    What humorous (or perhaps mildly inappropriate) things have you heard or said in a doctor's office?

    • @pamelameckley5040

      Gynecologist was doing an exam on one of the girls that worked in his office (I thought was awkward in and of itsel) and he started discussing the billing during the exam. She told me that's why she "fired" him as her gyno. (Her exact words.) The same gynecologist, during my exam, was discussing how much he hates to sweat when he's at work but doesn't mind it if he's at home mowing the lawn and drinking a beer. Also mentioned my grooming, told me how he thinks it should be done. I guess he thinks there should always be hair so he doesn't feel like he's examining a prepubescent tween.

    I didn't appreciate when my gyno brought in a student without even asking me first. Ask us first, please! They're both down there and my gyno's like "take a look at this, right next to the swab!" I had cervical cancer and he was showing the student the cells. I understand that they need to learn and I probably would've said yes anyway, I just like to think I have some control over the situation and it made me angry that I wasn't asked.

    One time, I got my yearly pap smear from my general physician. I wasn't really comfortable doing this (I would have preferred going to a Female OB/GYN) but, in the moment, HE talked me into it. I was nervous and uncomfortable, my legs were already in the stirrups, and he asked me if everything was okay. I told him, "I have some anxiety about these exams. I don't like getting them, but I guess nobody likes getting them, huh?" He said, "Hahaha, you'd be surprised." Then he turned to the nurse in the room and said to her, "We have some women who like it so much that they request to have one when they don't even need one! Hahahaha!!!!!"

    I was having my 1st pap exam, age 15 or 16. It was Halloween and my 6' 4" doctor came in, ducking under the doorway, in a Cyclops costume. He was trying to lighten the mood for everybody and I was already uncomfortable with what was about to happen in the 1st place so this didn't help and I could not see his face. I'd never me him before.

Mom said when they told her to undress from the waist down and get on the table. The dr. Came back in explained mom had to lay down. Lol. He went to do the exam and mom still had her underpants on. The dr. Started laughing and left the room. The explained she had to remove her underpants and mom said she couldn't until her wedding night. The got the dr. Who just laughed harder and got a female dr. My mom never spoke to her girlfriend again. She is 93 and laughs about it now. I got my period really early before mom could talk to me about it. When it started I started screaming "I'm a witch". And ran out of the house screaming it over and over. Lol. They chased me down and mom straighten it out. I was glad that was over. Until came again. And bring things up BEFORE people are undressed. I booked an ultrasound at a private gyn, to check if it was cysts of cancer. When I was undressed, I got asked if I had a papsmear done recently. Since I was taken by surprise, I was honest, and said that I had not, so the reaction was "Ah, I'll do one while I am at it". Not even "Do you want me to take one?", but just assuming I wanted one done.
    I have severe (invisible) chronic health issues, and have due to this made a very deliberate choice to not get this done. Why? Cause risking to be expected to get a new pap done every 3-6 months for a year, risking surgery, chemo, and other things that will reduce my already minimal quality of life? No. Not worth it, for me. Ovarian cancer kills fast, so that made sense to get checked out, but something that might be an issue in 5-20 years time? It is irrelevant.
    Same goes for rectal penetration, not an issue for my sake, but many are unaware that it is sometimes done, and do not think of asking themselves. If that is a habit you have as a doctor? Let people know beforehand, so they can leave if they are not able or willing to cope with it. I have a friend that had booked a papsmear, and it did not occur to her at all that she would get a finger stuck inside her rectally (and why would she?), and reacted to this in the same way as people would react to an assault. Combine that with that there is no real help to cope with these things (even therapists will tend to focus on that "they are doctors, it is for your best interest", and kept putting the blame on her.)... and it did not end well.
    She died from cancer a decade later, that would most likely be possible to treat. This was a woman with zero history of mental health issues, no abuse, no rapes, no nothing, the only thing that flipped her over was the doctor that took it for granted that she could do what she wanted. Makes me wonder how many cases like this there is around, that is never mentioned, blamed on previous history of sexual abuse, or brushed away with that it is the patients responsibility to decline.

    • @prinzezze
      @prinzezze Год назад

      Getting a Pap smear doesn’t mean you’re setting yourself up for checks every 3-6 months that’s just if it shows anything. If it’s nothing it’s every 3 years (in Sweden at least). In Sweden a pap smear doesn’t involve any anal examination god that would be even more awkward no thanks.

    • @goingslowlynowhere
      @goingslowlynowhere Год назад +3

      Indeed. And I have no interest in followups every 3-6 months for something that might become an issue in years time, when I am unlikely to be alive. Those 2-5 days it takes for me to recover (from travel and so on) every 3-6 month? They are better spent enjoying life when I can. By now, it is a very deliberate choice from me to not risk having that information. That was taken away from me, and it took a long time for that I managed to forgive myself.
      And you are correct, rectal penetration is not something that is needed for a pap. She booked a papsmear, and the gyn had a "let's do it all while we have you on the table" approach, and checked her more thoroughly, without giving her time to think. I know of others that have had similar experiences, and it seems frequent enough that I have started to ask before I as much as take off my shoes. If they then tell me that they have that kind of habit, I leave. If they can blindside patients in one aspect like that, they are likely prone to it in others.
      I am just too worn out for that kind of games by now.
