    Observant is wonderful. Nothing like a +5 to passive perception and passive investigation to boost your usefulness in a party.

    • @jacopogenovese4728
      @jacopogenovese4728 5 лет назад +1

      It depends... I've been GMing regularly since 5e came out and only used passive perception once (and only to save a PC from a very anticlimactic death). I see how it could be very useful in some groups... but I would rather just straight up boost wisdom instead.

    • @jacopogenovese4728
      @jacopogenovese4728 5 лет назад +1

      @Follow the howl The only occasions where I needed stealth from NPCs so far were ambushes, and I always asked for group perception rolls. Passive perception will also completely ruin traps the way I run them, so I don't use it (I always give my players clues before and opportunities to react after the trap is set off, though).

    • @jacopogenovese4728
      @jacopogenovese4728 5 лет назад +1

      @Follow the howl Those are very good reasons indeed! I just don't like the idea of passive perception for players... it is basically the average perception roll, and it seems odd to me that you could get a worse result when actively trying to spot something than when you are just minding your own business. I may very well be wrong ;)

    • @wedlock94
      @wedlock94 5 лет назад +1

      @@jacopogenovese4728 A way to balance things out, you can give passive dcs +5 (or another bonus). A player actively searching has to beat 10 with a roll, but passively would have to beat a 15. Still allows observant characters to be observant, and your perceptive characters will still see things but players will still have to actively check if they want to find those important things.

    I'm a big fan of racial feats, such as Elven Accuracy which give *3D20's* when you have advantage on an attack!
    I'm currently using a tiefling who has both racial tiefling feats: Infernal Constitution - Gain resistance to Cold Damage and Advantage against being poisoned.
    Flames of Phlegethos - When you inflict fire damage of any kind, you become wreathed in flame that deal 1d4 of fire damage when hit by a melee attack. (To give a bit of damage back when you get attacked.)

    I was wondering how feats worked in 5e.......in other editions you just choose as you level up,
    but 5e basically builds it into your class and gives you feats that are good for your particular class.
    You don't get feats in 5e, unless the optional feats rules is applied......and you replace what your
    class has built into it. Unless i'm getting something wrong.
    Interesting.
    Thanks.....this series has helped my game alot.

    I agree with the "read carefully!" part. I was running a campaign where one member was a Gunslinger. They were pit fighting, and they fought a boneclaw. The other party member was a rogue, so he got in a ton of damage early on. The Gunslinger was using Bad News and had the Savage Attacker feat. I didn't know you could only reroll damage once per turn, so the boneclaw died instantly.

Not to mention, depending on the DM, your 30 day memory can aid you where being the best note taker cannot. Taking the Tough feat at Level 1 (Variant Human) gave my wizard 11 HP at the word go - only the second-lowest of the group. Level 2 put him at 21 HP (I rolled a five), which is absolutely nuts for a wizard, plus he's got an 8 HP (with four more from recharging) Arcane Ward to play with... that makes him technically the highest-HP character in the group. It works well, as my general character idea was "durable wizard", thus 16 CON (18 INT, naturally, as that's de rigeur for wizardry).

      Spell Sniper, please and thank you. Doubling the range of any spell that needs an attack roll (that's not touch) and ignoring 1/2 and 3/4 cover? Yes please. Get a Warlock with the Eldritch Spear invocation and Spell Sniper and you can hit targets 600 feet away with Eldritch Blast lol. On top of that, you also get a free attack cantrip of your choice, so non Warlocks can get their hands on Eldritch Blast if they want it. It won't have the 600 foot range, only 240, but that's still insanely far and it's an insanely powerful cantrip since it's designed to be the Warlock's go to attack spell at all level due to their extremely limited number of spell slots.

    I don't know why a DM would choose not to use feats (no one I've played with has disallowed them), they seem core to certain classes. Like spellcasters get thrice-punished for daring to enter melee combat with first their hit die, then concentration checks and weapon-only opportunity attacks (not to mention the uneven ready action rules for spells). You need warcaster to get anywhere near the benefits martial classes have by default. Same with crossbows: why would anyone use them without the feat?

    Two things
    1) most feats come with an ability score Improvement or a choice of improvements so you're really only foregoing one point in exchange for a feet most of the time
    2 this one's a little more for DM's if a character is playing Dragonborn let them take the dragon hide feet as just a regular ability it's the exact same thing the lizard-folk and get a natural AC of 13 + decks it's just a little odd that Dragonborn would have to take it as a feat we're lizard-folk just get it off the bat so just give it to him off the bat because it makes no sense that they wouldn't have it by default

      It doesn't quite work that way. Radiant Sun Bolt isn't technically a spell, but it is a magical attack. Its range isn't doubled, but it does ignore 1/2 and 3/4 cover. And that's assuming you met the prerequisite.

