Its sad to see the rubbish around the nest, but here in the netherlands we found out that the coots use the thrash to make there nest. I does not mean its good to trow your trash in to the water now but at least some one is recycling.
A modern day, avian version of David and Goliath! PS I've seen that nest a few times when I walk past. Pity about the rubbish dumped in the canal there and incorporated into the nest.
Exactly what I was going to say. Nature is so amazing and fascinating and it’s a damn shame that there’s people out there who trash mother nature and don’t give a damn about the planet.
these birds are aggresive in general i've seen them attacking seagulls, geese, ducks and they did not even had to protect their chicks or eggs i wonder why...

They Will be catched by ur neighbors as soon as possible. And btw is that a tin next to the coot's nest? A little bit sad to see that:(
Brilliant. Better than my Coot Dispute video from Limehouse Cut back in January! They crack me up, Coots. They're the skinheads of the waterfowl world. They'll take on anything no matter how big! 👍😎👍
Oh man, like the avian version of Warriors. Such cool birds, hope you've seen the Coot fetching sticks from the lady on the towpath viral. Awesome. Si.
The coots I've seen were all perfectly peaceful and docile. I once got close to one and her babies. :) Then again, it's a place with lots of people and lots of geese.. so I guess they have no choice but to get along.
Coots are like Scots. They hate everyone. Even other coots 😂 We have lots of them along with swans, Canada geese and mallards, but when they're in the mood for a fight, they'd stand up to anyone. The only birds not scared are the seagulls.
Coots are like ninjas honestly, that coot didn't even get a single damn hit from the swan on it it was so maneuverable and like a well-trained karate expert or something. Angry moorhen parents attacked our swan once and it was like "WHAT THE HELL?!?!?!?!" and swam off.
Reminds me off that angry af tiny penguin protecting some random emperor penguin babies from a bird twice it's size. The babies were also bigger than their protector, but the bird didn't want any shit with that savage penguin. :D
Strange, I have learnt that Mute Swans and Coots tolerate each other. The Swan is the defender, and the Coot is the early warning. I wonder what happened?

never actually thought a coot would see off a swan especially with signets, amazing footage Ian.
I've seen Coots chase off Swans, Crows and Jackdaws... very ballsy little things😂
A very poorly placed nest but one heck of a little bodyguard
Those Coots don't mess about!!
It's so sad to see all that rubbish in the water.
HeroOfKvatch So so sad, I do my bit picking rubbish up in the marshes nearby but its never ending battle..
I'd like to say I'd go in and remove it but seeing how swans scare me and this coot don't give a shit how big his opponent I better stay away.

The Coot has a pretty badass bob and weave fighting style. Really good at countering the Swans longer reach.
Yes combined with the normal Coot never give up attitude!
A very daring coot! Too bad there is so much rubbish in and around the nest...

My heart is at peace now, because my favourite, Coot won. 😀
What would you expect from a trashy coot

This is why you shouldn't throw food into or right next to a nest. It attracts other animals and then they'll have to defend themselves.
