Nitin Gadkari has written to Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman stating that the Goods and Services Tax (GST) imposed on life and health insurance premiums is a hindrance to the growth of the industry. This is not the first time that calls have been made to remove this GST.

2. Life Insurance which have significant element of saving and are in nature of financial service should be Input Taxed.

This open letter bullshit is a West influenced move. Gadkari should be aware that uncertainty and risk in fast transforming economy like India, in the middle of a regional war, with serious disruptions due to climate change anticipated in future .. are quite high and need to be adequately hedged against.
If Gadkari is listening to insurers lobby, HE SHOULD NOT. That lobby's grand plan was to slow india down and make a neat, assured profit on all the premium payments, which is basically what the old model did.
But average speeds are increasing, and accident rates are increasing, so all those old calculations are outdated. And this is happening at national level. The industry is getting anxious. They see their golden goose dying, literally.
The problem lies with the CEOs of such industries. They send their kids abroad, where highways have state of the art tracking devices to counter overspeeding, highway patrols to deter risky driving, round the clock ambulances etc which ensures their kids stay safe. But in their home country, they look at road infrastructure as a cash cow. They want to privatize every single aspect of such operations. They also want the govt to pick up the tab for their inefficiency.
Instead of ionteracting with lawmakers, infra companies, cops etc to devise ways of reducing risk and improving surveillance on our highways, these insurance companies are quite happy earning their incomes passively, and passing on all the risk to govt. But the govt cannot do that for free. So, insurance companies will have to be more efficient and proactive moving forward.
But most importantly, they will need to be empathetic to the needs of their customer. CEOs whose only job is to milk the market so that he can get that fat raise which sends his 3 children to study in the best universities abroad .. such CEOs will have to quit. Their era is well and truly over.
