You are the man! Just bought a used Winnebago from C.W. and they showed me everything on the RV while it was hooked to shore power. Generator started great and since I have another RV, I wasn't too worried about it everything seemed normal. Got it home to load some supplies while it was 115 outside (Phoenix) and gennie cranks but no power. checked everything and all was good. Was about to call and cuss out the salesman when I stumbled upon you video and viola, it's all good. Thanks for taking the time to help the rest of us out, even those of us that are mechanically inclined, we still need some help every now and again.
Oh, and I subscribed too. I have a feeling you'll be helping me again on something or another!
perfect and thanks for your comment and sub
Tkx for the video. No power from generator used your ideas and it was the circuit breaker on the gen. Thx again Bill
A 😊😊😊😊😊😊
*A quiet **Generater.Systems** , love the dual fuel capabilities, camper is 50 amp but the adapter helps and found it still handles the load. Haven't taken a camping trip yet, that's in a couple of weeks. Will see how well it does over a long weekend.*
Im out here in desert. Its almost 100 and 5 dogs in my camper my gen was working but ac and micro dont work been all day trying to fix it in hot sun w no luck i asked God for help and decided to check you tube yours was first video i came to and didnt know about the switch well guess what i flipped the switch and everything is working good ! Thank God for you and your video God Bless you w sumthing good im so happy and cooling off
very nice, glad your cool now. stay safe and God bless you
4 Years Later And Your Video Still Helped Someone Fix Their Problem. Thank You Sir! Appreciated Your Post! 😎
I was on the verge of bringing my RV to the shop when I ran across this video. Saved me a bunch of money I presume. Knowing them, they would have given me a cockamany story & charged me big bucks for flipping a switch. Thanks so much for the info..... You're the best.....
yes it would have been expensive and nuts. glad I helped, journey well
Thanks for the video. Out of the blue my generator quit supplying power to our rig. Thought it might be rodent damage. Traced and tested all wires. Could've saved a lot of time if I watched your video first. Turned out to be that hidden switch. I must've hit it a while back when I was cleaning the generator. Thanks again.
Thank God there is still a few good people in this world
And thank you
awe thank you so much
THANK YOU SO MUCH! I purchased a 2006 Country Coach diesel pusher and am new to the RV world. I couldn’t figure out why my Onan wasn’t powering anything. The Onan’s internal circuit breaker was turned off. I switched it to “On” and POW! Let there be AC, lights and most importantly, battery charging!
Glad I could help!
This video was a lifesaver for me today. Have a renter picking up in an hour and couldn’t figure this out
Everything worked fine on shore power and nothing with generator running
It amazes me how often a reset switch is the answer, no matter what the question!!!
Thank you !
Thank you. First time we lost power at campground. Generator would not start. Followed your three steps, not necessarily in that order but realized the RV was still plugged in to site power. Coffee is on!
Thanks ! You just saved me a lot of grief driving my RV 70 miles round trip to the repair shop. We just had generator work done because it would not start. They put a new carb on it. We tested before we left the repair shop and gen cranked and ran fine. After getting it home I tried putting the air conditioner on. Nothing. No AC anywhere in the RV. I Googled the symptoms and your video popped up as first on the list. I'd briefly looked for a breaker on the generator but did not find it. Your video showed me exactly where to look on my Onan 4000. I pulled the little switch forward as you said because it was pushed backwards to the rear. Cranked the generator and everything worked inside again. Way to go! Thank you again.
journey well my friend
Saved me
The switch on the Onan had tripped
My generator was running but no power to the plug
Little switch hidden was the key
Watched multiple videos that did not even say anything about a breaker on the generator.
Thanks so much.
journey well my friend
Thank you. You saved my wife having to listen to me complain for another hour. I would have never figured this out on my own. Thank you again so much!
Thanks for a great troubleshooting video. I had forgotten about the circuit breaker at the generator and probably accidentally tripped it while replacing the carb. Flipped it on and power was back. I appreciate you putting this out, should help lots of folks, easy checks to get your power back.
Just saved me- the shore power/generator plug- I didn’t know there was one to even look for. After watching this started a hardcore hunt and found it, well hidden.
Thanks guy from four years ago!
Thank you very much for your help! I bought a new transfer switch and installed it today. Didn't fix the problem. Searched YT, found your video....fixed! That darn little circuit breaker on the gennie was tripped. Can't even see it. Wouldn't have know it was there.
Thank You! Generator was running fine, no power, checked all the first things mentioned. It was that switch inside that had popped back. Safe travels to you sir, well done.
