Wow! This brought back many memories of happy family trips, I was about 10 or 11 (1990/1) I remember going on this ride many times. :) thank you for compiling this.
I'm pretty sure I went to Chessington in 1988 (certainly 1989 - got the pics) so was lucky enough to go on this ride. I know we went there several times when I was little so I would have gone on it every year it was opened. I'm now nearly 31 and still consider it one of my favourite themepark rides and certainly one of the most imaginative! !
Been such a long time since I've heard that music. I recall having the tape many years back but alas no longer. Thanks for finding the music and the pictures.
OMG i well remember this ride first time at chessington. I brought the cassette of all the music...... going with my family tomrrow they love it there ps i will always remember the fisher price skates
Amazing, thats taking me back a while! I wish I could go back in time and experience all these things again. They dont last forever these rides, they have removed the yellow monorail which was the first ride at the Zoo back in those days. That monorail was probably the reason the zoo turned into a themepark.
I hadn't been born yet during the duration of this ride's opening, and soon closing, but I have to say, this gives me such nostalgia and I've never even ridden it! Also, I have to say that Zappomatic 552 is the absolute best robot out there- _Why did they have to shut it down?????_ *>:'0*
Aw I miss the 5th dimension! My 5yr old loves Tomb Blaster though and when I showed him this he said "Hm Mummy I think Tomb blaster is much better"...Kids eh!? Zappomatic You may be gone but You'll never be forgotten!!!
omg i remember my mother taking me on this ride when i was 5, and that was 1990. I missed this ride so much, sometimes i hear this music in my head, and i had no idea where it came from and i thought this ride was a dream, but its real im not mad lol :P i will sign your petition bring it back now! lol
I remember going on it with my dad (or rather forced on) i was very youn so i was scared but i was the best shot from bein scared near the end but half way i kinda liked it, oh and im 22 now so i was about 5-10
Oh my gosh! These pictures a fantastic help to understanding how wonderful the Fifth Dimension was to Chessington. I've been looking for media about old rides at Chessie, Thorpe and Alton for ages, so thank you very much for this insight! =D
this looks awesome, i remember it being there but my mum wouldnt take me on it cos i was to young i had to wait outside while she took my cousin, looks way better then tomb blaster (even though i love it) which i went on yesterday
This ride's always stuck in my head, prob in part as I too had the cassette!.. god-awful isn't it but was chuffed with it at the time. Beauty of a ride as an imaginative kid though, cheers for sharing!
Bob Goodman It wasnt god awful, it was way more detailed and animated than most rides today, but these pictures in the video are flash photos (not under the ride’s proper lighting) taken during its removal, so it looks crappy
Thanks very much- I would have been nine when they shut this thing down so it brings back fond memories of being aged less than double figures! Wasn't the monster called the gorgon?
I'm pretty sure I heard part of the exit music in a new KIA advert - its played on piano though, rather than synth. I think the guy who wrote this music is called Richard Heartly and it wouldn't surprise me if he made the music for the car ad aswell.
@SaiyanHajime it Starts off going through a room with screw driver, plugs tv etc, then you get shrunk through the tv and you meet zapomatic on his roket. then after meeting zapomatic the lights go out and there was some glowbugs. Then I remember going past some giant spiders overhead. Then after there was those spacemen or were they snowpeople. Then I can remember laser guns being fired at me and finally everyone met the gorg and the cards turned and you press fire button. it was well made.
I filmed this ride on my old vhs-c camcorder bout 1993...I would love to upload it on here...don't know how to transfer from video tape to youtube. I so much want to show you all.
Was it there for the 1994 season? That was the first time I visited. I don't remember the ride at all, but if it was there in 1994 for the whole season I may have ridden it. Looks very odd. Did it have a story?
well im 34 and believe i went on this ride in either 88 or 89. Was scared to go on it as had no idea what went on after you went throu black doors? found the snow people very disturbing in a good way. the rest of the ride hmmmm novel?
0:06 This Music Is So Funky. I've Loved Disco Dancing Fever. Thanks Mate. X
This was my favourite ride as a child. My parents had to take me on it so many times when we would visit...Loved Zappo :)

I wish I could experience The Fifth Dimension. It's such an unusual tale of how it was built, re-designed and then it disappeared forever...

Will never forget them fisher price roller skates!

So sad how times flies and how things change (for the worse) in this day and age. Simple pleasures and fun times 80s/early 90s
Aw I miss the 5th dimension! My 5yr old loves Tomb Blaster though and when I showed him this he said "Hm Mummy I think Tomb blaster is much better"...Kids eh!? Zappomatic You may be gone but You'll never be forgotten!!!
it was the smoke machines that made the "dry smell"

Matt0ldMan - I am so glad it is not just me who realised this!! Hahaha
Thanks very much
I wish i was born to ride this
Shame I never got to ride it...
I wonder what happened to Zappo now? Do Chessie still have him somewhere?

OMG IM GING THERE (CHESSINGTON) WITH SCHOOL 2MOZ! cant wait! me and my bff on all rides yh lol !
they need to bring it back
I can kinda see why they closed this ride now. I would be terrified as a kid to go on this.
I filmed this ride on my old vhs-c camcorder bout 1993...I would love to upload it on here...don't know how to transfer from video tape to youtube. I so much want to show you all.

No. The 5th Dimension had its final season of operation in 1993. Brand new for the 1994 season was Terror Tomb.
@deadite87
its the same here thats all i can remember about it!!!
and also being completly terrified!!!
WOAH WOAH WOAH.
This ride was *the* shit!!!!
well im 34 and believe i went on this ride in either 88 or 89. Was scared to go on it as had no idea what went on after you went throu black doors?
found the snow people very disturbing in a good way. the rest of the ride hmmmm novel?
'You wouldn't get rid of classics like the zoo or bubbleworks or the vampire...' bubbleworks ;(
Or dragon falls 😭
if this is chessington then its Tomb Blaster that replaced it
Isn't that second piece of music by Scott Joplin??
I think all the soundtracks were composed by Richard Hartley.
@@louiswright8282 yes they were
he would have done a remix version of it
@@reecehaines395 no I did some research and it's Scott Joplin's Weeping Willow Rag, only synthesized.
@@BenEmberley who are they
I don't remember this one, what year did it shut down?
+iPopcornicus s 1993
ben wilson ah ok that was the year I was born lol
Bubbleworks was the best thanks
This and now bubbleworks WHY!!!!!!!
they closed it down becuase it became unpopular
If anyone could give me a basic layout of the ride, along with some of the music from the ride, I could make a recreation of this ride using rct3
It's the exact same layout of Tomb Blaster. Your welcome ;)
