      It's proper Catholic, too! Our Choir sings this quite often! We sang it for my mother's Memorial Mass. It's a favorite. :)

    • @EC2019
      @EC2019 3 года назад +3

      @@meganmcgowan5798 Tbh no, it's not very Catholic. It's very puritan and Protestant in tone, musically.

      @meganmcgowan5798 3 года назад +1

      @@EC2019 Yes, I know... but we will still claim it, LOL! I was simply saying that we sing it very often in our church... because our Catholic parish absolutely loves it. Shall I say that it's "proper" for our parish?? 😁

    Great work, very nicely done. You've done proud to Howard Goodall's brilliant setting of this song.

    • @stuartgish
      @stuartgish 5 лет назад +1

      Brilliant setting ? The bass line is mental. It's like pick n' mix , half the words are missing. It's liturgically wrong..

    • @EC2019
      @EC2019 3 года назад +3

      @@stuartgish If you think this is mental, I suggest you check out Haydn's Missa Brevis Sancti Joannis de Deo. Apparently because the king hated long spells in church, Haydn wrote the music to have each choral line sing a different part of the text on top of each other so as to have the whole damn thing over in 25% of the usual time and they could all clear off home to attend to their regularly scheduled gluttony and lust.
      And if you really insist on whinging, please note that this hymn was written as a theme tune for a fairly raucous comedy show about a sex-starved vicar surrounded by inbred sheep-and-cousin-shagging lunatics. It was only because it became so popular afterwards that it was expanded into a full hymn including the middle bit, because people actually wanted to perform it as-is in churches. It was never originally intended as a proper hymn. "Liturgically wrong" lol snort. Context is key.

    • @stuartgish
      @stuartgish 3 года назад

      @@EC2019 I think there's a hint of a point hiding in those many lines, but I still think I'm right to point out the sheer unmusicality of the bassline and the haphazard setting that the basses have to sing. This arrangement does not point the comedy in a very funny show, so I don't think context is an issue. Must admit I'm not familiar with the Haydn.

    Absolutely love this piece! Our church choir - St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Kitchener, ON, Canada has performed it a few times and the first verse is a Soprano solo. Very touching. And yes, we all remember it as the theme song of "The Vicar of Dibley" :)

    The Lord's my Shepherd, I'll not want
    He makes me lie in pastures green
    He leads me by the still, still waters
    His goodness restores my soul
    And I will trust in You alone
    And I will trust in You alone
    For Your endless mercy follows me
    Your goodness will lead me home
    He guides my ways in righteousness
    And He anoints my head with oil
    And my cup, it overflows with joy
    I feast on His pure delights
    And I will trust in You alone
    And I will trust in You alone
    For Your endless mercy follows me
    Your goodness will lead me home
    And though I walk the darkest path
    I will not fear the evil one
    For You are with me, and Your rod and staff
    Are the comfort I need to know
    And I will trust in You alone
    And I will trust in You alone
    For Your endless mercy follows me
    Your goodness will lead me home (and I will trust)
    And I will trust in You alone
    And I will trust in You alone
    For Your endless mercy follows me
    Your goodness will lead me home (for Your endless mercy)
