  • You've probably heard of a basket case. Well this banjo arrived in a basket so I guess it fits the bill.

    I used your super glue trick yesterday, letting it sit for 20-30 seconds or so before hitting it with the accelerator. Worked like a charm on a drop fill finish repair. Thank you and keep those vids rolling!!!🙏👍👍👍

    The best metal polish ever made is this stuff called “Neverdull” it comes in a silver can. It’s cotton wadding impregnated with polishing chemical/compound. That stuff is amazing!

    Several years ago I tried to learn how to play the banjo. A friend gave me a cheap one that he had. One night I pick up the banjo and start strumming/plucking on it. I notice something that looks like a gray string hanging out of it. It was a mouses tail! He had crawled inside and camped out. He wasn’t moving at this point. So I thought he had a heart attack and died! But a little while later he came to and took off. I can only imagine how awful it must have been for that little guy inside that banjo.

    Hi Jerry 👋 A cabinet maker taught me how to get coffee cup rings and milky stains out with ooo wire wool and pure bee's wax, I get the wax warm and impregnated in the wire wool and run it in small circles, I've fixed countless tables and pieces furniture with this method for the last thirty years 😉👍

    Back to my Aristocrat Custon Built Banjo I purchased on Facebook last year, the action was back up to about .160+ at the 12th fret, I forget how low I was able to get it before with a 1/2" bridge. The issue is there is a single connector rod that has RH threads on both ends. The neck end threads into a large nut (5/8" flats) that hold the neck on, no small stud to keep it in place. The tail piece end screws in the post that hold the tail piece J-hook and jams against the J-hook. I ordered a single connector rod set from stewmac for plan B. Lying in bed tossing and turning being kept awake I came up with all sorts of things I could try. The connector rod is only 6mm in diameter, so a hole is not hold or turn is not there. So scratching my scalp raw it came to me, the jam nut inside the pot goes against the large neck nut not the tail piece, the only way to adjust the rod is to remove the tail piece and use it to adjust the rod in and out of the neck nut 6mm end. Replace the strings since I'm at that place I have the action at about .105. Adjustment come by turning the tail piece holder 1/2 turn at a time. Close enough for government work(1). Now back to teaching myself to play. BTW I leveled and recrown the frets for experience, see (1). Y'all have a Merry Christmas!

    The murkiness/milkiness can sometimes be fixed with a folded paper towel with hand sanitizer on the top of the towel (but not against the finish). The alcohol vapors will reset the finish. Sometimes. Works on my kitchen table real well :)

    • @brad42948
      @brad42948 3 года назад

      Yep, I've done that successfully on some instruments, I make a little holder out of plastic cups to suspend the towel above the finish. Works best on spots, but I suppose it could be done on a large area.

    From what I could find on the web, that is not an costly banjo. I think he spent more on the tuners than the banjo was worth new.
    However, as long as it makes him happy, it's worth it to him. I'm sure he was very happy with your work.
    PS: Your daughters really sounded great, on that song.

    Hey Jerry. You might have tried this before. When I was a painter painting new homes, we used to do this when staining and lacquering wood trim in houses we would use some window glazing and dye to make colored putty to fill holes. Great video as always, sir.

    $100 off a machine gun! Hell of a deal!

      NOT a machine gun. just a regular semi auto rifle with fancy plastic parts that freak people out because they look scary.
      For example, .380 semi auto deer rifle...perfectly fine...put a plastic stock and handle on it and people lose their minds.
      funny thing is...same gun.

    I've had luck in the past with milky finishes by adding a coat of shellac over the top and the alcohol in the shellac dragged the moisture out of the finish and darkened it down, might not work 100% of the time but it almost always works when the finish goes milky during neck resets and the like

  • @mikecurtin9831
    @mikecurtin9831 4 года назад

    Nice job, Jerry. It looks good. Working on a banjo is a lot like working on a car or an electric guitar, nearly everything's screw adjustable. You can still do a lot of tail-chasing, but once you understand everything you know about it, bringing it all into balance is relatively painless. Thumbs up to crush a troll.

    Hey Mr. Rosa....Angeline the Baker...Doesn't sound like that when I play it! LOL. I tried using an old pendulum clock for tempo, by the time I got through the song the poor old clock was off three minutes.

    nice looking instrument, I have a 5 string IIda banjo. I have no idea how old it is or the model number because all of the labels are gone with the exception of the head stock.I googled it and everything I have seen thus far is much newer. I traded for it 45 years ago and I use to play it while I was in college. she don't look like much but she plays well. mostly play my acoustic guitar these days.

    If that is a lacquer finish, you might consider misting the finish with lacquer thinner. That is how we would get rid of the blush if we were shooting lacquer in humid conditions.

    • @perihelion7798

      It appears to be a poly finish, as that is exactly what poly looks like as it ages. Nitro ages well, but the poly finishes just get cloudy with age, and look pretty bad. My opinion.

    • @sgnt9337
      @sgnt9337 4 года назад

      Hmmm. If it is really moisture in the finish, why not try denatured alcohol?

    erase white milky patches with lighter gas or fuel as you call it spray some on the finish let it dry then set a light to it when it goes out have a cloth handy and buff it out an old french polishers trick

    What did you Spritzer the crazy glue with? I ment to ask you this on a past video. Awesome video thanks for sharing. Btw, Jerry, You pick that tenor banjo petty good. You are one of these guys that can play about anything you put your hands on. My older brother was like that. No matter what instrument he picked up. Within minutes he would play Boiling the cabbage down. Once he got that tune down he was home free. He could play about anything on that instrument. Stay well and safe my friend.

    I keep hearing that using a polish that has silicone in it will make finish repairs almost impossible.
    Could that be what is giving you the problem with the finish on the head of this banjo?

    Did I see you adjusting the ACTION with something comparable to a truss rod in a guitar?????? Oh my! That's what I do when adjusting the action on my guitar; mainly the "slight relief" under the tension of the strings! Main action adjustments are the nut and bridge on a guitar...

    • @zapa1pnt
      @zapa1pnt 4 года назад +1

      No, you did not. He never touched the truss rod. He adjusted the neck Angle (not up or down bow), by the proper method, for this banjo. He adjusted the rod inside the hoop.

    • @arctichare8185
