On est entre le drame,la révolte et la prière...que je n'avais jamais si bien entendue que sous ces doigts-là.Sublime interprétation,il faut être poète et femme pour "la" jouer ainsi!Mille bravos,M.J.P.!
This is how good you become when you focus on playing music by one composer for most of the time - and Pires had dedicated her life to bringing Chopin's music to as wide an audience as possible...and globally. For me there is no other pianist in the world as good as her at playing Chopin (apart from Marizio Pollini). I'd even rate how she interprets and plays Chopin as better than some of the all time greats like Richter. He played it extrmely well, but she breathes Chopin. Extraordinary talent!
Merveilleuse Maria !!! Magnifique. Merci Madame Pires. GP
One of the most perfectly measured and musicianly performances I've heard. Pires is perfection itself. Just as Chopin has unveiled to us some compelling and climactic episode - an odyssey of cedar panelled events at a given time in his own life - so too does Pires cross the threshold to make his music her own and give us the most superlative reading of a most superlative work. There is no excess here, but a formal beauty as noble as it is poetic and as poetic as it is grand. Bless her!
@@PhillipLWilcher Exactly. Therefore take a peek at Pogorelich's 2022 version if you have 16 minutes, you might afterwards feel grateful for the heads up. The album is on the Pogorelich "topic" channel.
@@TheSoteriologist I'm passionate about Pogorelich. I always have been. I have been championing him since the 1980s, when I worked at the ABC. Even at his most eccentric, he resonates volumes for me. One of the most memorable experiences of my musical life was attending the two recitals he gave here at the Sydney Opera House, not all that long after the Chopin Competition he should have won. I'll listen to the 2022 performance soon. Thank you for the recommendation. Blessings!
She is completely underrated as an international pianist. Her tone and artistic personality are incomparable. She recently retired. Sadly, I never got to hear her live...
She's not retired 😳 her concerts to South America were canceled last month because she does too much travelling. She was recently in the US ,Japan, and I think S. Korea. She did not have any vacation so her doctor told her to cancel her tour to S. America. Either than that she will perform in Europe as usual.
Bravo! It's rare to hear such a structured Fantasie. This is in part achieved by blocking of sections, transcending the bar lines that Pires has spoken about in masterclasses. She takes time, music time not clock time, in other words not being preoccupied in getting to the next measure at the exact moment, which gives an impression of being suspended in space. Another means of delineating the sections is by actual tempo changes. This may or may not be agreed upon by teachers (mine didn't accept it) but is probably in keeping with the correct Romantic traditions of piano playing.
Pires yet again demonstrating why she is so good at playing Chopin. Masterful interpretation and such feeling but without the histrionics of overindulgent hand gestures of some other more 'showy' pianists. Pires lets the music speak for itself instead of trying to compete with it - she breathes the music if you like. Can anyone tell me when this was filmed.......looks like in the 1980's....I'm guessing it's sometime in the mid to late 80's. Anyone out there know? she's about 70ish now (in 2012)
I do not think the piece is slow at all, I think the speed is inside that makes the score. Moreover Joao Pires is one of the best interpreters of Chopin I have ever heard.
She also added a whole bunch of bars in the Lento Sostenuto section. I was trying to follow along with sheet music and it confused me . I like what she did though!
Actually, according to my editions, it ends in A flat major. I believe it starts on the vi chord and all leads to a triumphant A flat closing; even the F flat in the penultimate chord abandons the feeling of f minor.
Kelly Anderson it is the same as if you tried to correct Tchaikovsky's piano concerto from b flat minor to d flat major, Chopin's fantasy is f minor, and ends in a flat major which is a mediant or parallel major key
Nikita Stepanenko Yes, except the Tchaikovsky begins (although unstable) and ends in b flat minor. It makes more sense to me to think of the Chopin as a grand progression, from vi-V-I in A flat. Maybe we're splitting hairs, but it does affect the way one hears the piece.
@@manuelemasini5888 People who heard Chopin play at Pleyel stated that he played very quietly, reservedly, and with a gentle touch. He had no need to impress or grip his audience with a display of passion.
@@jesuisravi listen. Do you realy know who Maria Joao Pires is and what she did, revolutionary, about Chopin and his execution praxis? No! So, shut up and go on please
Great musician but its sloppy. A little too much pedal and some finger tension in her 3rd finger on her right hand for instance. But beautiful cantabile and tone. I dont think her particular hand shape and size works well playing with a flat hand. She needs more lift for a cleaner sound.
I usually like Pires' playing, but this is just awful, in my opinion. First of all, it's a march, right from the beginning. Chopin tells us that. All of her emoting and excessive rubato makes it sound like a bunch of drunks marching. And, if you follow this with the Henle edition or the autograph, you find numerous departures from the score. There is a dot over the very first note, which she ignores (Rubinstein does, too). And her 16ths are like 32nds. For me, there is no comparison between this and Kyrstian Zimerman.
One of the greatest live performances of Chopin ever... This recital will forever be in my memory.

Maria João Pires, my favorite pianist, her wonderful poetry shared in a piano in which the music speaks of Chopin !!
Never heard Maria joão in this difficult Chopin work. Many Bravo's for this wonderful rendition! 👋💐👍

Beautiful.

Finally, the Fantasie is correctly listed as la bemol majeur (A flat major)!
It contains motifs in Ab maj but always returns and finally ends in the minor parallel key.
Actually, according to my editions, it ends in A flat major. I believe it starts on the vi chord and all leads to a triumphant A flat closing; even the F flat in the penultimate chord abandons the feeling of f minor.
Yeah, you're right, I don't know why I wrote such obvious nonsense :)

Ouh! What a pity you didn't understand the piece, and that you can not understand, consequently, the work of art that Maria Joao did with it.
