TUTORIAL MOK YAN YONG | WING CHUN WOODEN DUMMY | PART 2 of 2

Welcome to the SECOND PART of this new TUTORIAL on the Wing Chun Kuen wooden dummy. My name is Angelo and I have been practicing Wing Chun Kuen since 1999. I have studied several lines of Wing Chun for passion, but the heart and the bases of how I approach the system are those of the Wong Shon Leung line (fourth student of Ip Man and main architect of the openness of spirit and the formation of what, at the time, was a young Bruce Lee). Wong Shun Leung, also called "Gong Sao Wong" (the King of talking with the hands) ... but the master Ip Man, jokingly, sometimes called him "Wong one cure", because he said that when you had to deal with him, you either lived or died, as with the most bitter of medicines! 😄
Here is part 2 of a TUTORIAL on the WOODEN PUPPET. I hope it will be useful for your practice! Mok Yan Yong or Mok Yan Jong ... or Mok Yan Chong, if you prefer, is perhaps one of the most iconic martial tools of the last 50 years. Its literal translation is "wooden puppet" and its origins are lost in the dawn of time.
SOME LITTLE CURIOSITIES:
- Did you know: the wooden puppet is not exclusive to the Wing Chun Kuen system? And that there are several dozen "puppets" in different styles of Kung-Fu and also in other martial arts?
- Did you know that, already ONLY for the Wing Chun Kuen system, there are TENS of different forms / tao between them?
- Did you know that: originally the puppet was not "hung" on a wooden structure in the shape of a frame, as it is the most popular nowadays? It was planted on the ground and, often, the practice of the past with this tool also included a footwork (combined with techniques) that led the practitioners to also train movements to pass behind the opponent and then hit or to train projections!
And yes ... there was a time when our system was VERY different from how we have been shown and taught in the last 50 years. The "wall" frame that supports the puppet we know today is probably the result of the ingenuity and the "knowing how to get by" of some of the masters who attended the Dai Dak Lan in Hong Kong in the second half of the last century.
- Did you know that: probably, in the old Shaolin monastery, there was a room that was called "the room of the wooden mannequin"? This is why the origins of this instrument are attributed to Shaolin.
