- Organic reach IS BACK! In this video I take you through how I got a brand new artist nearly 1M views and 10K followers in 7 days on TikTok, with zero money spent on ads. The content was made with just their music, no trends and no gimmicks. And yes, it boosted Spotify numbers substantially too (and helped get on playlists). In this video I take you through the strategy which you can implement today for your music and releases. Although this did go viral, this video is about better content and better strategy long term, rather than the quick wins. This is about getting your music heard and building a fanbase.
Regardless of whether you're starting your music career from zero, or if you're established, this video will help you create content for your music that lands, gains views and Spotify streams. This can work for both your current music release and previous singles.
⚡ As mentioned in the video, I'm running a special offer for this video only - you can get 20% off my Academy (either Monthly or Pro), with code MILLION. Head to dk-mba.com to get started with The Roadmap To 1 Million Streams today.

👇 ABOUT ME:
Hey! I’m Damian Keyes and I've worked with musicians every day of my life for the past 20 years. The internet is de ply untrusting understandably and here is my background so you can have the full picture.
When I was 18, I was signed to a major label and at 23 I co-founded a Music University in Europe called BIMM (valued at $300M). I’m also a bass player, I’ve played for a number of artists including Eric Clapton, Alanis Morrisette and Billy Cobham. I initially retired at 30, but realised that life gets boring if you’re not building!
I have always been in-between the music industry and education which is how I ended up building my RUclips channel - I’ve been teaching artists how to release music long before it was a ‘niche’! I now educate artists around the world with my Academy, RUclips channel and Social Agency.
It’s great to meet you and looking forward to working together on your music!
What if you don't have a team behind you? If I'm doing content it will be alone. Any tips on how I can make it easier doing these marketing strategies without a camera man etc?
Good question,
To start you need to decide on your priorities and your calendar so you can be organised with your time. My suggestion is you make 1-2 hours a week for content creation (filming). If you can't find a friend to film you on a phone then buy a cheap phone tripod (Around $15 on amazon) or failing that use a wall. Practice getting a well framed shot ideally at the right time of the day (golden hour). Batch your content, which means film a chorus (like a music video) as many times as possible within the hour.
Think about 5-10 ideas on what context you can add to the video, sometimes spoken before the video or sometimes on the screen as text. Think about comfortable places you can film inc in a car, on the street, somewhere where the natural light is good.
Lastly I want you to spend an 30 mins to 1 hour a day (whenever you have free time) for 2 weeks watching some youtube videos about colour grading so you can make the colours pop and help stop people scrolling.
I know it seems like I have a team however a friend/family member with an iphone would be enough, I'm in no way a professional videographer. Failing that improvise using whatever you have to hand.
Let me think about a video I can make this week on this subject, I will put it on IG/TT so go follow me there and I can use this question to answer.

@@DamianKeyes Okay great! I've been watching you for sometime now you give good points! I'll just have to get a tripod and record myself! It's hard I've done it before but I'll make it work thank you for responding!

Any advice for when tiktok flags your video for copyright infringement? When you're using your own song?
Same here- that’s the issue I’ve come into when making a video out of the app and uploading it to TikTok
As well for cover songs. Unless you have a sync license-which is a chunk of change- copyright will flag you.
Did you use any samples?
@@hamzz6824 I don't know what samples are. I use my piano solo recordings and most times I record myself live on camera.
I have a RUclips video explaining the hack
Youl should 10000% put (for free) in the title
Changed, good shout!
@@DamianKeyes Yeah but is it free ?...I mean I imagine there is some decent money gone into that song production, you did it for your pal, everyone might not have that skill or friend, would you do it for any subscriber for free ?,,Im not having a dig, the channel is great, but you got to be realistic
@@Newmusicreview there’s always gonna be reasons why we can’t, it’s your job to put in reasons why you can. This video isn’t actually about free/not free because everything in life costs money. Technically, there was no ad spend and he didn’t pay us to do it. Jordan hasn’t been my friend for life, he was our first friend we met when we moved to Nashville (me and my wife) and he put himself in that position, like he has constantly to get to the place he is so far.
I’d take that from the video, hope that helps 😊
It’s a simple strategy that you can try, totally up to you whether you want to do it or not
@@DamianKeyes hey bud….like I said, I think you offer some great advice…and I am continually surprised how many folks have a good song but fail to promote it properly if at all….keep up the good work 😬
Three words...Joshua, David, Johnson! For the opposite of what Damien said to do. Could of been a contender...
Hi Damian, I find so much value in all of your content, and it has helped me a lot with my music. I'm releasing an extremely niche 9-minute prog rock single soon and I'm really confused about what kind of content will work to push it out, and how exactly I should be marketing it.
Can you please give me some tips on this?
Thank you!♥
So doing this, awesome vid man 🔥🔥
thank you Damian, honestly you helped so much
I can not believe that you only have 20k vies for this!!! Such a great vid. Thanks so much for the tips and advice!!!!
Thank you! As an up and coming music artist, I think making videos showing my face could really help boost my views!
I definitely see this strategy for charismatic live performers where as I'm just a introvert on a computer making some instrumental tracks. I think I need to join your academy to find out how to promote my music best.

