  • One of the most frequently mentioned obligations in the Bible is to "welcome the stranger." Since the 1980's churches and synagogues have offered sanctuary to undocumented immigrants who are facing deportation. Correspondent Lucky Severson reports from Southside Presbyterian Church in Tucson, Arizona where the movement began. Rev. Alison Harrington said, "My scriptures don't ask me but command me to stand with those who are being persecuted and those who are being oppressed."

Stranger and illegal immigrant are not interchangeable words so this position these lawbreakers use is not valid. Standing with the oppressed and persecuted has nothing to do with encouraging and enabling people to break the law. How dare you misuse God's word to justify breaking His command to give to Cesar what is Cesar's, in other words, follow the rules of the govt from where you are. It makes me sick knowing that young children, especially girls, are sent with thugs to be brought into the US illegally and they are repeatedly raped, abandoned and/or left to die just because these people have heard if they get into the US there are sanctuary cities and churches.
Jesus said over and over "Go and sin no more" when He encountered people engaged in a sinful lifestyle. Not once in the bible did Christ protest, lead a march, encourage breaking the law (except when it was in direct conflict to God's laws: Have no other God and the primary responsibility of the Believer is to spread the gospel. Jesus said to go visit the prisoner in prison not to hide them from law enforcement or break them out.
Why should these people have to leave their country in order to have a better life? Why is not the church active in these communities, where the illegals are coming from, with food banks, job skills training, schools, etc. Why is it when I look at Child Fund and Compassion International websites are there hundreds of children waiting for sponsors? Samaritan's Purse has numerous projects from clean water, farming supplies and livestock for the poor to schools, job skills training, building safe homes and meals. Why are these types of Christian organizations working in these improvised and dangerous countries not receiving more money and help than they need?
Did the disciples hang around Jerselum waiting for the stranger or did they go to where the strangers were and first preach the gospel?
These type of people is why Jesus said many will claim to be believers but He will say I don't know you.
