    The NT is based on three rules, and the 27 books are the only ones who follow all four of these rules: 1. The book must be written by a prophet/apostle (those who were directly called by God, who were told directly His will. These are the only who are trustworthy for obvious reasons. God chosen) 2. They must not contradict other biblical teachings 3. They must be written within the lifetime of Jesus (all NT books are personal accounts) 4. (abstract) how reading them somehow changes your life

  • @SporeVenom

    therefore, your example, the Shepard of Hermas would only fulfill one of the requirements, the third. This is how we know we have the true books of God.

    I guess this is what has impressed me about the traditional saints of the early Church - many of whom were implicity (and sometimes explicitly) demonised in my SDA upbringing (books like the GC are prime examples of this). These men and women were martyred for their faith. And, certainly, without these leaders, Christian faith and doctrine would have been erroded by heresies like gnosticism. If these guys didn't represent the true Church, i'm not sure who did.

  • @brendos444
    @brendos444 12 лет назад

    Yes indeed. In fact one of the reasons the NT developed was to counter these gnostic writings. Another question for you is: if the early Church (particularly leaders like Athanasius) recognised the authentic apostolic writings, shouldnt we listen to how they interpret this Scripture? If they corrupted the faith, how is it that they could tell between false writings and true writings? The Bible didnt fall like manna out of heaven. It took centuries to come together withing the Church...

    Thanks for your response. A couple of things tho. Matthew, Mark and Luke were not apostles or prophets. They were close associates to the apostles tho. In fact, none of the Gospels names the author. We only know who wrote the 3 synoptic Gospels by tradition that was handed down. No book of the NT was written during the time of Jesus. The earliest biblical text comes about 30 years after He died and rose. These were Paul's letters.

    @brendos444 The Greek Septuagint, actually includes the apocraphal books. I'm not sure whether the Apostles quote from the Apocrapha in the NT, but clearly they used the Greek Septuagint when quoting the OT. The King James Bible includes the Apocrapha. I'm not sure myself whether the Apocrapha should be included, but the apostles were definitely using a version of the OT that included it.

    @brendos444 There is a further category of early Christian writings (not the apocrapha) that were considered scripture by some of the fathers, the Shepard of Hermas for example. Some of these books were considered part of the canon. In fact the Ethiopian Orthodox church includes some of these writings in their NT canon. Of course the Ethiopian church is neither Protestant nor Roman Catholic.

    @brendos444 I know what u r saying and it can be a hard one, but for me the SDA r by far from what I have seen the church that dose its best to teach according and live according to the Bible and Jesus. God Bless.

    Ok, yes i can agree that they were apostles but not disciples. Tradition has it that Luke and Mark were one of the 70 sent out by Christ. The Gospel accounts appear quite a while after Christ's death however - John is particularly late. But, the fact remains that the Church functioned without what we would identify as the NT for centuries. Some churches had some biblical texts, not all. The question for you is how did these churches function during the formative years without the NT canon

    @ganarzon Thanks for the response, but perhaps i can ask u the same question. What do u know about scripture? Do u know how it is we came up with the book called the bible? It was holy men who knew the teachings of the apostles, under the guidance of the spirit who decided which books were canonical and which werent. Do u know any of the early church fathers and their teachings? How is it that u can trust them to give u the Bible, but not what they say about it?

  • @brendos444
    @brendos444 12 лет назад

    @ganarzon Actually, the OT used by the apostles in writing the NT was the Greek Septuagent, which is a different text to the Hebrew text in the Dead Sea Scrolls. you're confusin the issue tho. I'm not questioning the manuscripts. I'm questioning whether you know how we got the NT. I'm comfortable with this process, but i don't know whether many SDAs wud be comfortable with the fact that it was compiled by the early Church Fathers whom SDAs think are not really reliable.

