Hey John, congrats! I'm currently working on a full review of this Gibson SG Std 61. Maybe you will be surprised, but stick to the Epi. If possible, get that PLEK'ed (in case you have issues). I tried so hard to justify but I'm returning this Gibson SG. :(
They almost sound identical. I like the pickups on Gibson better. They are punchier and fatter, but it feels a little bit better to play the Gibson because of how pickups respond. But after I got my Epi PLEKed, it could easily compete with the Gibson. I wouldn't say Gibson is more comfortable. Actually, the neck is very sticky possibly due to nitro finish. Hardware-wise, I would probably change the bridge on the Epi though.

Thank you. I just got my first SG about 6 months ago, an Epiphone sg modern, and I love it. Been looking for a standard 22 gret sg now.

They sound exactly the same to me, but can you FEEL the difference? I mean does the Gibson play more smooth or comfortable?

As an owner of a gibson sg 61 the only difference i hear is the $1400 more in the price tag
I agree, although I like the pickups on Gibson better. I can't justify the price tag as well. Returning this guitar :)