Hi Damian! I have a few questions about hashtags. A. How important are they when I release content? B. How many hashtags should I use? C. Should I lean more towards competitive or non-competitive hashtags? Thank you!
I think most people problem will be quality of their songs...the soundbites I heard here are Pro quality, Hard hitting country Pop, a massive market, ....I hear hundreds of new songs every week and honestly most are not great either in songwriting or sound quality, if you have radio ready materials its all good, but if you are a solo artist doing ballads....well...thats gonna be hard work
I guess the assumption is that you already have something radio ready. The theme of this video is marketing, after all. But sometimes it's not even the quality. Not all music has that same ability to be viral. E.g., an average drone enjoyer as myself could not get much use out of this lol
@@wandregisel6385 agreed…
@DamianKeyes. Yeah right...2 subs ;-)
Agree internet including RUclips is rifle with mediocre musicians/rappers/wannabe producers.
But if you're good looking and you put your face on it anything will go viral.
People try so hard to sell their music that's mediocre instead of investing time getting better (and saving money by not releasing the edits and drafts)
Amazing! Great to see a video like this, it's like 1,000 of your videos put into one. I'll be referring to this a lot....
Ahh that’s awesome to hear. Cheers Rob
What if your song is about the digital addiction of giving every part of yourself to get the attention of others, and how you cant be truly yourself because the mystery is gone. And the masses move on to a new thing.
Social media is all about stories 💪💪
Dazzle me with your nonsense
Thank you so much for this you’re a real great person for sharing this sir. ❤👍🏽❤️
You can still market that through social media. In fact, it’s the perfect place to market it to. Your message will only be seen if you market it successfully, which is why you must do that so people can see your creation come to life.
So good man

Your BEST video yet 👏
Thank you 😊😊😊
Just used some of the advices on my latest RUclips short and it gave me 5 followers in the first hour of being online... this seems to work :D
Hi Damian,
I'm an electronic artist and I write mostly instrumental music, so no vocals. Do you have any ideas or tips that I could use to create content like this for instrumental music? Appreciate your videos!
Up
Shoot scenery videos, of landscapes, clips of the city, architecture, etc and put your music over it. Good for short content form like TikTok or yt shorts. A shot of the ocean and beach is one good one. A shot of people watching is some quaint little coffee shop outdoors - you know the picturesque parts of Europe. Little gifs of things that are "memable"/relatable a la Tumblr - just imagine what tublr is in picture and gif format with the mood boards and turn that into a video format with your audio over it.
If your instrumentals are more energetic and upbeat try vids of festivals and people jamming to a concert or at a club, clips at a fair idk just more upbeat stuff.
Another thing if you look how shorts and tiktoks are made is what you see people conveying information through text and background music is added. If you can have someone hop on your song and use it as a background (by multiple people) you'll be all set. You can try advertising your music as royalty free bc RUclipsrs are always in need of background music. If it's free or cheap contact youtubers personally and ask them if they'd like to use your music. Not sure if this is the kind of ideas you meant. Lmk how it goes for you
Hi Chris, same here. If you figure out the formula let me know, but I'll subscribe to you.
I have 10k followers and somehow make less than $.10 a month... And our videos are decent, but the algorithm doesn't pick us up.

Is there any hope for musicians that despise social media? I’m old and suck at it, I find people fake, I find all the social media apps to be invasive of privacy with their tracking etc… I don’t know what I expect but I just can’t bring myself to wh+re myself out regularly on social media. It makes me feel gross.

Great results! On point as always!
Thank you! 🙏
damien this was SUCH a helpful video , thank you! would you recommend chopping up a full length video that got nowhere and re-using it as clips ?
Yes but it’s more purposeful to shoot for the platform - sometimes clips from music videos feel too promo-y
@@DamianKeyes totally makes sense!!! thanks for replying :)
Awesome video. Thanks!
Appreciate you bro!
Heyyy… Nashville stand up! 🤘🤘
thanks a lot for the great information!❤
Hey Damian! What sort of content do you suggest artist posts before they have any music officially released?
Thanks for your video!
Hi Damian, I have a question about adding in the original song on cover videos? Are you adding this in a third party software ahead of time, or are you adding in TikTok/ IG? Also, would you recommend adding songs with a similar vibe under originals too? Thanks!
I find it remarkable how Damian never mentioned "TikTok" until around 11 minutes into this 12.5 minute video, and did so only once (unless I missed more). TikTok isn't even in the video's title, even though these numbers are clearly more representative of that platform than the others. This must have been by design.
Hey! It’s in the description, the logo is on the download from when I show the clip that got the highest views and the screenshots come from TikTok. Deffo not by design, just one of those things :)
I have started making songs but i am finding it extremely difficult getting traction . I dont know what to do.

