I'm in central Florida and enjoy your videos, especially when you test different types of the same vegetable. It helps me figure out which ones to try. Thank you.
I’ve watched so many of y’all’s videos and just wanted to take the time to thank you both. A. The information you provide is in depth, articulate and so helpful for even those of us who have done gardening for quite a while. B. Thank you so much time for the impressive amount of time you take for each video. I’d hate to see the time calculated up for each “little video” that starts from seed, then to plant, to maturity, to harvest and all of the information you provide at each step. Not only is it impressive the detail you provide through the whole journey, but it’s beyond appreciated the meticulous way in which y’all present it. So, yeah, thank y’all for the wisdom, education and good vibes you’re always spreading on your channel.
I just placed my first order with Dixondale farm's! This is how good their CS is ..I described a style of onion my grandmother grew in the 70s for canning in quart jars with hot peppers. She instantly directed me to the right variety, and told me to dig them up while still small. Commonly called "pearl onions". I also ordered leeks and shallots, too
I watch your videos everyday now , im 58 and just learned to grow vegetables, I love growing plants but now im learning to grow veggies, youll do a wonderful job on teaching. Thank you both so so much . Oh and Thank you bing bing bing for making my day too he is a great supervisor . He needs a vest that says Supervisor 😆. Im growing tomatoe and different peppers, want to grow onion and Garlic. Like your music to, looks the animals dance to it . Thank you both again.
Thanks for another wonderful video. My onions were awful this year. But, here I am in central Indiana with red tomato’s on the vine. Praise God and blessings to you both.
Yes ma’am. It was a tough year for onions this year but often times when one crop fails a different crop really thrives! This year was a terrible year for us with onions but it was a bumper year for us with potatoes and sweet potatoes 👍
I'm so glad that you all are here for us to be able to continue on watching enjoy your video so much I'm in Louisiana zone 9b I need as much help as i can get and enjoy while watching.❤️
Waiting on onion food. My onions look great because of you and Nancy. Indiana is all sand. I was so excited when I found yall. I'm usually waiting on the TV. I thought I'd grab my phone. To leave a comment. My garden looks amazing. I love yall for😂that. Me and Big Daddy ❤🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉 Grateful ❤
You know, watching your videos are not only informative but ooohhh soooo relaxing. Thanks for all you do for us, I take all your teachings to heart & see great results. I live in an apartment And am enjoying growing garlic, potatoes, & onions at he moment. all of which are growing nicely. THANKS AGAIN & GOD BLESS YOU BOTH & BING BING🧄🥔🧅
Hollis and Nancy it's always a joy to see your videos and always informative. I wish we could grow some of the more spicy onions in the south, but thank the good Lord He has blessed us with the sweet onions, right.
Your videos are so fun to watch. So much helpful information. I Am in S FL and no land but I am growing great things thanks to you ! Zero lot line with southern exposure that helps. Many thanks and blessings to you both!
Thank you for your kind words of encouragement. We really needed that. We have been so discouraged with our Channel performance lately. Praying for God to show us what to do
Thank you for the videos. I love every one of them. We're in SWFL and have grown some nice onions from Diamond dale. We have no land, so we grow in storage Totes. Had a similar experience with bolting last season. We allowed a few to fully seed out, and harvested the seed for future use. Here's a little fyi for those that don't know, Before the seed heads seed out you can eat the flowers. Use them as toppings on salads, in soups, stews, or as a garnish on baked potatoes etc. Pretty and tasty :)
Im still so happy you guys came to Florida! I can't wait to have a few rows this year, been prepping and can't believe how fun. Cannot wait to go fishing. Great videos, I wish this was a standard in every church in Florida, we have the people, land and weather all over the state. Could you imagine if they could understand this abundance ❤🎉🎉🎉 i love you all and this community. Thank you for sharing the wealth of knowledge!
