      @@maiy8786 Stud? the stock are bolts which tend to walk out near the rear of the block. Not only does a bolt add more twisting resistance and lies more about the actual torque your applying but also won't go as far into the block where's you can drive a stud all the way down.

    7MGTE is a good engine, the head gasket and the oil pump are the only things who can be a problem...on mine (1992,manual,320000 kms!) the exhaust manifold had leaks I had to change the screws and the CT26 was leaking (cracked on the waste gate valve.).
    I changed the head gasket for a trimetal cometic one when I bought the car and no more problems! :) from France!

    The 7M-GTE is another great underrated engine next to the 1G-GTE. It just had a small defect from the factory and once it's fixed becomes a power house. I hope to see a video on the 1G too some day, I drive a 1G Supra out here in Japan and it's a blast.

    The 7m wasn't the only turbo M series, the m-teu was also turbo from the factory.
    The 2 main reasons for the head gasket failing was the lower than required torque for the the head bolts (this came about because Toyota changed from an asbestos head gasket at the last moment, but didn't check to see if the torque was sufficient for the new gasket)
    And a lesser known fact, the heads are very soft, and they deform around the head bolts, which allows movement (tiny though it may be, every micron counts)

      +TunerBattle Ahh wonderful to know. In that case, I have one more question. People say the suspension geometry is very strangely designed, so that when the suspension has no load on it, the wheels go into negative camber instead of positive. I assume you've driven one, in which case, how's the handling?

    • @JJ-df4kx
      @JJ-df4kx 7 лет назад +2

      I think they're really rock solid on the road. Especially with upgraded shock/springs. Suspension is one of the strong points of the car. You have double wishbones up frond and Multi link in the back. Never heard that story about thenegatieve camber. But the car is Always under load? And ofcourse you have negatieve camber with double wishbones if you pull the thing up. But the switch between negative/positive camber when you have body roll is the magic of double wishbones.

  • @WKZworks
    @WKZworks 7 лет назад +2

    How to make it reliable? Simple: Torque down the head properly. If you do end up blowing the head gasket, be sure to replace the piston rings as well (may as well pull the motor and engine stand it to d this job) as Japanese and Korean cars use high-tension rings that do not hold up well to overheating. If you fail to do this, you will not have the compression you used to upon having the motor running again, and as such will not have the power you once did.
    You can get 1000HP out of a 7M-GTE, it's been done before. You do need to know what you're doing, though.

    It has been discovered not too long ago the 7MGTE with R154 can do 1,036HP-1,300HP to the wheels safely without stressing it. Of course you may want to upgrade the tranny and rear diff after 1K HP or 1100HP. Obviously that's Fully Supped UP. Not bad for 80's Technology. This is STILL being reliable daily driver too.

    some other tips to make the oiling system more reliable is to rip the original oilcooler system of an replace it with a real thermostat and a big cooler and relocate the filter and replace it with a bigger one for more oil volume. and change the oilsqurters for new ones as they tend to leak pressure when they get old. happy wrenching!

      Alex Ortiz as far as easy upgrades they sell k&n filter, silicone intake tube, and there is also a Injector upgrade you can get that gets better throttle response and quicker starts which are mostly the motor's biggest short coming other than power. There are also a couple chips for 96-97 but not for 95 as it has a slightly different ecu and I am not sure if it would work with it. They also sell mid length and long tube headers. Doing more than that and it becomes cheaper to do an engine swap.

    how to make any turbo engine reliable is put a secondary boost controller on it ie hks run the turbo off a seperate oiling system all together using a seperate oil tank. since engine oil is scavenged when the turbine supercharger hits high temperature into its active boost range. also do not use turbos with a internal wastegate external wastegates with a egr dump is preferred. also with a seperate electric oiling system and tank the turbo will not need a a turbo timer etc etc. also by utilizing a seperate oiling system which was developed by porsche with the 911 inaccordance with bosch saves valves vavle seals and the entire upper engine components. try that for reliability. remember the turbo acts as its own seperate oil drive when active lowering the oil in the oil pan on the crankshaft and the bearings. it also superheats oil when it returns. most turbos also require a seperate oil weight and viscosity to its bearing journal size and operating temperature then the engine. the engine is usually matched to the bearing journal and clearances and operating temperature. mobile ones engineering white pages can explain this.

    My first car was a 1987 Toyota MK-III supra with the 7mgte, it was not very fun because of the head gasket kept going out. so you have to machine the head or you won't get a good seal, and ARP head studs are a MOST with the 7m, also there are NO aftermarket parts for this car. oh yea if your car blows up and your gonna scrap it, keep the 154r transmission and keep the engine harness and electronic. its worth something.......the igniter is $700 used.

    Its been 10 years since my MK3 died and I had to sell it. The scars have not healed, and I think the only solution is to get a new one. Too bad they are 4x the price now compared to 15 years ago.

    My biggest issue with the 7M, personally is the super SOFT allow head. If someone re-made the head, and did the other recommendations I would still have my 7m.

    It could use an oil pan baffle or a longer oil pump pickup. Mine got rod knock at a drift event and it was completely full.

    Great video Visio. Your english sound more refined every video, but there is one pronunciation of yours that needs some work - development is pronounced de-VE-lop-ment not de-ve-LOP-ment. Just my two cents, cheers ;)

    I can only get the 7m because the 1jz only comes in rhd mk3 Supra’s and I want lhd. And mk4’s have the 2jz in left hand drive but all mk4’s are expensive so yeah 7m is my only option.

    It was not just the Head bolts that screwed the 7M-GTE Head gaskets.
    #1 Toyota used SHIT aluminum for the head. So when the it was torqued down at the factory it would crush the Aluminum at the head bolt lands. Also like in the video Torque specs were wrong. But do NOT torque them to 75ftlbs! 100Ftlbs MINIMUM!
    #2 The Oil pump is a High volume/Low pressure pump. Replace it with a high pressure/low Volume after market mechanical pump OR a dry sump setup.