I have a question for you, that always comes to my mind, when I see your videos:
Does your method work with EVERY type of music?
Because, your client here makes very radiofriendly stuff, which I don't mean judgemental, but it seems helpful to me.
What about unconventional stuff like e.g. noise? Would that work as well?
I can’t see why not? The only thing is, if what you’re doing is a very niche thing not many people are going to be into it (presumably) so you can’t be expecting millions of views (unless the video is really engaging and shocking) but I can’t see why your music can’t be pushed for an audience that likes that sort of things. But we have to manage our expectations sometimes if what we do isn’t very commercial (which is completely fine) but it might not appeal to the masses like in this video
What do you do when you don’t have any lyrics in your songs? I’m a techno dj and producer and my music has no or very little text in it and i have no bookings on my calendar. Should I then just walk around or stand behind the decks in my home studio? How can I translate these tips for a singer songwriter to a dj?
My wife’s cousin is a drum and bass producer, his content features more around the creation and making content regarding that. You can also do things like “transitioning into two songs that should never be put together” and do some fun stuff that makes people want to watch. Make it about someone else instead of you and that is the key. Last year during the Euros he did a piece of content that was “made a drum and bass banger from Jack Grealish” - the England footballer. He took something he said and turned it into a track and made content from it, which went viral at the time.
You just have to think outside the box and then use the audience who come in from that to listen to you 😊
@@DamianKeyes marvellous, thanks Damo! Gonna check out the competition and see what they do 👌🏻😁
THE ARTIST IS TIGHT AND HELLA TALENTED, HE DEAERVES IT FORSURE FORSURE!!! And more

Damian this video is inspiring and helps you get in a pro active mindset. Thankyou. After spending time on making videos like this. Reels let’s me use them but tik tok mutes the sound because of content id/ copyright. Have you come across this yet? How do you bypass it please?
Thanks for your work!
Firstly, great video! question though, at around 8 mins and 37 it says add In the song if it's a cover. How do you add in the original if you've already added your own to the video?

I manage my son and wish I had someone like you to help me get him going… I lack the marketing skills but he’s an amazing rapper and I’m not just saying it bc I’m his mom. Nle told him his music is hard and he has a big feature coming out in three weeks
Thanks for all this great content!! Question? Is there any way to use this formula for free while doing location target based marketing
This is really great and helpful, what was the marketing plan behind this
Hi Damian! Quick question here... If I could only choose one, should I go for a full length music video or for multiple of these mini music videos?
Damo’s answer will be ‘multiple’. This video pretty much spells that out. Don’t waste budget on a big video in this era when you can get out tons of micro content and work the algorithm consistently.
I’d go for the mini versions - I’d only do a music video if the song does really well and you want to do one. It isn’t a necessity :)
@@DamianKeyes But how would that go if someone comes to my youtube and there's no full length video to my song? wouldn't mini videos only benefit shorter formats like Instagram, Tiktok?
I disagree with one point: Don't make videos that start with "Hi I am XY, a musician bla bla watch my new single..." I swipe at XY. Show me your music first and when I like it I want to know about you. Don't waste my time with an introduction. Tell me after the song.
How to grow on TikTok…understand and come to terms with the fact that it’s a slot machine and not a blackjack table.
Hey Damian, thanks for sharing your strategy, but that's TikTok. Could you please tell us how did this results translated in terms of Spotify streams, follows on other platforms, new people on Discord, merch sells, etc?
You wrote in the description that this strategy boosted Spotify numbers substantially, but could you give us more quantitive info?
What I listened so far from tons of other people I follow is that TikTok strip the musician out of the authority. People know just the 10 seconds verse words of songs and they don't care about the artist they follow. Not even brands want to sponsor TikTok creators cause they don't see any return in sells. So if the artist you helped got a boost elsewhere, this would be the best piece of information ever. If it is mainly TikTok for TikTok growth, I would still look for different strategies
Thanks!
He got around 100K streams in the first week. The interesting thing is that the industry has a love/hate relationship with TikTok. I was at an event recently, and all they talk about is TikTok numbers - but lots of people are very scared of a platform they feel they don’t understand, which is why it’s easier to slam something then it is to work out why people are consuming.
Music works wherever consumption is, it’s always been the case and always will be in my opinion 😊
But also like anything, if you’re going to do something, do it properly. Most of the time when people try something and it doesn’t work, it’s because the execution isn’t there 😊
@@DamianKeyes Thanks, Damian :red_heart:
True
What if I am a House music producer who features other vocalists? Is lip syncing along to it still valuable if I am not the singer? Or should I focus on something else?
Thanks for sharing your strategy with others . respect from Croatian artist 🇭🇷 🫡
Thanks.
Damo big up bro
How would you propose doing this style content when you’re an instrumentalist?
For instrumentalists I think it’s important to mainly have content of you playing… but make it relevant to someone else to bring them in, for example there’s stuff sax players put out like “songs that didn’t ask for sax solos”, and then you can also link to your own stuff. It’s about getting people to want to watch 😊😊
TikTok algo does work better in US though because all users speak English - whereas if you’re in EU English isn’t first for a lot of viewers making it harder to run up that engagement and view time…