Thank you brother! So glad you like our videos. Your kind words lifted me up today. I have been a little discouraged lately with the low views on our channel. Thanks for watching 👍
Great video! Nice garden! When I have some onions bolt, I keep it in the ground and plant the seeds. I've left some in the ground after seeding, and sometimes they'll keep going, but it takes them a while. I'd leave them for the fall or the next year even and plant around them. I've gotten some very nice onions from 2nd years that have gone to seed prior. Do you ever make onion braids? You take the onions with the tops, braid them, and add a new onion every few turns incorporating the onions tops into the braid. You hang them up, and they stay nice. Many people do the same with garlic, making garlic braids. These are pretty and are a nice way to keep onions or garlic. To be sure your dried onion top (or chopped, dried onions) are really dry, you can dry them, then put them in jars in a low oven, or oven with a pilot, about 120° for a half hour to an hour on their sides propped up at an angle (a bread pan or cake pan is perfect to keep the jar tops up. Place the jars in the bread or cake pans, then into the oven. This ensures they are really evacuated of moisture, so no mold worries. Great looking onions! Now I'm hungry! 😊👍
Wow! What a beautiful crop of onions. I'll have to check out more of your videos on growing onions. I haven't had the best luck with them. What brand of scissors or shears are you using? They seem super nice and sharp! Thanks for sharing all your knowledge with us!! Happy gardening and have a wonderful day! This is the day He has made!!
Thank you for all ya'll show us. Also... I saw where you can actually dehydrate Zucchini slices n grind it down n use as a flower if your not fond of a potato bread substitute...b BLESSED
Loving your videos. I really appreciate the time you and Nancy put in. I would like to see your seed organization system you use. I'm a new gardener this year. Learning so much from you. Thank you so much.
I use a small, decorative plastic box I found at a dollar store a couple years ago. It holds quite a few packets (about 50-70 or so. 2 rows side by side). I keep them alphabetically. If you have a very large area, you can get a large notebook and use those clear plastic organizing pages with pockets a little bigger than seed packets. You can also use envelopes if you save seed from your own plants. Gardening is fun! I wish you success in your gardening adventures.
Hi, I just subscribed to your channel. April frost in Florida? That sounds more like here in Massachusetts. I like the music you choose for your videos, and it's simply enjoyable to watch you make the most of everything. Thank you.
You've taught me a lot about onions. It has also shown me with the space I have which is a lot larger than a lot of folks growing area that onions may take up too much room in the garden for the amount we would need for a year. I may dedicate one area for now to experiment and practice growing in the event that I can't get the 50# bags or at least at a reasonable price. Onions are relatively a lot cheaper to buy from the Amish Produce (organic) in my area than to buy plants. I think I'm going to concentrate of growing the rest of my fruits and veggies this year and maybe expand to grow onions at a later date.
Maaaaaaaannnnnn.......that red onion close up after you trimmed it up so nicely.....wowww. I'm in Maine so we've just planted our garlic. Besides that, it's waiting time till spring.
I truly appreciate and enjoy your videos, also y'alls fishing video at Lake Orange for crappies. What ramp do you use to launch at the lake? Thanks and keep up the great info
I live in Nashville and buy produce from “Smiley’s” at the Nashville Farmers Market. Last year they had “candy” onions, both red and white. Liked them a lot, and they last forever
I just subscribed to your videos and I live in Stockton Utah just an hour away from Salt Lake City. Where are you located? I'm assuming maybe in Texas?? I'm a Zone 6... What zone are you in? My new husband and I are just starting a homestead and I can't wait to start gardening. I'm so excited about your helpful videos!! 💕
I truly enjoyed this video. Onions my favorite vegetable. Couldn't do without them. Just been looking for some short day onions seeds. I am disgusted by some seeds salers . Who don't tell us if their onions are short days or other. And I bought some 3 varieties that were long day. I am so disappointed, wasted of my time and money. So thank you for enlightening me on some good short day ones that I will be looking for while I still have time to start over. Now if I could only find that interesting company you were talking about. We never heard of this find sounding company. Its too bad its probably unknown to so many of us newbies.
Hollis or Nancy I live in North Georgia and I’m so confused about when I should plant onions outside. I know that you are in Florida but If you have any suggestions I would appreciate it so very much. God bless you sweet friends and thank you for your amazing videos. You are loved ❤
Thank you for another wonderful video that you both obviously put a lot of time and energy into. Wishing you a bountiful fall growing season this year.
