Getting to know my hometown of Cavan [Ireland]

- While I was living in Canada, my family moved to Cavan. A quiet north midland county in Ireland. As Ireland enters another week of lockdown, I decided to take advantage of a rare day of great weather to explore this town fully and to see if it is worth it for tourists to visit.
Honestly I quickly realized there wasn't that much to offer to tourists. Besides the large sport area's which are unfortunately closed. I can't drive and most facilities are closed due to lockdown, however I still managed to find some pretty nice sports around the town.

I am a brady. My grandmother was a Reilly . so what I concluded,my ancestors could
Have came from caven. I researched and found thay'ved been in the USA for 300years.
Liked this video showing what caven looks like. Thanks.
Aww glad you liked it!! I love hearing of people's heritage from different places. Makes one curious
Hopefully someday you can come visit xx
I’m also a Brady and my grandmother was Reilly and I live in Cavan. Strange
You should have no problem going down to Swellan lake, we always cut thru the fields to go fishing and the farmers would never stop us.
Ye I think Google maps was taking me a weird way. I know now that if you don't turn at the Terry Coyle park and go up to the Drumlins housing estate, there's access to the lake from there.
That's nice for tourists to see a fountain overgrown with grass only in cavan
Nicely done considering all the restrictions. I was born and reared in Cavan town over eighty years ago, I learn to swim in the Green Lake. Believe me it was a much larger expanse of water back then, and I remember a man who used to fish regularly from his rowing boat out in the middle of it. It completely froze over during the terrible winter we had in 1947 and we kids had slides on it. Swellan Lake, the bigger of the two lakes, was the'in spot' for swimming during the summer. There was two diving boards erected halfway along the lake and in the 1940s and 50s that area used to be packed with families having a swim and a picnic during the summer months. As young boy scouts we had a couple of Bell Tents erected on the opposite bank and we camped out there regularly during the summer. Carefree days but there you go. It's always nice to see shots of the old place again so thanks for your efforts....
Wow! I'm sure alot has changed since you were there x
I love hearing stories from people about their memories from places I've been or lived. Thank you so much for sharing xxx
Did you know three brothers named Ray,Thomas and Joe Greene?
@@TheGullyGreene i knew the greenes, they were neighbours. Mrs Greene used to let us kids in to watch their TV in the 60s. My older brothers were mates of thomas, raymond and joe. You would be pushed to meet a nicer family. They lived in 26 st phelims place, we were in the same row of houses.
@@martinclail9290 Ah that’s crazy mate, I’m named after Thomas as I was born on his birthday. Hence why my names “Tom Greene”. Ray still lives in St Phelams place and my Grandad Joe is still in Birmingham all these years later. As for Tom, we layed him to rest in 2019 after passing away from multiple illnesses. He was flew back to Cavan and had a lovely service in the cathedral where tons of his old friends gathered to say one last goodbye.
@@TheGullyGreenetell your grandad i was asking for him. Tell him Kenneth died a few years back in Coventry,he'll know who im talking about. Im in london, danny and Gerry are in somerset. As soon as you mention the Clails he'll know. I remember joe was a bloody good goalkeeper when we played in the college field nothing got past him. Your great Grandmother was walking up the road with me when i was about 10 and a 10 shilling note blew along the ground and she told me to pick it up and bring it up to me mum. I always make a point of seeing Ray when im home.

My dad was from ballyconnel as you see my surname is drumm I've lived all my life in England I've gone back to the name drumm over forty yrs ago after being called Collins married a useles Kerry man who should never have left Ireland

What I'd like to know: how did you get that bird to perch on your hand!? Nice video
We had some nuts with us while hiking. We noticed these birds were coming up very close to us and we held out our hands with food and they came.
Bare in mind this was in Canada and these birds (Whiskey Jack or Grey Jay's) and known for being friendly
You should take a run out to Ballyhaise it is only 5 min form Cavan town.

The stretch of road at the hard boiled egg is the most disgusting dilapidated area I have ever seen anywhere
Are you work as tourist guide for Ireland ?
No I just live here and like to show people what there is to see in Ireland

Beautiful Place , You gorgeous. as well

No Cavan not worth visiting.
I personally think Cavan has some good hidden gems outside of Cavan town.
Once restrictions lift I'll be out looking for them 😉
Its better than Peckham.
@@martinclail9290 Really with London on the door step considering most Irish come to the capital.
