Great observation. HxH really did capture that unexpectedness of life, the unpredictable nature of reality, as well as the harsh cruelty of it. And also, the wonder and mystery of it. That's what really drew me to the show, and put it at the top for me. That, and obviously the writing of the characters and how they behave in this realistically brutal world. How many of them are even more human than human, including the inhuman. The respect for the audience really comes through, and it's really hard to believe that a show like this was written for a young and inexperienced audience.
But if so, I could see this show teaching some really good life lessons to young minds, and I really respect it for not sugarcoating them or holding hands through heavy-handed exposition. Even the exposition it has never feels unnecessary. If I had seen this as a kid, sure, I might have started graying way earlier, but I may have avoided some poor decisions along the way.

Meruem casually moving at unfathomable speeds and knocking out two of our protagonists might just be the most effective way of telling the viewer that that the antagonist can no longer be defeated by conventional battle shounen means. There is no punch big enough to deal with him anymore.

8:45 You may or may not already be aware of it, but I recommend The Righteous Mind by Jonathan Haidt. It goes over some interesting studies that have been done that show that the unconscious emotional side of you makes a decision, and then the conscious logical side of you justifies it. At least for decisions on which you don't spend large amounts of time deliberating. But even then, a deliberation is just a series of many smaller decisions.
"Wow, the last stand coming down to Palm and Ikalgo is so crazy." This is something I really love about HxH. In real life, there are no main characters. Togashi lets coincidence and logical conclusions take precedence over what might be more dramatic. Similar to how Yorknew ended, with a prisoner exchange and absolutely no finality for anyone, because that's often just how things work out.