I have two questions one about watering the onions I'm not sure how wet you want to keep the ground is it the same as tomatoes and zucchini ? I love your bed you made you have the garlic and onion around the outside what size is it I was going to build one of my own but I want to make sure I have enough room for my onion and garlic
I am in TX have been watching you a few years learned a lot but why don't you have grown lights to start seeds you would have better germination rate because sometimes I noticed a few of your seed trays don't produce. I love you and Nancy her recipe are great.
Great video. You have helped me so much being a new gardener. I live in zone 6b. Can I plant garlic in containers and if yes what size? Thanks for all your help!, Love you and Nancy and Bing Bing .
I have Florida sugar sand soil. When I amend it the sand consumes it within one year. It is extremely difficult to build rich soil out of sand. Without the Black Kow our garden would be doomed. I have two large raised beds that I have amended with the cow manure for two years in a row and they are still very Sandy. This year I am going to incorporate a heavy layer of Black Kow Top Soil with the sand. Then I will amend with another 4” layer of Black Kow cow manure. I believe adding the Top Soil with the sand will help a lot. I will do an experimental video on it and take a look at the results. If it does a good job, I will add the Top Soil to my remaining raised beds. I tested it in some containers recently revealing some good water retention. I think that will prove to be true in the raised beds on a much larger scale. Stay tuned for this video. It will take at least one year to build so the video will be released in early 2024. 🤞
Have y'all ever considered planting Egyptian Walking Onions? Not sure if they have to have cold weather to thrive but they are a wonderful year around crop & they have a great onion flavor for a shallot sized bulb. At least I've had alot of luck in Pennsylvania with them. Just wondering. Thanks for all of your video's. The detail & guidance are Really Appreciated❕️ Have a Blessed Day
They do look interesting. I have never grown any. I will need to do some research on them. It may be something Nancy would like in her permaculture area. She loves stuff like that. Thanks 👍
Agreed. They absolutely love moving into an area. I Really have Loved them. I wasn't sure if my family would enjoy their flavor but we all agree, they're onions 😋 Alot of places are constantly sold out. I can send Nancy a couple.
@Cher H Are you needing a video on full grown onions in containers? We already have one for bunching onions. Here is a link for the bunching onions: ruclips.net/video/Sf-XulITthQ/видео.html
Hello guys, I'm a very new subscriber, and I am kicking around growing a small bucket garden setup. Is it a good idea to plant bug repellent plants alongside vegetables to help with pests? I'm thinking like marigolds in a bucket with potatos or peppers etc.(Or another ideas anyone has) I'm in the Disney area of Florida if that makes a difference. Thanks in advance to any who answer
Love all your videos ❤️I love onions too! I couldn’t live without onions 😁Can you freeze bunching onions? I freeze the bigger onions. Thanks for sharing the video. God bless both of you and Bing Bing too ✝️🙏❤️
Hollis: What do you think about no-till farming? I live in NJ and have sand & clay looming soil. In the past, I was amending with horse manure and cover crop mix. I limit my tilling but not completely.
Be careful with horse manure. They sometimes spray the grass hay with an herbicide called Grazon. It goes through the horse unchanged and through composting and can kill or seriously stunt your garden plants.
I deep tilled my beds until I worked out all the roots. After I had the ground worked I amended with Black Kow cow manure each year. Once I had the ground worked and amended I no longer need to deep till because I have Sandy soil. I only cultivate which is only 2-4 inches deep. Each year I layer on more cow manure and cultivate to incorporate with existing soil.
I reckon Nancy chooses that music when she edits videos? That is some sexy music! I can just imagine if you play that over loudspeakers in the field... LOL... just kidding! I started buying from Dixondale Farms about 3 or 4 years ago. I think it was your channel back then that gave me that information. I ordered mine in early October this year to ship on their earliest date that is November 14th, 2022. I'm so excited they will be here soon! I get the variety pack that has the three short day variety pack each year. It is so affordable and free shipping! It is enough for me at my homestead that is in northwest Florida. It's just me nowadays and the dog but he isn't supposed to have onions.
