  • These video clips were taken during a performance by Michael Law's Piccadilly Dance Orchestra at The Phoenix Artist Club in London on Saturday 6th October 2018. The event celebrated the 50th Anniversary of Memory Lane magazine, which I have subscribed to since c. 1975. It is the only publication which covers the British Dance Band scene and beyond, and is a wealth of information. Most of you, who subscribe to this channel, will already subscribe to Memory Lane. If you don't, then follow this link:

Ray Pallett has edited the magazine from the early 1970s, and we are indebted to him for producing such a fine quality product for such a long time - and long may he do so. We are also indebted to Terry Brown, the tireless organiser of the annual Memory Lane Party in London; this being the 2018 gathering. I should say that tickets sold out months before this event, and it more than lived up to expectations.
This year we were treated to top-rate entertainment by the Piccadilly Dance Orchestra. The few minutes here give a taste of the excellence of this band, and Michael Law ensured that we were treated to the sounds of many great British Dance Bands including Lew Stone, Ambrose, Jack Hylton, Henry Hall, Geraldo and others. The orchestra are celebrating their 30th Anniversary this year and not only should you try and catch them in concert, but I would also recommend their superb new CD "Are You Havin' Any Fun?".

And now to this brief video (they played so much more!):
    1. My Baby Just Cares For Me - Vocal by Michael Law (You will recognise this as an adaptation of the arrangement used by Ambrose in 1930)
    2. Eeny Meeny Miney Mo - Vocal by Louise Cookman
    3. Jeepers Creepers - Vocal by Michael Law, Louise Cookman, & Martin Wheatley
    4. I'm Putting All My Eggs In One Basket - Vocal by Michael Law (as played by Henry Hall's BBC Dance Orchestra)
    5. Glad Rag Doll - Vocal by The Three Bright Sparks (the arrangement is the one used by Jack Hylton - albeit here with a smaller personnel)
    6. When You're Smiling - Vocal by Michael Law & Louise Cookman
The acoustics were good, but the camera angles were not always right. These clips were taken on my phone, and this is an amateur production. However I hope this video conveys the wonderful atmosphere in the club that Saturday afternoon. We all had great fun!

No, thank you Michael. You must be very proud of the excellence of your orchestra. The soloists are first class, and I love the saxophone section. It plays as one...and what a beautiful tone!