    @brendos444 Did you know that the Bible as we know it today was only finalized in the 4th century? St Athanasius was the first to publish the definitive list of canonical NT books. The book of Revelation was highly disputed in the early church because ppl had a propensity to misuse the message of the book and sensationalize it. Not much has changed today. It was finally included because it is of Apostolic origen. But it was highly misunderstood then and now.

    wrote the New Testament lived during Jesus' time, so they have first hand accounts. Whether they were written before or after Jesus death (although none were written before), the point is that they must be first hand witnesses of Christ, to have seen and known Him personally. All other claimed "gospels" (there are a total of only 11) are written much after Christ, and many written by sects such as the Gnostics. The gospel of Judas for example. Josephus even attests to this fact.

    @brendos444 How can we know for sure whose interpretation of scripture is right? How can u know for sure that EGW's interpretation is correct? What about all the other Christians throughout the ages, didn't they have the spirit as well? The Reformers who developed sola scriptura mostly disagree about what scripture really teaches. Calvin and Luther disagree. Both would have never endorsed EGW and her teachings. So how can we tell who is right?

    your questions concerning the fake from true Bible books, its clear that the SCRIPTURES used in the time of Christ and the apostles are the same books that was found as the dead sea scrolls which in our time is called the OLD TESTAMENTS. and the rest of the new testaments are from the apostles. the 20 apocryphal books are the ones not meant to be in the Bible, only the catholic church accepts.

    @brendos444 It's clear from history and implied by the St Paul in 1 Corinthians that the Lord's supper was celebrated every time Christians met together. Why is it that some Protestant Christians don't celebrate the Eucharist every week? I don't know. I'm searching myself, but I dont really find it compelling that a women in the 19th century was given all the secrets whilst Christians throughout the ages were wandering around blindly. What does this say about God and his church?

    Matthew Mark and Luke were in fact Apostles, in fact Matthew was on of the original 12 disciples. Now the others were not disciples, but they were in fact apostles. If you like I can make further argument for the agreement that they were in fact apostles. Although it is not states explicitly, most notable theologians and even historians agree unanimously who wrote each gospel according to the way they wrote them, etc. Also by the lifetime of Jesus I do not mean by His death, but rather those who

    i already spoke the key solution to know the word of God. if you cant find its because you havent asked the God of creation for such inspiration. before you open the Bible to read and study ask the Holy spirit for enlightenment. no one, i say no one in this world can give you what you need except God. heavenly things are given by heaven alone. if you need such wisdom ask God for it.

    But the early church fathers were the ones who decided upon which books were authentic apostolic teachings. Some of the early church fathers were direct students of the apostles e.g. Polycarp of Smyrna, Clement of Rome Shouldn't we pay attention to what these men say the apostles taught them. Remember that the NT was not decided upon until the 4th century. What did the early Christians use when the NT was still being written? They had wat was taught to them by the apostles.

    David says read scripture AND the "spirit of prophecy" ie Ellen White. Sola Scriptura? I think not. Adventists approach scripture through there own tradition. Just as all other Christians approach scripture through their own traditions. The question is which tradition is right? And how was it that the New Testament was decided upon? Through the early ecumenical councils of the Church. So the church gave us scripture. And Jesus gave us the church. scripture is part of the tradition of the church

    The God of this book is spirit. unless you have His spirit you wont know and understand. discernment is from God. the book is only a tool in order to hear what God has provided you. the spirit of prophecy is the last day inspired words given for our generation which is penned under inspiration. but the belief you establish itself still lies in the Bible truth alone! if any message goes against the Bible truth then its not from God. thats why we say SOLA SCRIPTURA.

    makes me think... what do you know about scripture, the thin paper with letters printed 2000 years ago? the Spirit has given His words to men and they penned it under inspiration. Using the word tradition just to twist the word truth connected with tradition is deceiving. its the spirit of God thats doing the conversion and the preaching, if you listen and follow His word you will know what the SCRIPTURE or SOLA SCRIPTURA means. dont have to explain what it is!