Sir thank you 🙏 so much for this video I did the breakers and fuses check. So I gave up on it. Had called mechanic. But was not available till next week. So I seen your video and flip that switch next to start button and theirs it goes. It gave me electricity. Thanks 🙏 a million
your welcome and journey well
Indeed! There should be a big note somewhere on the gene about that switch. Some generator models, you don’t even see it, you have to feel for it with your fingers. I had just installed a brand new gene and there was no power to the van... take a guess? ... it was that breaker switch that had flipped down. Thank you for that video Sir!
Changed oil and was in the middle of nowhere with no power.
Must have bumped the generator breaker. Saved me a ton of time. Thanks so much
I just saved a bunch of money by troubleshooting my generator with this video. The circuit breaker had been accidentally tripped. Thank you!
journey well my friend
Thank you, thank you, we’re on a two week trip, No Fla, Ala, & Ms & no power from generator, checked on board breakers, all OK, went on U Tube looking for help, found your video, didn’t even know there was a hidden breaker on gen, book did not show it, did as you suggested, it worked, I subscribed , thank you again
I'm glad it helped you David. Appreciate your comment and safe travels, thanks for the sub to.
Great tips.
I have the exact same generator in our toy hauler. It has been the most unreliable piece of equipment I've ever owned. Currently it cranks, but won't start. This is unusual for my generator as it always works at home,m but NEVER works when out camping. I've spent so much time and money on this boat anchor. I, after being let down by this genset more than once, never leave home without my always reliable H.F. 3500 watt inverter generator.
Hey, you just saved me a $250 service call with this video. THANK YOU!
Good video. I would add two things concerning tip #3: (1) the AC breaker switch should be in the up position to allow generated AC to go to your converter in the camper and onto your appliances; (2) once you have the AC breaker in the correct position, let the generator run a few minutes to build up charge to your camper appliances before turning them on. I rushed the procedure, and the appliances (micro wave, refrigerator, air conditioner) would not come on. This led me to believe there was an internal problem with the generator, that something to be more complicated an expensive to correct. It was simply the breaker switch being in the wrong position to start and, then, not letting the charge build up in the generator.
Mine is also an up and down position and I am working on this same problem. I will update once I get to work on it this weekend- I will try your trick of running before I try the power. I think I was trying too soon.
Same thing here..
Thanks so much!!! After cleaning out some mouse made messes, I must have tripped this switch, you saved me a trip to the dealer and some $$. Thanks a big bunch!!
Thank you. Got an oil change for the genny and the shop left the switch disabled on the genny itself. Didn't know this switch existed without this video. 5 min fix and 1 less trip back to a shop.
Thanks for the tip, I had changed the carburetor, started up perfectly but didnt have any AC power. So I followed the manual's trouble shooting procedures. The problem was when I read "Make sure the breaker is on" I thought it meant in the breaker panel. Your video saved me hundreds $$$,
Thank you! Your third tip was what I needed to learn. Apparently my microwave tripped the breaker inside the Onan panel. Thanks so much for the awesome video.
thanks for your comment 👍
All was well with exception of that switch on the 4000 Onon generator. I flipped it forward and my a/c and microwave now work! Like others I subscribed to your videos. I think I will be learning a lot from you. Thank you ever so much!!!
Excellent troubleshooting advice. Our Onan switch had tripped. Resetting it solved the problem and we now have power. Thank you!
You the man! I didn’t realize there was a circuit breaker on the actual generator… Everything works fine now! Thank you!!
journey well my friend
Thanks so much l thought l would have to call my generator specialist out again after paying $200 just to replace the oil l am learning so much about my used RV but watching this video of yours l believe saved me what could have been another $200😊
This is going to sound silly or stupid take your pick. We just purchased our fun mover yesterday and I was using shore power then decided to use the generator good so far right. Not being use to an RV I just fired it up and later turned on the AC well it would work plugged into the shore power it worked figured generator problem checked all the things you went through and looked good but nothing. Searched the web for help and be GODS GRACE I found your channel and here’s the silly part I didn’t know the shore power pig tail MUST be plugged into the outlet I thought it was just a way to keep the prongs good and not to beat a hole in the bottom of the compartment! 😂 Thank you sir and GOD BLESS YOU!!!🙏💪🇺🇸
journey well my friend, it's all 👍 good
God bless you brother. Your video saved my trip to take my kids to see the eclipse.
journey well my friend
You Are The Man!! My wife will be very happy. I did not know about the switch on the side of the Generator! Thank you so much!
Thank you. You saved me a lot of grief. I had mice get into the generator area and cleaning out the mess they made I must have bumped the switch off thus no AC output. Moved the switch forward and that solved the problem.
