- On this channel we are all about enjoying art - and guess what? it doesn't have to be perfect - in fact - making mistakes along the way is how we learn, right?
In this tutorial I show you how I painted this (very green) apple using Derwent Inktense Pencils, and how I made a few (erm) mistakes along the way.

I struggle with Inktense, yes, but thanks to you, I'm getting closer to what I want from them. When you show mistakes or less-than-you-like moments and discuss how you addressed them, it's FABULOUSLY helpful. Thank you so much for all your wonderful videos.
Oh I’m so glad you found it helpful. Thank you
It’s lovely. Despite the mistakes you had pointed out it still looks effortless. Yet I know that it’s a learning curve and practice combined with experience will ultimately yield the results we are looking for. Thank you Helen.
Hi Elizabeth. Thank you so much. Yes, I do make mistakes from time to time LOL
Wow, I never realized I could create a usable color palette with the inktense by making a set of swatches. Love it! Thank you
Thanks Libby. I love Inktense’s versatility
You've redeemed yourself commendably well, Helen! This is odd because it was this type of medium that got me interested in doing color art. Long story, but this past summer, I was in hospital far longer than anyone should (like, almost the entire summer, but I'm still here so no complaints!). They had this little arts and crafts group you could join. I liked coloring in the little pictures they gave us with ink brushes like you used here. So, when I got home, I ordered a very inexpensive set (big mistake!). Some brushes flowed well, others not, so eventually I thought, "Oh the hell with these things! I'll get watercolours instead!". So that's what happened. Seeing what you did here with them, maybe I'll try to follow you on the video with another (better!) set. Thanks so much! Michael (Rembrandt Fool #27)
They are really lovely to use. For me, easier than watercolour
I am such a fan of the Derwent Inktense and appreciate every example how to use them best. Thanks Helen!
Thank you very much x
I'm always so impressed by how you use these, Helen!! Thank-you for sharing this with us!! What a GORGEOUS piece! 👏👏😍❤🐝
Many thanks Dr Bee 🐝 ❤️😘
Thank you for this scrumptious apple demo! Your colours are beautiful - and I love that thin waterbrush you are using. I have Derwent water brushes, but have not managed to find such a lovely thin one. Thank you, dear Helen, for your beautiful demonstrations, and the line drawings you so generously supply - I have learned such a lot from you, and don't miss any of your videos. May the new year bring you happiness, peace and prosperity in abundance! Love from South Africa xxxxx
Thank you so much for your support Veronica it means a lot. Oh that brush is wonderful. I’m glad you enjoy the videos x
Just received my Intense today! Looking forward to seeing what I can do……😊
Brilliant. Can’t wait to see. Actually in today’s launch I use them with watercolour so you may want to try that too. Launches in a couple hours from now
Love the inktense projects! Many thanks
Thank you Claire
Helen: wow!!! I love your technique and how you explain what and why you are doing. I've been watercoloring for a couple of years now, coming from forty plus years of tole/decorative painting with acrylics. I love INKTENSE and, thanks to your tutorials, am learning how to use them. They sure give give you more "bang for your buck". Thank you for sharing your wonderful talent.
Thank you very much Terry. I try to mix things up a little. Watercolour mostly but Inktense now and again. I’ve a few Inktense tutorials now and just finished filming a gouache tutorial which I really enjoyed x
Been a fan of these pencils for a long time. After many, many mistakes, I've found it's better to use them directly on the paper, rather than as watercolours, as it avoids hard edges, and gives much more time to blend.
Absolutely. They are very versatile. I love them
Loved the purple! That was a great step. Not sure about the dr Ph white....for me it always feels a little like it sticks on top. Nice tutorial!
Thank you. It needs to be used with caution x
Beautiful painting and well explained. Happy Holidays and Prosperous New Year! 🎄Thanks
Happy holidays to you too Teresa and thank you x
I have tried them but not with much success however I am definitely going to give them another go, I have also tried the intense blocks I like them better give them a go you would probably like them
I’ve tried the blocks. I prefer the pencils I have an Inktense block tutorial here if you want to try

@@helencampbell thank you Helen I will watch and give it ago I have only been paining for around 1yr I wish my painting's were as good as yours but sadly that's not the case, 🤣 sometimes it's frustrating I hope I will improve with time and practice. Love your videos you are so talented. Thank you for all your hard work putting these videos out, I watched one were you showed us what entailed in getting a video out I was shocked how much work was involved. 🤗
Thank you Elizabeth. It’s all about practice (and enjoying it of course 😘)
I’ve never thought to use the Inktense pencils like you do. I use other of their products, and I love them. Would you consider using another of their line of pencils, please?
Hi Angie. I don’t have any of their others. Sorry.
Don't really see the advantage over regular watercolours...am I missing something? Seems OK for small, detailed work but not big washes or where you want the colours to blend and bleed, which is what I really love about watercolours!
Hi Tim. They won’t lift off when layering on the way that watercolour does. Some of my viewers struggle with that so these can work better for some people. Plus they are designed to work on different surfaces such as textiles etc
@Helen Campbell thanks for that. I had seen them before but couldn't quite work out what the advantage is. I keep coming back to just getting good at watercolours, I am like a kid in a candy store when I go into an art supply shop!!
Even watercolor pencils won't create 'big washes'. But inktense definitely blends and bleeds if you work the area while everything is still wet. When dry, the colors are permanent and can be covered with other colors and not disturb the layer below - so you can get a visual 'blending'. You'd want to approach them as a completely different artistic tool, rather than looking to perfectly duplicate watercolors.
Absolutely. I’m still quiet new to them but as you can see, they can be used many ways x
@@helencampbell interesting. i was under the impression paper matters m9re than paint when it comes to lifting as my paint will lift a lot on some and barely at all off other papers. (i haven't tried inktense pencils either ) very interesting video and comments!
It looks awesome!
Thank you
nice
Thank you
Just need to mess and mess with the water to get it right. I tend to go to thick with the paint and have to pick up
Try not to add too much water to start with. Pick up a small bit of pigment at a time
What paper are you using for the swatches? I've tried mixed media paper, but it doesn't work well.
You’ll need a good paper for those. I used Saunders Waterford 300 gsm cold pressed
Hello Helen, Please can you let us know which sharpener to you recommend for this pencils? Thank you🙂
Hi. I have just used a regular good quality one. Nothing special is needed
@@helencampbell Thank you!
No problem
Thank you Helen. I ha6ve both inktense pencils and blocks collecting dust in the cornered because they are so different than watercolours and I couldn't get it. Do you , by chance, know and can share the ones that are lightfast! Please? Also thank you for sharing your oopses.
Hi. I don’t they they are lightfast sorry
Hi Helen, thanks for all your videos. May I ask which watercolour brush you are using
Thanks Susan. I have listed all the brushes in the description. I’ve also mention in the video
Are these pens recyclable?
I’m not sure
Really nice…
Thank you Andrea
First!
Yay x
