I love your videos. Its so refreshing. Thanks! I live in the Orlando Florida area, and we have had all day thunderstorms since Mother's Day. Not really a good season for breeding. The birds have been nervous with the strong winds and down pours. I hope your season is much more productive.
Thanks, Yeah that sounds like indoor weather for the birds if your trying to breed them now. I breed mine in the winter time nov-feb, indoors because it is very cold outside and the birds would likely die if left outdoors.
Could you tell us which seed mix you use in each season and the proportions of seeds? Would be great man. Keep up with the amazing videos, i want to see those chicks coloring uop!
Hey Chris, I have been usually giving vitamins, garlic and vinegar separately mixed in water once a week every week to my birds/Gouldians. My Gouldians hatched their eggs on Nov first. I stopped giving the above mentioned to them. Can I continue feeding them the above mentioned or are these harmful for the two days old chicks. Please advise. Thanks
The birds make their own nests. Although some gouldians can be poor nest builders so you might need to help them out if their nest isn't built very well.
It could be that they aren't fully in breeding condition or the pairs aren't liking each other. It may help to separate the pairs for a while and then pair them up again.
Question ... I heard that when the gouldian chicks hatch you should remove the egg protein from the societies ... Is this true? Do you keep feeding the parents the egg protein while their feeding the chicks?
I have always given my birds eggs while they were feeding their babies because it is good for the chicks. The egg is good for the parents as well as it provides necessary proteins and nutrients for them. Egg in the long run if given every day is not good for the birds as it can cause health problems. So after the breeding season I usually give them egg food less.
You can try but gouldians would probably toss their babies or not incubate properly becasue of the noisy environment and it would make them stressed. Maybe a zebra or society finch would breed for you.
@@tonysprimitiveanimals8445 Yeah that is a good temp for the birds to breed at. if the temps get over 95 during the day it seems to stress the parents and the babies out and I don't have as good of luck
Most vegetables are good for the birds and they will eat them. I mostly give romaine lettuce, Carrots, Broccoli, some peppers, some squash on occasion.
Hi Chris, i know you are in the US, so im hoping i can get my birds on a schedule similar to yours. When do you start pairing your birds for breeding? When do you seperate? I usually start seperating late february early march because some pairs tend to lay late and so it tends to drag out. Im no breeder i started because my mom bought 2 and boom a week later eggs, and well they have multiplied quite quickly. But first and foremost i want to make sure i am giving them enough recovery time in between. Thanks 😉
Sounds like you are on about the same schedule as mine. I try to have my Gouldians separated by February or at the latest by end of March. Just like you said I do have some pairs that are late or they had a few complications during breeding season so they get pushed back a little during the season. Once the pairs are separated I put them in same sex flights for the summer to molt out and get exercise, and to enjoy the warm sun. By about October is when I put them back together to breed so they get around 7-9 months break which is a good amount of time for them to recover and be healthy enough to breed again.
birdnerd Awesome i was fearing that i was doing it wrong. I already removed the pairs that just werent working out and put them in same sex flights, since it was almost February i didnt want to run the risk of them breeding and dragging it out anymore. Of course i would love your setting indoors but its still a work in progress. Right now i have my gouldians outdoors and im in florida so i cover them to protect on weather conditions while i work on my indoor settings. Do you have videos on how you built your cages? My birds have multiplied so im trying to work on a solution that can work to accomodate them all and then some.... As always thank you so much for all your advice, i appreciate it!
Sounds like you are doing all of the right things for your finches. I would love to live in Florida, some day I'll get the chance to live there or even visit. I don't have any videos on how I build them but I can make a video and do a brief run through of what my set up looks like and what I did to build my bird shed.
Last year I had new pairs with white breast. The problem is that make 5 clutches but only the last two hatched. At first 5 birds from 5 hatched. Then only one from 5 eggs hatched. The 5 birds died after 4 to 5 days. The last bird survived for 14 days and died too and it looked as if it was only juts 5 day. I think that breading two white breast is no good as they are not healthy. this last case i never see that situation in the past i breed normal canaries i never meet a case of a 14 days chick looking like 4-5 days. I forget i have another pair of red face with violet and white breast. At last i have 3 healthy chicks and i was so happy and looking forward. :) do you think that mixing two white breast is wrong, does it have amy effect?
Many breeders have said that breeding 2 white breasted finches together is not recommended because chicks are weak and unhealthy. Maybe try and pair them up to purple breasted mates the next breeding season and see if their chicks are healthier.

I put small pieces of garlic in their water once a week as well as vinegar mixed in water. It keeps them healthy and mite free.
I love your channel really good info and tips. 👍keep it up
Thank you

I just added a video about the seed that I use. Take a look at that and if you have more questions let me know and I can help you

To be honest I have never given garlic or vinegar to the birds and am surprised that they eat it. I am not sure if it would harm the chicks or not.
hi. do u have to make their nest or they do it them self
The birds make their own nests. Although some gouldians can be poor nest builders so you might need to help them out if their nest isn't built very well.
Hi chris, have you tried to breed european big size gouldian finch??
No I haven't, I would to get my hands on a pair though