Tip #3 is the winner. For any of you folks who have a situation where the genny’s front panel is difficult to access and remove like mine (I have a Sprinter conversion, and everything is tightly packed), here’s a hack that might work for you. You do have to remove the front panel to do this the first time, but after that, you’re home free.
You’ll need a drill, a wire hanger and wire cutters.
The genny breaker switch knob has a small hole drilled through it-a perfect size to slide a wire hanger through it. First, I drilled a hole a little bit wider than the diameter of the hanger wire through the genny’s metal housing (just below the bottom edge of the front panel), aligned and level with the breaker switch. Next I cut a piece of wire from the hanger then bent one end 90° then fed that end through the hole I cut and then fed it through the switch hole. I then bent that end just enough so it wouldn’t slide out of the switch hole. Finally I trimmed the “pull” end so that it was long enough for me to pinch when the switch knob is in the furthest rear position (off). This length prevents the wire from being pulled all the way through the hole I drilled.
Now I can move the breaker switch back and forth without having to remove the front panel.
This just saved me! Letting me know that the generator switch should be pulled forward (toward me) made all the difference. I had been flippin git back and forth but stopped in the wrong position. Thank you, lo these many years later!
your very welcome
My girlfriend has a new ForestRiver Sun Seeker (2020), since 2020 and neither her manuals nor their website nor training discussed what was needed to troubleshoot the problem. Clearly a crap service from them cos your short video resolved it! Kudos to you! I'll be following you, mate!
The problem all along was that there was zero info about the need to plug the power receptacle into the box. No info, ever. Wow! A really bad set of manuals and training!
You helped us...thank you. You saved us a good amount of cash because we were already thinking of replacing the generator. It has 900+ hours on it. It was a fuse on the generator, the old school 250V. Also the switch on ours works the other way. Thanks again.
Glad I could help
Thank you - was able to walk my husband through these things from different locations and it was the breaker on the generator itself! Just saved him from a VERY HOT weekend.
journey well my friend
You were spot on…1 breaker switch on the generator and we were back up after both the AC and Micro went out at same time. Big Thank you!
I was going crazy trying to find the problem!! I have the same model generator and it ran just fine but no electricity inside. I flipped the breaker inside the RV, I flipped that button on the generator and still nothing. It was the 30 amp plug that wasn’t plugged into the outlet in the RV 🤦 voilà!! Let there be light lol I’m glad it was just that. I feel so dumb lol RV-ing is all new to me but I’m glad you helped me find the problem.
journey well my friend
Great video. I've been messing with mine on this trip for three days. IMPORTANT TO PAY ATTENTION TO THIS: In my experience, I had reset the breaker on the Onan generator (mine looks exactly like yours, but different model number) with no success. After watching your video, I decided to pull the shorepower and plug my 30 amp into my onboard outlet (so as to provide electricity to my coach), and WITH GENERATOR OFF, I then reset the generator breaker switch. It worked this time. Prior to this, with the generator running and resetting the switch it did not work! Note, too, that the switch is to be pulled toward you...away from you is off on this same type generator as in the video. So happy as it will be 100* while visiting Boston the next couple days and having the generator powering the coach air conditioner will keep my family from killing one another!
You made my day!! I had totally forgotten about that switch! Hard not to panic when it's in the 90's and there's no a/c. Thank you very, very much.
journey well my friend
Thank you!!!! The one time we are dry camping the generator stops working! Although my generator is a 6500 onan marquis gold there are 2 breaker on the side of the housing listed in the operators manual that I did not see. Thanks again for making this video!!
Yeah, the whole moving the 30 amp shore power plug to a generator receptacle wasn’t something that would’ve occurred to me. Thanks for the video!
You just saved my butt !!!
I assumed there was an overload cutout on the genny somewhere but couldn't locate it until watching your video. Back in business. Many Thanks!
Dude... You just saved me $400.00.... Never knew that switch/breaker was next to the starter button... THANKS
Thank you!!! First video out of many I found that solved my problem! It was the breaker on the generator...
very nice, glad your here
Thank you, I've been looking for this stupid generator switch and you finally gave me the angle to find it.
Thank you, family trip in eastern Washington. They tripped it with the a/c microwave combo. Reset the 30amp breaker. But the 2nd one fixed the issue. Saved the last 2 days of the vacation. Thanks again 🙏
journey well my friend
Thank you so much! I just changed my oil and suddenly no a/c power. I bumped the circuit breaker near the oil filler cap to the off position without even knowing it. You made my day!
very nice, journey well
Thank you for making this video... No light's for almost 1 week, watched your video and we checked generator fliped the switch and lights came on... Ty ty so much... God bless 🙌
your very welcome and journey well
This video might be easy one for master rvers. However it is incredibly helpful newbies like me. Thank you sir
Glad to hear not one, not two but three options to check on this issue!!
