A great reaction, thank you. Be aware that Floyd's albums are what's refered to as 'concept albums' for the most part. This means that you can expect to hear a common theme (or concept) running through their albums. Sometimes this theme seems clear, other times (particularly so with Floyd), they can take a bit of working out before you fully understand what the band were striving to put across to the listener. As a result, there are often times that one track flows traight into the next without a break, so If you hear some odd starts/endings to songs, this is probably the reason. Hence why many fans will recommend listening to whole albums rather than individual tracks.
Always innovative, always brilliant, often emotional and never bettered. That is Pink Floyd.

One of the best examples of this is "brain damage" and "eclipse" off the Dark side of the moon album. They flow from one right into the other flawlessly. So much so is most radio stations will play them both together because they just don't feel the same without the other.

They filmed this in 1971 in a 2000 year old empty Roman Arena. It was covered by Ash in 79 ad during a gigantic eruption from Mount Vesuvius. This will show you what they looked like in their mid-20s. And if you want to see what their live shows look like in front of a giant crowd check out anything from their 1994 Pulse concert.

    Great reaction!
Founding member Syd Barret had left the band suffering from the effects of drug abuse and mental health issues. He was dearly missed by the band.
If you want to find your way into this really deep rabbit hole, just work through the album Dark Side of the Moon in track order.
Each track transitions one into the next, so you can pick out random tracks but that's like reading random chapters from a book.
For reference DSotM sold well over 45,000,000 and charted for somewhere over 18 years!
    So not too shabby 😂
Definitely worth having the lyrics to hand to reference after listening.
Heads up, track 1 is a very short intro to track 2 and Floyd use lots of sound effects to create sound scapes with some beautifully crafted intro's. This album isn't simply a collection of tracks.

  • @fadiaz1969
    @fadiaz1969 3 года назад +2

This song hits me right in my soul. This song was written about Pink Floyd’s founder and original lead guitarist, lead vocalist and primary songwriter, Syd Barrett. Syd was a charismatic guy, but had been battling mental illness. Unfortunately it got much worse after he started taking LSD. Anyways, long story short, he could no longer function as a musician, or even like a regular person, and was eventually kicked from the band. Syd never really recovered and basically lost his mind. The rest of Pink Floyd band members missed him terribly. Ironically, Syd reappeared while they were recording this song. Most of the band members could not recognize him as he had shaved off every hair from his body, but roger waters recognized him. They all wept when they saw him in that state. So you can hear the pain and emotion in Roger Water’s lyrics and in David Gilmour’s voice when singing about their friend. Beautiful, and deeply emotional song. Literally brings me to tears every time, as it reminds me of someone that I lost that was very dear to me. Thank you for the reaction.

I learned how to play guitar just so I could play this song for my dog who died in 2018. Now, I also play it for my mom, who died June. Tears are a part of the deal.

Many people mistakenly think this is about Syd Barrett, but in an interview Roger Waters said quite emphatically that the only song on the WYWH album that was about Syd was "Shine on you crazy diamond". He went on to say that when he wrote the lyrics to this one he had in mind someone close who had refused to move on in life and had been left behind. He also said that at other times it meant something else, and that some days he didn't really know what it meant himself. He deliberately made the lyrics enigmatic so that the listener could make it mean whatever they wanted it to mean, and it has become an anthem for anyone who has lost someone close to them.
The opening guitar chords were composed by David Gilmour who had in mind someone listening to a poor quality radio all alone in their bedroom late at night, and hearing the opening chords, and then joining in himself with the crisper sound of the second guitar. Overall, a stunningly beautiful composition, both instrumentally and lyrically, and a work of complete genius. I associate it with someone very close that I lost long ago and it never fails to bring a tear to my eye.

The song is about former Pink Floyd frontman Syd Barrett who was suffering a mental breakdown. His crippling addiction to LSD had forced him out of the band in 1968, and a pair of solo albums had done little to resurrect his career in the intervening years.

Had to put down Mr. BoJangles Oct. 6th. He was a hard headed, bat shit crazy, aloof, standoffish kind of guy. I was with him 14 years. I miss him more than you could
ever believe. I've never cried so hard in my life. I hugged him as the vet put him down. I wish he was here.

Its good that you feel emotions from songs, That means your in touch with your empathy, thus your Humanity. Music, no matter where its from or what age, no matter the country of origin or the sex of the artist. If its dun with heart Any one herring it will feel the intended emotions. Music binds us a species.

Apparently the concept behind the intro was it was supposed to be a guitarist playing along to a song on the radio, which is why it sounds a bit far away to start with. And then the player in their room joins in. It's a song about genuine loss, and truly missing someone - so relatable. And I love the repeat in the lyric, "how I wish, how I wish you were here." You can hear the emotion.
Two lost souls, swimming in a fish bowl... wish you were here.

I first heard this in 1975 and it changed the course of my life.
I almost immediately realised that Pink Floyd's album "Wish You Were Here" would be played at my own funeral.
Unfortunately, I heard it played at my son's funeral, many years ago now.
Listening to the title track has often caused me to 'well-up.'
Since that day, however, it gets me every time.
Please try to find time to listen to the entire album, if you possibly can. Also the immediately preceding album; "The Dark Side of the Moon."
    Sorry to bring you down.

One summer I had a gf from South Africa, an Afrikaner during the end of the Apartheid era. When she went home I sent her a mix tape starting with this, followed by a selection of banned music. She told me she would drive around her hometown with it blasting out of her jeep.

I stayed with Dave Gilmour's wife for a few days while I was touring. Funny as not long after I had a mental breakdown and ended up homeless.
So I've stayed in mansions and had people love my art and then been on the street with a few years of each other. So I understand this song very well.

The song is about Syd Barrett who actually was an original member of the band (the singer) he later had drug problems and the band decided to kick him out. David Gilmour (the man singing) was the one who replaced him. It is said that one day while the band was recording this very album that Syd showed up and the band couldn’t recognize him. He was overweight and bald. The band never saw Syd again after that. The whole album was actually about Syd

Interesting thing is when they were recording this song, Syd Barrett (who the song is about) showed up at the studio. Roger Waters and David Gilmour didnt recognized him. After learning who it was, both broke down and cried. Syd was just a shell of who he once was, a brilliant artist and musician. Shine on You Crazy Diamond is also about Syd.....