LOL. Nancy edits her videos and I edit mine. We select the music we want for our own videos. Yep, my onions are due to ship on 11-14-22 as well. Looking forward to getting them in the ground
I’m not concerned with bee stings. I am not allergic to them. Some people are allergic to them and should avoid them. I have found, bees don’t bother you if you don’t bother them. Yellow jackets are another story. They will sting you for no reason. Beware of yellow jackets
I just have a question. I’ve been side tracked by a very major surgery. I have thousands of dollars worth of black kow, soil, wood, peat all in my backyard that I didn’t get to use before my surgery. How long before it all goes bad? I was told I won’t be able to lift, bend and pull anything before February 2023. I’m just sad. 😢I’d managed to build a few of the items like the table, 2 container benches, 1 potato bench before my carpal tunnel surgery in June. of 2022. All the wood for the other projects just sitting in the backyard because I just had the major surgery 11/07/22.
WOW, you answered me, no one does that. You are too awesome. Trying to buy up for the cause. One day I want to buy ten acres and grow food for people that need it, but they have to help if they can. I would give food to the elderly, and to food banks. I'm 51, so I need this to happen soon, I'm not getting any younger, wish me luck.
I bought my onions from them this yr , and they looked nowhere like yours. Mine were so small and have 😮very little roots. Next yr , I am starting from seeds.
Have you guys ever done onions in containers? Not bunching onions. Like Patterson onions or any that get big bulbs like the ones harvested here? I am going to try it in containers that are 6 inches deep, 20 inches long, 16 inches wide. Just because that is what I already had instead of buying special ones new.❤😊
I'm in central Florida and enjoy your videos, especially when you test different types of the same vegetable. It helps me figure out which ones to try. Thank you.
Even tho I am in az, I am in the same zone which really helps. we didn't match up when they were in virginia.

Best of luck to you with your onions this year👍
Gotta love that olde circuit blues jammy.
Thank you for the videos. I love every one of them. We're in SWFL and have grown some nice onions from Diamond dale. We have no land, so we grow in storage Totes. Thank you! I just received my latest onion catalog yesterday.

Loving your videos. I really appreciate the time you and Nancy put in. I would like to see your seed organization system you use. I'm a new gardener this year. Learning so much from you. Thank you so much.

I am in TX have been watching you a few years learned a lot but why don't you have grown lights to start seeds you would have better germination rate because sometimes I noticed a few of your seed trays don't produce. I love you and Nancy her recipe are great.
Looks yummy
Thank you 😋
I love y'all ❣️
Those are bigger than what I got last year! I'm trying again!
Thanks for another good video! Why do you not trim the roots and top the greens before drying?
Because they will start growing new tops.
Great video. You have helped me so much being a new gardener. I live in zone 6b. Can I plant garlic in containers and if yes what size? Thanks for all your help!, Love you and Nancy and Bing Bing .
Thanks very much tomuch needed information about how to properly plant onions also thanks so much to tell us where to order the seed onions
May l know what is the best time to plant onions so it will avoid bolting ?
It always amazes me that you build the beds before planting.doesnt any of that build soil over the years? Thx

Thanks for the visit
I love to eat mild onions
Can I grow The Red Onion Southern Belle in a container. And the best time to start growing in South Florida
It seemed like that was the case for a lot of us this past year. My onions bolted early too. I agree, any harvest is better then no harvest at all🙏🏽
It is what it is ❤️. Just keep on keeping on👍
I see Bing Bing has the hardest job of all…..❤
I would like to see a short clip of the soil conditions now that you’ve been adding black cow for several years, thank you
Have y'all ever considered planting Egyptian Walking Onions?
Not sure if they have to have cold weather to thrive but they are a wonderful year around crop & they have a great onion flavor for a shallot sized bulb. At least I've had alot of luck in Pennsylvania with them. Just wondering. Thanks for all of your video's. The detail & guidance are Really Appreciated❕️
Have a Blessed Day
They do look interesting. I have never grown any. I will need to do some research on them. It may be something Nancy would like in her permaculture area. She loves stuff like that. Thanks 👍
Agreed. They absolutely love moving into an area. I Really have Loved them. I wasn't sure if my family would enjoy their flavor but we all agree, they're onions 😋
Alot of places are constantly sold out. I can send Nancy a couple.
