How to get to town from Zurich Airport by train

  • This video shows you how to go to the city centre from Zurich Airport. The airport is served by frequent train services by Swiss Federal Railways (SBB CFF FFS), the tickets of which can be bought as soon as you reach the baggage reclaim hall. A single Second Class train ticket costs only CHF 6.80. Simply go straight on when you enter the Arrival Hall and you will reach the Airport Centre, where the train station can be found in the basement.
There are no ticket gates in the station, but there will be inspectors on the train, so be sure to have a ticket with you. Before boarding, you should validate your ticket by folding it once and sticking it into the orange machines in the platforms. Double decker trains are used, and will arrive at the Zurich HB (Hauptbahnhof, Main Station) in around 10 minutes. This has got to be the fastest and most cost effective way to get into town at an expensive city like Zurich.

PERFECT! Thank you for this very informative video. I travel a lot and always like to plan well. This is the only video I could find that details how to get a train ticket from Zurich airport to the center "step by step." I very much appreciate that. And the comments about validating--I really don't care whether you have to validate or not. It certainly doesn't hurt and it could hurt very much if you needed to validate and didn't do it. Excellent video. Thank you.

If you like to get around Zürich it would make sens to take 24h ticket as it is valid for 24 hours on all mode of public trasprotation (Trains, S-Bahn, Streetcars, Busses, Cablecars, Boats...) withhin the Downtown Zürich (Zone 110) and Area around the Airport (Zone 121). It is not much more expensiv then a Ticket just downtown Zürich.
In your case it would make sens the oneway as you are late at night and only want to get to your hotel.

IC trains stop at a few large cities along the route while IR trains stop more frequently. I normally travel 2nd class. The seats are not a lot better in 1st class. However, 1st class is quieter. If you are travelling during rush hour (same times in all countries), or on holidays, I travel 1st class as the 2nd class coaches are usually quite full. Also if you have a 2nd class Pass you can always upgrade to a 1st class ticket at the station for the difference of the two tickets.
