When you are pregnant, it is important for you to have regular check-ups with a midwife or doctor. These check-ups are called antenatal care or antenatal visits. Antenatal means before birth. A midwife specializes in caring for women during pregnancy, birth, and after birth.
The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends a minimum of eight antenatal care contacts to reduce perinatal mortality and improve women's experience of care. However, the global, regional, and comparable country reported data are only available for the previous recommendation which was a minimum of four visits.
