    The info in your videos is great as usual, but I always find myself mesmerized by your editing. It's just SO smooth and SO cleaver that it all flows together like butter and you can't help but get a little lost in the bones of the video itself. Top notch work.

      Whoa! The real JelloApololypse! Love your videos, so don't sell yourself short!
      -But yes, his videos are just wildly entertaining on both a surface level as a viewer, and a deeper level on making videos behind the scenes (editing/etc.). I get giddy every time I see a new video from him.

      I hate to be 'that guy' but we don't have a limit on how many people we watch on here. There are probably dozens of channels in my subscription list that haven't posted in years and I'll be right here watching the next video if they come back.
      I don't think a creator should ever have to be afraid they're taking too long to make their next piece of media. At least, not for fear of their audience losing interest.

      Big deal, many other channels do the same thing, except guess what? They're more transparent about what they're doing when they're absent, as much as I like kap, the guy has such a problem with transparency that most of the community for a while now thought he officially quit, the least he can do is post an update video.

    Professional Animator and Animation teacher here. This is, without a shadow of a doubt, the single best video on the 12 principles of animation I have ever had the privilege to slap my eyeballs onto.
    I am showing it as an introduction video, in every single lecture on animation I give, I send it to my students and encourage them to rewatch it a couple of times, I shared it with most of my fellow animator friends and animation nerds, and I thank you from the bottom of my animation filled heart, for this gorgeous, beautifully edited, concisely, accurately and well written, soothingly performed and executed piece of video essay art.
    It is an absolute privilege to have this in my arsenal as a means to explaining animation to peeps.
    thank you.

It tells the story you're trying to tell in such a mesmerizing way that it's easy to get lost in the world you're fabricating. I can't imagine how much time it takes for you to do whatever rotoscoping or keying and key framing to put this together but holy crap you have a gift. The video animation is pretty much imperceptible and I can only commend you on your excellent skill and abilities for putting these together.

      The primary benefit the class provided is that the teacher could provide feedback after we practice what he's taught us. Definitely important but as far as the content goes, it wasn't too expansive compared to the video. The lackadaisical pace of teaching didn't constitute depth, it just meant more downtime.

    • @Zades145
      @Zades145 6 лет назад +60

      That's a weird takeaway from this video. 3D Animation uses all the same principles as 2D.

    • @TaranVH
      @TaranVH 6 лет назад +36

      Not all of them. Squash and stretch can be very difficult to rig without the character looking bad. "Exaggeration" has similar problems.
      The maintaining of clear silhouettes can also be done in 2D, in ways that are simply impossible in 3D. Mickey's ears are just the tip of the iceberg.
      Peppa Pig's eyes are only possible in 2D. The design would look terrible in 3D.
      And to me, there is a kind of magic and liveliness to a well-done 2D animation that you just can't get from 3D.

    • @VinchVolt
      @VinchVolt 6 лет назад +28

      The 2015 Peanuts movie did demonstrate quite succinctly that you can translate a 2D-oriented design into 3D in a way that doesn't come off as uncanny, but I will agree that there's a certain appeal to 2D animation (particularly of the hand-drawn kind) not present in 3D.

    • @LemonCurry.
      @LemonCurry. 6 лет назад +15

      Disney 2D and 3D animation are not antagonistic, they are just different support of the same animation style :)

    • @lukeothedukeo
      @lukeothedukeo 6 лет назад +20

      @@LemonCurry. Could not agree more that 2D and 3D aren't mutually exclusive. I think Disney will eventually come around to that idea, but it might take Iger leaving or a series of 3D flops. It's odd though, all the 3D movies Disney and Pixar made when the 2D department was still running were stylistically unique, but since then all the 3D stuff has been so similar that they can use the same model in two different films and no one notices. I mean, look at how human characters appear in Ratatouille, The Incredibles, and Up, each has a distinct style. Now look at humans in Inside Out and Coco, that distinction is gone (for non-Pixar movies look to Chicken Little and Meet the Robinsons, then to any of the recent Disney films). The death of big budget 2D has actually made 3D worse, that should be all the evidence needed to prove that 3D and 2D aren't opposed, but complimentary to one another.

      And they won’t ever again, most likely. The first Rugrats movie’s popularity + toy story have basically insured that Disney will continue to do 3D to stay “relevant”. It’s sad.

    While this video was really informative, it bothers me when people claim only Disney can create convincing character animation.
    If that were true, the Looney Tunes wouldn't be some of the most beloved cartoons of all time. How come people cry at the end of What's Opera Doc, or feel warm and fuzzy from watching Feed the Kitty?
    Also, Hayao Miyazaki's animation isn't exactly Disney-like, and his films aren't just some of the most beloved animated films of all time, they're some of the most beloved films IN GENERAL of all time.

    • @takahashierik
      @takahashierik 6 лет назад +17

      Of course it's not "only Disney", people give them credit because they were the first ones to discover and apply the principles and lay them out in a comprehensive way. These principles are universal, Looney Tunes and Miyazaki apply them as well in their work but in a different way. And Kap has already dedicated videos to other animations and studios and why they are great too

    I was smiling the whole time watching this. There's something about watching someone do what they were born to do that makes you feel inspired and full of admiration; Kap's videos do exactly that. The cadence, music, color, structure, and distinctive editing create a fully realized product that is just so damn good. Glad you're back man!

      He wasn't born to do this; animation wasn't coded in his DNA.
      He put in a fuk-ton of time and effort to learn and master his craft.
      What we see in people is usually the person crossing the finish line of an ultra marathon. The journey to the finish line, the time and effort to train and run the marathon is invisible, but needs to be greatly appreciated, because that's what makes them who they are.
