every new beer at Systembolaget. Yes, I live in Sweden with gov monopoly selling alcohol with cap on to end consumer. All new beers sold on bottle or can in Sweden are sold in one store. You can order everything to your lokal Systembolaget. So if you have FOMO you can get it all where ever you live.

Thank you for the great industry-person take! Glad to hear that beer tasting is about getting inspired rather than just ticking boxes. Cheers!

oh man I thought FOMO was one of those beer products where you stick your bottle or growler into and make the beer taste like it just came out of keg. ..... wait thats a brilliant branding idea....be right back!

I don't chase or have fomo but I am curious. I once drove 4 hours just to try heady topper and Hill farmstead because of all the hype I heard.
