Do you think it's a bad idea to transpose down a forth... aka up a fifth and down an octave... to learn the slide positions initially? E.G. I want an F, so I think C... or F# = C#/Db... Bb so F, etc. Personality I transpose up faster, so I'll try up a fifth down an octave.
I am a big fan of transposing , but for an Eb alto, you would transpose UP a fourth, right? You see a Bb and play Eb. I still do this with many of the tenor etudes - Bach Cello Suites, Koprash, Telemann, etc. Am I missing something in your question?
