  • This has been on RUclips for a long time. Recently, I captured it from a 1946 film shown on TCM called The Great Morgan (i. e., Frank Morgan, the Wizard of Oz), a hodgepodge of out-takes from other films. I think the quality of TCM's airing is better than the source for the original post; so, I thought I'd post it. I also made an attempt to crop those parts of the film which are shown as if on a projection room screen in a studio. I did that to make the video full-frame throughout (but not very smoothly. Unfortunately, there was nothing I could do to eliminate the scene of the people in the projection room, without wiping out most of Ziggy Elman's trumpet solo. We do get to see Buddy Rich and two soloists from the reed section that I can't easily identify. Some believe (with good reason) that this is an out-take from the 1942 film, "Ship Ahoy".

It is from 'Ship Ahoy'. MGM retained two songs by an uncredited Sinatra, but maybe felt the public got enough of Rich in 'Hawaiian War Chant' and 'I'll Take Tallulah'. Deadpan Virginia got to sing 'Poor You', following Frank, when not fending off Bert Lahr.

MGM eventually released this in a short support feature only shown abroad, called 'The Great Morgan'. The thin linking story for leftover oddments had Frank Morgan (glimpsed at 1:25) trying to become an impresario; cf Metro's 'The Great Ziegfeld'.