Thank you! First rv with gen. It was scheduled to come at a certain time but we are at a full hook up spot. It came breaker on the generator reacted and flipped off. Not thinking used your way and came on and the GFI was reset in kitchen and we had air and power. Thanks you.
Thank you, thank you thank you. On a trip in Alabama in July, couldn’t get generators to power the AC. Watched the video, figured out what we missed, and finished the trip.
very nice to be able to resolve a issue so quick and simple
Thank you so much. The breaker on the generator was the culprit, but I didn't find it because it's not real obvious from the front. Appreciate your help!!!
journey well my friend
Thank you for this info! We were stuck in the heat with no AC because I wanted to run the vacuum. I knew I popped a breaker somewhere but couldn’t figure out where until I saw your video. Thanks! My family loves me again! J/k
They still don’t.
very nice, journey well
ihave been looking into why i have no power from my generator for months ,and it was that stupid breaker switch, thank you sir you have done in second what my dealer couldnt do for months
very nice, have a great day
I just put a new carb in my onan micro 4000 and now that it is running fine I found I had no power. Saw your video and the little breaker on the generator was the issue. Thank you sir for this video, you saved the day.
your very welcome
You have saved us! We have hurricane Florence at our door in eastern NC and we were going to use our RV generator as we usually do to power our freezer, etc. My husband couldn't get any electric output at all. We were almost panicking (or at least I was) since if we were leaving we should have already done so. I came in to our computer and searched the problem and found your video. It was solution #3! My husband had no idea there was a breaker switch on the generator. Thank you so much for taking the time to make this video!
thank you for your comment and stay safe
Thank you so much. I added a small amount of oil, reached down in there to clean up a little spillage and must have flipped the switch. I had no idea it was there. Thanks to your video I have power again from the generator. General RV would have charged me a few hundred bucks to “fix” it. Thanks again
yes they would have. a guy commented on my video last summer that he was ready to spend 4 grand to have a new gen installed next morning as they said it needed it for sure. he found my video, removed a pint of oil and it works fine
THANK YOU!!!!! The switch on the generator was my problem....I did all the troubleshooting you described in the first steps but could not figure out that there was a breaker on the generator. You da man!
thank you
This is how I fixed mine. In the case of:
"I CAN'T START MY GENERATOR"
It's has been two years since last time it was running, so I started by checking oil level full at gen (it won't start if low oil becouse of sensores), gasoline more than 1\4 tank in my RV (also safety censors), sparkplug checked for good spark, check the manual circuit braker (ON) at front RV engine compartment for current, also cleaned the carburetor and even installed new one but same situation, then checked wires and found some has been chewed by rats so I replaced them, by this time it started but stay runing only by keep pushing the switch on all the time, so I knew it was electrical problem from the engine itself, so I took the generator out from my RV to work in my garage, ( I did this by myself with some tools and old tricks) it's really heavy for one person.
I disassemble the unit at my garage and started by removing the cover, then the cooling fan or flywheel unit (it's 2 items in one unit) until finally I was at the gen rotor and brushes assembly area and this is what I found: one more wire chewed by filthy rats plus the stinky rat nest in the middle of the generator motor coil, I fixed the wire and sanded the commutator copper contacts where the brushes are sitting becouse they were real duty with old urine from the rats.
Then I assembled everything back together and bingo it's runing like a champion.
For this project materials involved was about $60.00 including an aftermarket new carburetor and an harmonic balancer/steering wheel puller (available at any auto parts for $25.00) to pull the aluminum fan out and (flywheel).
Just picture this: (Eny engine run smooth if gasoline and DC current aren't interrupted) so following this important principle you'll always find the problem to be fixed.
Also if you have a onan microlite 4000 like mine, don't run it for more than a minute without the cover becouse you'll cook the engine real fast, also keep the eye on the aluminium fan and your fingers after cranking it in case you missing one or two members...just kidding.
After testing the gen then put the air cooling assembly back and the rest of components including the cover and done!!!
If this can help eaven one person save time and $$$ it'll make me more happy, thanks for reading!!!
Thank you, I didn't know the power cord had to be plugged in to the RV. Working now!
Thank you! We're out on our first trip and faced this same situation. It turned out it was the breaker at the generator. I completely missed seeing that and your video got us up and running again tonight.
journey well my friend
Thank you for a great video as I had this exact problem when I went to exercise my RV generator after it sitting and not running for 6 weeks. It turned out to be the generator breaker was flipped. I wasn’t aware of that breaker but will remember in future.
