Tough love works sometimes. But, it doesn't always work. The MC basically could've been incentivized to work harder but his father gave up on him too fast. He had a poor constitution and poor stamina. Training it little by little to after that practice swordsmanship would have been smarter. The MC father was so good that he thinks anyone who can't muster as much effort and determination as him is a failure. Children have poor determination. Routine is necessary. I think the biggest failure was the MC father.