Thank you❤️
What do you do with the dehydrated tops?
I put it in soups and anything that uses green onions 😂
I would really like to see a video on growing
Onions in containers.
@Cher H Are you needing a video on full grown onions in containers? We already have one for bunching onions. Here is a link for the bunching onions: ruclips.net/video/Sf-XulITthQ/видео.html
Blessings just a question after you plant the onions how often you fertilize. Thanks!

@@HollisNancysHomestead Blessings thank you for the video. Is going to help a lot, Great idea of the template, you guys are awesome!
👍❤️
Hello guys, I'm a very new subscriber, and I am kicking around growing a small bucket garden setup. Is it a good idea to plant bug repellent plants alongside vegetables to help with pests? I'm thinking like marigolds in a bucket with potatos or peppers etc.(Or another ideas anyone has) I'm in the Disney area of Florida if that makes a difference. Thanks in advance to any who answer
How can you long store the onions. We live in zone 8a
Love all your videos ❤️I love onions too! I couldn’t live without onions 😁Can you freeze bunching onions? I freeze the bigger onions. Thanks for sharing the video. God bless both of you and Bing Bing too ✝️🙏❤️
Yes, I freeze my bunching onions (scallions). I chop them up and put them in quart sized freezer bags. They hold their strong flavor very well.
I never know exactly when to quit peeling the skin. LOL
😂
Wild Turkey. Just past hunting season I think.
Eat your hamburger on bib lettuce.
@@HollisNancysHomestead I sure do like that music selection.
I’m a blues man for ever. 🎸🎸🎸
I'm trying Dixondale long day this year. I live in Ohio.I never grow good onions, they are always super small. Wish me luck.
You can do this👍👍👍
Hola the one I want is the Wawa onion I've been trying to find out who sells it
One of your videos sir had to do with marigolds plants for bees to benefit garden ,would that be a concern about a possible sting?
I’m not concerned with bee stings. I am not allergic to them. Some people are allergic to them and should avoid them. I have found, bees don’t bother you if you don’t bother them. Yellow jackets are another story. They will sting you for no reason. Beware of yellow jackets
@@HollisNancysHomestead thank you sir
I just have a question. I’ve been side tracked by a very major surgery. I have thousands of dollars worth of black kow, soil, wood, peat all in my backyard that I didn’t get to use before my surgery. How long before it all goes bad? I was told I won’t be able to lift, bend and pull anything before February 2023. I’m just sad. 😢I’d managed to build a few of the items like the table, 2 container benches, 1 potato bench before my carpal tunnel surgery in June. of 2022. All the wood for the other projects just sitting in the backyard because I just had the major surgery 11/07/22.
Next time you make the hose for the onions, I consider you making a piece of log sticking a few pegs in it, and use it as a roller
When is a good time to plant onions in an area that freezes from Nov to March?
When I lived in Virginia that was similar for me. I planted my onions early February with no problem
What did you do with the golf cart with dump, are you selling?
It broke down and we already sold it.
You should contact them
give me a idea what can i grow in my house at the fronth window with lots of sun like seasonings
Try some leaf lettuce varieties. They don’t need large containers and grow quickly👍
Have you guys ever done onions in containers? Not bunching onions. Like Patterson onions or any that get big bulbs like the ones harvested here? I am going to try it in containers that are 6 inches deep, 20 inches long, 16 inches wide. Just because that is what I already had instead of buying special ones new.❤😊
How do you keep the animals from eating your crops, both while growing and drying?
Fencing around the entire garden complex. I have never had a problem in the drying racks
Where do y'all buy your onion starts?
How much blood and bone meal do you go through in a year
Approx a 50lb bag of each/year
Are those wild turkeys or are you raising them?
Wild Turkeys. We plan to raise meat turkeys soon