Same thing happened to us. After trying these great tips, it ended up our voltage regulator was bad. I was really hoping it would be one of your easy fixes💜 but it ended up being a $600 voltage regulator repair service 😪. But that's ok, our rv is working again beautifully. Great video. Thanx
You are the man!! The switch in the generator was flipped. never even knew that switch was there!! Thanks so much!
glad it helped you out. thanks for your comment my friend
Awesome, the breaker popped on mine for the outlets (GFI), turned off generator and tried to push the breaker back on. No joy. For the life of me I didn’t want to start a fire so then you can turn it off the other direction and something clicked, it had reset. Turned it back to “on” and it caught. Thanks your info was on the money.
Glad it helped
You saved me a trip to the mechanic and a lot of money!! Thanks for teaching me how to "catch my own fish!!"
glad it helped
you saved my butt! After adding oil to the unit I inadvertently hit the circuit breaker on the generator. Thanks for all of those extremely helpful suggestions!
great to know it helped you out
Oh man! This year just bought an old Class C with an Onan generator...learning everything before going to the high sierras. Just the tip about the generator hidden switch is worth thousands-LOL...especially if you find yourself, wife, and 5 year old dry camping in bear country. LOL. Thanks a bunch!
glad it helped. journey well
Thanks. I will look better tomorrow. I just spent days trying to change out my fuel pump and fuel filter. Finally got it in and working but now my electrical is not working. It's not the circuit breakers or fuses. I'll check for that circuit shut off tomorrow. thanks. I tried your other trick before about removing some oil and it worked once after that but then started acting up again. So found out it was actually the fuel filter.
WOW!! Thank you so much for your video. It saved me hours of trying to trace down the reason my internal power wasn't working. Your video (#3) was my problem. I couldn't see the switch, it was black. I flipped it forward and all is working perfect now. Thanks again!!!!
journey well my friend
You just saved my weekend! Thanks for sharing. Never knew that on off ditch was there. That fixed my problem.
your welcome
This fixed the problem! Saved me some money and time on vacation! Thanks
your welcome
We have used the ruclips.net/user/postUgkxOTeIs0vv4_9B5hsmnLsk9r930uDQLu_Y for probably 30 hours with our camper and it’s been great! The noise level is really only noticeable when running the AC and other appliances like the microwave, hair dryer, or coffee pot. It’s not huge like other ones and it has wheels so even at 90lbs, I can move it!
This is exactly what I was looking for as a new rv owner I bought a “vintage” motor home and the generator ran but I had no juice I was not aware that the shore power cable needed to be plugged in
Thanks! I changed the oil on my RVQG4000 and inadvertently switch the breaker off when I wiped some spilled oil from the bottom cover. Solution #3 worked!!!
thanks for your comment and have a great day
Thank you! Breaker switch in generator was the answer. I would never have thought it
journey well my friend
You saved me, it was the switch on the generator. I had no idea it was there!
very nice, glad it helped you
Just wanted to say thank you! I don’t know how old his video is but I was going crazy checking fuses I had no idea there was a switch on a generator that solved my problem thank you so much
journey well, your welcome
Thank you! Didn't know about the breaker switch on the generator and was able to fix the problem.
Thanks for this video brother. You just saved me in Buffalo NY. My problem was the breaker switch on the generator. I would have never seen that if it wasn't for your video.
thank you for your nice comment, glad your up and running
Thanks for the excellent video. Mine was the switch on the generator.
Thanks, you probably saved the alot of mula, read up & saw other possibilities that would cost alot.then today i saw your post first & found switch tripped on generator. Thanks again,
journey well my friend
Thank you so much for the help! The breaker inside the genny had tripped. I subscribed...
Thank you. Newbies here. Very helpful. Up and running now !
Dave! You ARE the man! I thought that I screwed up something while cleaning a it ended up being that switch on the generator just as you said. Can't thank you enough for posting this!
journey well my friend
Thanks so much! It wasn't plugged in. Your video is simple and to the point. Much appreciated!
Thanks so much!! Great video… the switch on the generator was tripped!
I forgot about the breakers on the generator... thanks for the video
Thanks so much for the help! You just saved us as we are driving through the desert.
very nice, journey well
That model is the later 4000 which has the voltage regulator & control board all combined. It is the board in view lower left side with the heat-sink. They will also not continue to run if there is no and or low/high output voltage.
Dude! Thank you! You are the man! I looked all over for that switch and you pointed it right out.
Thank you! I was so close to taking it into RV shop. Saved me time and $$ thank you!
Thank you so much, such a simple fix almost everything takes a lot of work. This was an easy one.
