I find it crazy that refined white sugar has a GI of 65 which is in the same ballpark as a lot of whole grains, fruits and potato. How is that possible without any fibre etc?! Sugar has been demonised so heavily but if it has a similar GI as all these "healthy carbs" then what exactly makes it bad? Like I know it's devoid of other nutrients so obviously you wouldn't replace wholefoods with sugar but if you just added it in as extra, why is it bad? You've definitely got me thinking DR, my mind is a little blown.

Sugar cane and rice are pretty much all the same family. They grow tall and are both starches / sugars. People out there are trained to categorize them differently, without even knowing it that they’ve been trained to think that way. Geez, how did all the Asian countries survive ? Well, they eat some very lean seafood too, but rice 🌾 is the dominant food on the plate. Another great one Harley !

Glycemic load is probably a more important indicator than index. You'll find that the glycemic load of watermelon would be much lower than that of sugar because of watermelon's high water content. The fiber would have something to do with that as well, but mostly because of the water content.

I still prefer getting as much sugar from fruit as possible. I agree that most are terrible (and I live in Norway to boot...), but some are quite consistently good, particularly dates for high sugar and mineral content, and oranges for hydration (and generally quite sweet as well). In certain hippie books, like Man's Higher Consciousness, several Roman historians are quoted as saying the Pelasgians, i.e. the people who originated the Greeks, lived to 200 on mainly dates and oranges, so...let's see where we're at in 100 years.

Here in the US. charities are required to list their accomplishments on their taxes and they literally just have "maintain the nutrionfacts website". That's it! Somehow their sales are 1.2M, and their costs on those sales are exactly the same so they claim to take in 2MM in donations, break even on 1.2MM in books, pay Greger 200K, run a website and sit on assets of over 1.5M while giving out $0 in grants or scholarships or really doing ANYTHING! Have you looked at their tax forms Harley?

I am giving his advice a go. Only been a week. I am 56 and have been engaged in various fitness activitie for decades, mostly weighttraining. I am a natty. I think his perspective is so against the norm that it is pretty scary to give it a fair trial. Plus getting the fat down so low means food choices are very limited and for most, any sort of vegan is already restrictive. But I hear what he is saying and after going down the gym/ high protein/restricted calories approach this is a huge change. I do weights and cardio at the weekend and cardio only through the week. A good hour a day. I am still not fully on board. I used to be on preworkot caffeine and cups of coffee a day but now Ia m down to one cup a day. This is the next challenge. Fear of sugar...wow, yes. I am biting the bullet, but I need to up the amount to conform with what he is saying and I am going for it. I really want this to work, it is a great lifestyle and in some ways fat loss is just a cherry on top.

What would you say to them? And a personal question for you would be, how often do you catch colds? I know this one may be hard to answer as your message is predicated on the assumption of your own personal health. But as you know people can look good, fit, strong and yet be very, very sick people and I'm not suggesting you are but if you could shed some light on your thoughts about the link between sugar and immune depression I'd appreciate it. @Durianrider I'm definitely skeptical of this diet of extremely low fat and insane amounts of added sugar. Seems pretty crazy, but I might actually try it for a week. Instead of adding berries and seeds to my oatmeal I could pour a half cup of sugar on top. Instead of whole foods only with seeds in my smoothie, I could add bananas and a half cup of sugar, for dinner I can eat a whole bunch of rice, corn, potatoes, and pasta. How does that sound? I'm about 120lbs 5' 6" male.

Keep your diet simple, don t starve yourself unless you want to screw your thyroid and liver, start getting fit, high intensity workout once in a while but it s more important to be consistent. Don t overexercice, you ll increase cortisol and stress hormones. Be patient. Regarding supplements, i testet a LOT haha. the only things that made a difference: magnesium glycinate/taurinate/malate/glycerophpohate, vitb12, high dosage vitd and sometimes a bit of vitc. Again i m monitored by a doctor and doing bloodtests as i was lacking these serverly. Made a huge difference in fitness and mental health

Okay stop trolling Harley because this misinformation can harm people. Refined food is very calorie dense and lacking in micronutrients and is best in moderation. Kenpner and McDougall do not say to consume sugar in the quantities you show here, they say to add it in moderation as a sweetener. You have never had to lose weight so you do not understand calorie density and satiation. There is a reason athletes use sugary sports gels for endurance sports, it is not meant for daily consumption in large quantities. It is sad because you have a great message and platform for doing good but you dilute your message with this kind of trolling.

Body is reacting great. Don’t really do raw till 4; because I often have starches for breakfast and lunch (e.g. porridge/toast & pasta). If I wanna gain more weight I just throw in a higher amount amount of fat (e.g. from avocado, nuts, seeds, tahini, olive oil, coconut cream etc.). If I wanna lean out - I just cut these down. SIMPLE. Less beans = less farts (always a bonus too).
