Hey there! I went through something similar when I got married and moved abroad to Europe during the first 5 years of my marriage The hit to our independence thing is something we both feel, even today. Simple example: for medical visits we try to accompany each other when the visit is in the non-native culture of the patient (us). For example, my husband's English is excellent; however, for whatever reason in certain scenarios he has some struggles with understanding and remembering. Perhaps this is because of the difficulty with medical terms or the different multi-cultural accents one can encounter day-to-day in my state. Another silly example is that I usually order the takeout at the drive thru because folks working at our fav spot tend to have non-native English accents and they can never understand his non-native English accent, lol and then everybody starts yelling, lol! When we're in his country, I let him do a lot of the talking since a certain level of formality and that sort of "social greasing of the wheels" are very important in his culture vs the USA. Don't get me wrong. I can get around on my own. It's fine. But it's just easier in some situations to yield to the cultural expert. So basically, we've become somewhat co-dependent when we are in each other's other culture, lol. But I wouldn't trade it for the world.