      I’ve brought this info up to my DM and he nodded and asked “Which one do you think would be more fun?” So I have a new found level of respect for him.
      And on the point of not wanting to be a player in a game with that, why? It’s the weakest damage spell in the game. Yeah at higher levels it’ll become stronger, but even at level 17 it’ll be comparable to a warlock’s Eldritch Blast. Both will do 1d10 per hit, with a maximum potential of 4 hits, and all hits require it’s own attack roll. The only differences are;
      1: The Monk has to use a ki point to get the 4th attack
      2: Radiant Sun Bolt has 1/4 (or with our home brew allowing spell sniper’s extended range 1/2) the range

    I've been having a ball with my polearm wielding mobile fighter. Yeah, yeah, polearm master generally gets paired with sentinal (and for good reason) but I can be anywhere I want and hit anyone I want on a crowded battlefield with the auto disengage from all targets you attacked this round. And if I use it in a fighting retreat, the foe that was autodisenaged from now provokes again on their turn when they come back into reach.

    I'm new to DnD, so it's a lot..
    You can take feats rather than ability scores.. on lvl 4, 8, 12, 16, 19..
    Question 🤚
    What about when the campaign first start at lvl 1? Can u take feats?
    I've seen some who already have dualwielder since the start of the campaign.. or perhaps it is just cuz of their class (rogue) ??
    Cuz I'm thinking of doing an Aasimar going either rogue, paladin, or bard..
    And wanted to make him use 2 weapons, sword & whip (for longer out of reach attack i guess? And cool concept) from the start..
    And any suggestions on which feats to take or not..

      You can so long as you're playing a variant human who gets a feat right off the bat. Alternatively talk to your DM and see if they're willing to grant you a feat based off of your backstory. You'd be surprised how many DMs allow it.

    I always wanted to play a Samurai Character again with Alert Feat. To pull off that film and anime fantasy of Grabbing his sword just in time to defect or intercept the intruder or his/her attack. To feel that badassery as a hardens bushido Swordmaster with a Katana and Odochi two-handed katana for fight Monsterious size demons and monsters to protect his lord and family from all enemies! (~˘▾˘)~ No. Sekiro, Shadows Die Twice did not inspire to play as samurai. He was a ninja, not a samurai though shared the same responsibilities. My original inspiration came from Seven Samurai 1954, Red Sun, and Lady Snowblood. Then Afro Samurai, Samurai X, and Samurai Champloo. XD

    One thing to remember with feats is that they come at the expense of an ASI. Given 5e's relatively flat math, maxing out your PC's primary Ability Score before taking any Feats is probably a good idea. There are, of course, exceptions. If you want your PC to fight with two weapons, for example, you probably want Dual Wielder as soon as possible (particularly if your STR is higher than your DEX).
    But, as a general rule, get your Ability scores sorted first.

      Yes, because I play D&D to max out my stats and be as powerful as possible, It's certainly not a game where many people just want to have fun telling a story with their friends.

      It's adorable that you think making your character more likely to succeed at the things they want to do and having fun playing the game are somehow in opposition. The story in an RPG is an emergent property of the interaction of the DMs plot/setting and the players roleplaying their characters. Players who claim to care more about "telling a story" than playing the game tend to suck at both.

    • @FuckoffletmedowhatIw

      @@nickwilliams8302 I don't think they're in opposition, I think people should play the game how they want, but I generally don't enjoy playing with min/maxing powergaming bellwhackers.
      Now I'm not saying you specifically are the sort of min/maxing powergaming bellwhacker to which I refer, but your comment is the sort of thing I see from such people. People who generally believe the only way to play the game is THEIR way.

      What a coincidence. I don't enjoy playing with pretentious elitists who pride themselves in prioritising "story" over gameplay. In my experience, they're not only using such a pose to cover the fact that they're just too damn lazy to learn the system, they have no idea what roleplay even is, let alone how to do it.
      Now I'm not saying you specifically are the sort of pretentious, elitist poseur to which I refer, but your comment is the sort of thing I see from such people.
      Now, if we're through trading insults via apophasis, perhaps I should remind you that this is literally a video about mechanical character options. As such, a person making a comment about what option is they believe to be most mechanically most effective should hardly come as a surprise to you. Scroll down and you'll find this comment section is almost entirely populated with people sharing their opinions on this subject (and people who feel the need to tell the world how cute they think Dani is or make some other content-free contribution).

    Tavern Brawler feat is my favorite for non monk melees. So much fun going apeshit with improvised weapons as well as punching and kicking. Throwing/hitting people with mugs, shoes, horseshit, angry goblins...
    Note that this feat will only be as fun as your DM allows. If this kind of feat is not their thing then you may end up in a situation where you are only allowed to do the most mundane damage after several successful D20 rolls. Example: Roll to see if you can grab your opponent, now roll to see if you can pick them up, now roll to see if you can slide them across the bar. If all these rolls succeed, you may roll a D4 for damage. Oh no, one of your rolls was a 6, you spent your entire turn doing nothing. While Gm who is super into it will allow your raging barbarian to throw a wooden table, as a one time use weapon, that does damage in a 5 ft area and will knock your opponents prone if they fail their roll.
