I've ridden horses for three decades, and I've never had a horse have a bloody mouth.

Same with me as well & I 1st started riding in 1978. Have learned how to ride from my 1st horse, Turk. He literally taught me how to ride bareback & with great patience. He was a 3 year old green 3/4 Arabian, 1/4 Welsh cross 14 1/2 hand horse. Green on Green does not always mean black & blue. We were both green. We learned together! At 1st every time he went faster than a walk I fell off due to lack of lower leg strength & balance, He would come back & patiently look at me as if to say will you hurry up & learn to balance please. Later I became strong enough & with good enough balance that we could gallop at speed bareback. Still later I was offered a position in 1982 to teach to ride Thoroughbreds for the 1st time. As Oregon`s economy was very bad in the early 80`s. I had to help out my parents with bills so I rode the Thoroughbreds bareback for some time with just a halter & lead rope on the small county track that the owner had permission to use. He did all the maintaining work with his equipment & my supplied labor. Still remember all the names of those horses. 8 in all.

Agree 100% I ride our Thoroughbred farm sire with a Dr. Cooks bit-less bridle. I actually have better stopping response with it than a bitted bridle. Our farm sire is no slouch either as he has Seattle Slew / Northern Dancer lines & his sire was a stakes winning Ky. bred horse. Toughest horse I `ve taught to ride in 40+ years. No spurs or whips used ever! Just lots of patience & proper natural methods of pressure & release.

They are scared because it would separate actual riders from abusers so fast. Granted you can hurt a horse without a bit still.

The general problem is, riders have strayed away from traditional dressage as taught in Vienna. In fact, the bloody mouth, the whipping is antithetical to the art of dressage.

I think there is definitely more to that bloody mouth than just blaming the horse. I've NEVER seen a horse with a bloody mouth. There definitely needs to be higher standards of welfare for top horses. So far I've seen some pretty unhappy horses, bad saddle fit, poor toplines, rollkur/behind the vertical, tight nosebands/flashes, and this horse with a bloody mouth.
I'm glad FEI is cracking down on the blatant issues like a bloody mouth because that does look bad even to non-horse people... But what about the over frothy mouths, pained expressions and behind the vertical riding? It's just really upsetting to see horses that are clearly not happy..
Anyway, thank you for always speaking up for the horses, Shelby! Please don't stop!

The first picture coming up googling his name is one in a double bridle with hands pulling on both bits in trot, when the curb rein should rarely be in tension, let alone pulled. “Bitten his lip” yeah sure.

I was watching this live and noticed the blood in the mouth near the end of the test. Then, as he was walking off celebrating the coverage I watched zoomed in on horse and rider as a big glob of saliva/foam and blood dripped from his mouth. This clip was then rehashed during a highlights reel with a slow motion show of the same thing. I really wish they’d called it out sooner, it was just so quiet when there was this obvious blood. Before he was eliminated he scored well enough with the judges with a very unhappy mouth and lots of tension the whole test, meanwhile there were several more relaxed pairs who did not score as high.

Let's not feel superior for doing one sport over the other - barrel racing has it's own problems, too, such as using spurs or bitted bridles with lots of pressure points, even bits with an inherently harsh mechanism, even without rein pressure applied.

I watched only 3 routines of the team eventing dressage. 2 out of the 3 had a tense/nervous horse that had a mental breakdown and explosive reaction mid routine. The third was beautiful, but I really expect better from OLYMPIC riders. Such a disgrace!

  • @MiriamPendleton

Maybe Charlotte Dujardin's difficulty has show officials more on their toes than usual. About time riders got penalized for harsh riding. Still, most top dressage riders have their horses behind the vertical not in keeping with classical dressage. Poll high not crest high as we see so commonly today.

Thanks for the explanation. First I've heard of a bloody mouth. My grandaughter is 9 and just now is starting dressage. So I'm thinking,.. this may not be a good idea. I don't like binding an animal to do unatural things. I just heard of the rider from England that got tossed for whipping a horse last year because it wouldn;t get it's knees up higher. Whoa,...it's just not that important.

Learning dressage can be very helpful, if she has a good teacher. I would encourage her (and you) to do independent study to advance her knowledge. Sally Swift’s book “Centered Riding” is excellent, (lots of pictures). also Vladimir Littaeur “The Art of Forward Riding”. I suggest she watches the older videos of past riders, like Reiner Klimke (he wrote a book also) etc.

I’d support cutting all Equestrian sports from the Olympics for the horse’s sake. If the riders are doing this when the whole world is watching what are they doing when no one is watching?
There is nothing ethical about top level Equestrian sports anymore. If they’re not in an arena the horses are locked up in stalls because the riders are perfectly fine risking injury to win something but the small risk of injury letting the horse out with a friend is unacceptable.
And before anyone asks I feel the same with racing, it either needs to be completely reformed and stop overbreeding one stallion because it won a big race once or it also needs to go.

@@pattykake7195 OMG You would take away Olympic aspirations from thousands of aspiring young riders? That is lazy and a non-solution. We need a change. I say start with the judges. They need to be taken to task when they reward shit riding. Competitors should be able to file an objection. At no cost. Then a process would be in place for a non-biased review. Any judge who is confirmed to reward incorrect or cruel riding X times will be suspended. Problem solved.

I’m finally watching the eventing dressage day now, and the commentators say Nothing about the blood- even tho there is a considerable amount and So obvious. Then I feel like I’m not seeing their mouths up close- like why are the videographers zoomed in on the rider’s chest? Or just above the bit. Someone looked like it was a rubber snaffle or maybe a copper one but they never zoom in on that so I couldn’t ever actually tell. If I was a bit manufacturer- I’d want my product to be shown in the Olympics- but it’s so weird to me how the tack isn’t zoomed in on.
And just about everyone has a flash. Why!? The whole world of people can’t ride without flashes?
And the commentators commenting on the outline of the horses- um- I don’t think we are looking at the same horses. Behind the vertical and bent in the neck without good contact? At one point they mentioned how hard it is to train a horse to put its nose in front of the vertical because of how they are shaped, maybe someone should show her what horses are shaped like when they eat grass. Funny how that works.
