It’s crazy to think how Danny Devito and Rhea Perlman play the selfish, neglectful, dim-witted parents to Matilda but in real life they took care of Mara Wilson while the movie was being filmed (because Mara’s mother had cancer)
Danny DeVito also made sure Mara’s mother saw the film before she passed away. He seems like a genuinely good guy.
That really sweet of him
I think that's why they work so well in this movie. They both play awful characters, but they're good people and know how to reign it in
Also he was the narrator the director and an actor on this movie he deserves all of the awards all of the praise and appreciation movie because this was pure genius

As much as I hate Harry Wormwood, he did have a point. In Canada, he wouldn't have to pay squat.
Love the nurse's facial expressions. She smiles at first as if to say "Look, here's your daughter, isn't she adorable?". Then the way she stares after Mr. Wormwood- you half expect her to say "Fine, I'll keep her then!".
The shots of other parents cooing over babies on their way out of the car park makes the Wormwoods' reactions even more heartbreaking.
Omg one part that always weirded me out as a kid is the older brother rattling that toy in the car and his vacant expression. It just clicked that since that kid looks flushed and sweaty, its probably likely his parents left him in a hot car for who knows how long???? omg
True. But at his age he couldve opened the door himself so at least he wouldnt have died.

It was because of this scene that i thought babies are just picked off from the hospital since they didn't show the birthing scene 😅
Our neighbours had a baby infant when i was around 4 or 5 whom i adore so when they were going to move, i asked if i could keep their baby since they can get another one from the hospital 😂

As a kid I never questioned it, but as an adult, I always found it confusing. I mean was he supposed to be a Separate character or did Harry eventually mellow out and realized what he missed in his daughter?
I grew up on this movie, found it hilarious! I'm a mum now to 2 sweet babies and watching this now I'm fully shook... I just want to cuddle this fictional baby and love on her!

Personally I think the Wormwoods didn’t even actually name their daughter. When asked if they picked out a name Zinnia might made a comment like “why bother” and one of the doctors said “I think she looks like a “Matilda””.

People just don't do that as often as they should. And it's implied that they did sort of want Matilda, she just didn't fit into the rest of the family.
So I though about that, but seeing how the dad is in some sketchy stuff, he probably didn't want to bring any extra attention to him.

I think harry only wanted boys to raise, because to me, it seems they favorited the son and at least tried a little to connect with him. I think they "othered" matilda for being a girl. If she were an intelligent boy, they may have even been a little proud.

@@pokefan213 I don't know if gender was the issue, I think it was because she was different from them, period. Mrs Wormwood even said at the end "You're the only daughter I ever had, Matilda. You know I never understood you, not one little bit.". Had she been into cars like her dad, or dressing up and playing with mummy's makeup and watching TV, the Wormwoods may have spoiled her like Michael.
To be fair, they sure gave her a very nice name 😭😭

It took me too long to realize that Danny Devito was the narrator of the movie. I’m so used to hearing him being a snarling and mean father here to realize it.
Those parents don't deserve a kid like Matilda, she's way smarter, nicer, and have a nicer life without them

ya know Matilda parents my neglect her but it’s the small moments tht really matter and show they can be good people like when she was dirty and her Mom was gonna wash 🧼 her, and her Brother gave her attention when he 1st saw her, and her Father at least came to the window to see his daughter born
Only to see what he was getting ( grunts & is like " Alright, she'll do " ). Yes, if anything. Although in the original book her brother didn't participate in giving her grief later on like the parents did. In fact, Roald Dahl seemed to portray Micheal as being just as mild mannered & polite as Matilda.
You know that she's a fictional character and not a real person, right?
The Wormwoods weren't the best parents, but they were better than the Dursleys.

As seen, Matilda has a doll which wasn’t broken like Dudleys old toys . And at least Matilda wasn’t stuck in a cupboard under the stairs and had her own bedroom and clothes that fit her, unlike Harry wearing Dudley’s clothes which were too big.
