Portuguese navigators find a hostile environment in the Indian Ocean, also because the Christian kingdoms they had imagined do not exist. The pepper and spice trade is dominated by Arab merchants, and rulers like the Sultan of Calicut do not want to replace them with the Portuguese. Vasco de Gama is the first to complete the circumnavigation of Africa: starting from his second voyage, warships are used. Meanwhile, Cabral accidentally discovered Brazil. Francisco de Almeida and Alfonso de Albuquerque repeatedly defeat the Arab navigators and the Mamluks of Egypt who had come to their aid. In a few years the Portuguese managed to control the routes from Indonesia (where most pepper and spices are produced) and to close - albeit partially and precariously - the Red Sea and the Persian Gulf, or rather the Arab roads to the emporiums. and Venetian merchants in the eastern Mediterranean. The Portuguese constitute a "light" colonial empire, with the occupation (often with the consent of local rulers) of a few fortified points on the coasts of Africa and Asia. A colonial empire compatible with the limited resources of the kingdom of Lisbon, but which represented an extraordinary undertaking for the time. A colonial empire that will soon end, however, due to an economic disaster and the arrival of the much more powerful and equipped Dutch, who will improve the circumnavigation route of Africa.
