  • Clonezilla Live is a fantastic tool for cloning hard disks for backup or redeployment. In this video, I show off the process of taking an image of a Windows installation, and restoring it. This process works with Linux and other operating systems too.
    Keep in mind that if you plan on creating a Windows image for use on multiple machines, you'll need to utilize Sysprep or similar first, which is beyond the scope of this channel.

    I have used Acronis for a long, long time. It allowed me a bootable system that was easy enough to teach my noobie technicians how to run. However, it only did Windows. I am going to give Clonezilla a shot to backup my Arch install on my laptop. I am not sure how well it will handle BTRFS partitions and subvolumes, but I have a backup of my /home folders and I can easily reinstall if I screw it up. If it works as well as I expect it to, I can simply do an image of the drive on the 1st of each month, a save of my /home folders once a week and feel pretty safe.
    Thank you Jay for the work you put into getting these videos out for us.

    CloneZilla is a great tool. I used it to deploy a Linux image to 600+ laptops for a project I was a part of a few years back. I did the server install of CloneZilla for that project, as it made more sense than using the Live option. I remember it was a bit tricky to set up, but thanks to some RUclips videos, I managed to get it working. In fact I think I used your guides from 2013 to help me set it up, so thanks. =)
    I would like to see an updated version of the server install guide, as I've been meaning to install CloneZilla on my ProxMox server.

    Anyone complaining that this dude didn't cover saving to drive or USB, 5:42, he did. Just select this option and proceed through the prompts. It'll ask you for info on what drive you want to save it to, thus, select your USB or what ever desired drive. Skip the authentication/setup with his fileshare and pick up again at 10:07.
    You just have to ready, guys.

    Beware Clonezilla is a project currently being supported by a small number of people and in part time. I recently reported a problem with drive to drive cloning, the execution halting due to wrong detection of partition size. I had to post messages several times during two months to get a short reply, stating it should be a kernel problem with the current Clonezilla releases, as an year old release didn't have that problem (it had other problems such as with gpt hard drives). Don't count this program as 100% reliable, just because it is here for several years and it is well known.

    I have a distrust of such programs like `Clone Zilla`. Also the modern way to clone the system is don't use images. The Mac OS system administrators are recommending to use only installers for system installation.The file based cloning also prefer way to do on Windows platform. You are not limited by size for hard drive in this case. Do you know such way for Arch Linux? Is it possible to clone configured system by booting from Arch Linux installer? Thanks

    • @LearnLinuxTV
      @LearnLinuxTV  4 года назад

      I'm not sure I understand, this method is completely valid. MacOS sysadmins have their preferences like anyone else, but their opinions and best practices are not industry wide. Everyone an use whatever method works best for them. As for cloning Arch Linux via the method you subscribe, you could simply just use dd over your LAN but that's outside the scope here.

    • @WildMidwest1
      @WildMidwest1 Год назад

      Jay, this is not a knock against your videos which are excellent. Dimi was trying to point you in a more modern direction. Linux is stuck in the 1990s with horribly antiquated backup solutions. It is the Achilles heel of Linux ever gaining more than niche status.
      What a shame. 😢 I have been loving Mint, Fedora and Pop!_OS, but sector-level backup means none of them can be more than a toy.
      I need reliable and convenient bootable backups. Sector-level backups does not make the cut. That may have been acceptable back in the day of 3.5 inch floppy drives (because we didn’t have anything better) but it is not acceptable for systems coming with multi-TB drives in 2022.

    • @WildMidwest1
      @WildMidwest1 Год назад

      PS, yes - I am relatively new to Linux, and yes - I know about and use TimeShift. The issue here is making bootable backups, and it’s about efficient use of one’s limited time.
      As the name implies, Clonezilla is a return to the dinosaur age.

    Umm ... why do you need hard disk images on Linux, exactly? The OS doesn’t care about the precise layout of its files on disk. Just do a file-level copy, and you can restore from that, too. Let me recommend rsync as a robust file copy tool that can cope reliably with hundreds of gigabytes of data, working across (possibly unreliable) network connections etc. It has clever tricks like deduping, being able to make an incremental backup that looks, for restore purposes, like a full backup.
    For example, to move a Linux install to a new hard drive, just copy the files across, re-setup the boot loader, edit /etc/fstab for the changed device names, and that’s it. I’ve upgraded hard drives countless times that way, and never had to reinstall.

    • @LearnLinuxTV
      @LearnLinuxTV  4 года назад

      There are multiple ways of doing the same thing, that's always the case. This way might be preferred by some or a file-level method might be preferred by others. There are many different tools/methods.

    • @lawrencedoliveiro9104
      @lawrencedoliveiro9104 4 года назад

      @@LearnLinuxTV The file-level method is the most versatile. It lets you change volume sizes, partition layouts and filesystem types as you go. It works with existing file-manipulation tools.
      Sure, I use dd for things like copying a SystemRescueCD image download onto a USB stick. But for managing my important data and my OS installations, disk imaging tools are just too inflexible.
