Thanks for the chat, Andrea! Regarding the Mysterious Shortening Sleeves, your response about bigger biceps suggests that our bodies also change over time, causing fit issues. It reminded me of Arne, of Arne & Carlos, remarking that clothes tend to “shrink” over time in the closet! 😂
I'm so happy that someone brought up getting gauge knitting continental, I always hated the fabric I got, even if I went down two or three needle sizes....went back to my roots with my version of English & I ALWAYS hit gauge!! Just because Continental is so popular does it mean it's right for everybody!!! 😘 Thank you!!
It’s so interesting how we’re all so different! I started as an English knitter who could never meet gauge and switched to Continental! I was also a crocheter, so holding the yarn in my left hand matched how I crocheted. I think that’s why it worked out for me. Knitting is awesome!! There’s a dozen ways to knit so we can all accomplish the same beautiful garments!! ❤
The mysterious shortening sleeves could also be it felting at the arm pits through wear if they’re using a non-superwash yarn especially if they like the sleeves fitted. I have had this happen to my sleeves and to socks all the time!
Yes my husband is tall, 6'3" and needs longer sleeves and longer body and somehow the exact same thing happened. I did cut off the cuff and knit the length longer and the blocking stretch makes sense. I will pay close attention to length before blocking the current project for him! He didn't like hearing the question though because I got the side eye when you said "5 jumpers". because he only has one!
I also have mysterious shortening sleeves for my sweater sleeves. Pretty much all of them. I have long arms so I already make a point to knit extra. I also enjoy having longer sleeves because commercial sweaters are never long enough. But as I wear them, after a few wears, the sleeves shorten. I block and pull to elongate but it eventually it shortens... I have also had to add to cuffs. Hmmmm
The waterlogging in the sleeves thing i can definitely vouch for, as I had knitted a wonderful, long cardigan and it fit perfectly before blocking and my gauge swatch had no issues whatsoever with stretch... Well, I wet blocked the cardi and when it felt dry 2 days later I tried it on and it was SO LONG!!! Like, borderline a dress. I was so upset and thought all of my work had been for nothing so I avoided it for a few days and it sat for a while. When I got it out to at least add the buttons to see if maybe just the draping was what made it seem so long, the sweater had relaxed and the rest of what I assume was extra water still in the wool had evaporated out of it, and everything shortened up as I wore it throughtout the day. Ended up being exactly the size pre blocking, just smoother lines. I am very happy I decided to try it on a second time.
For the loose knitter, I am also a very loose knitter. I've had some success switching up the way I tension my yarn around my fingers; maybe try looking up different ways you can tension your yarn and experiment. Hope this helps! 😊
I'm late to the party but re:shortening sleeves. I've had this happen when working with nonsuperwash wools! The arms, with wear and as they kind of start to felt, shrink up! This is less noticeable on the body because it doesn't get as much wear/as much movement as the arms do. I add length to my sleeves (and socks!) for this reason now. Superwash can grow over time and nonsuperwash can shrink!
I agree Andrea. The loose Continental knitter could try changing her knitting style to right handed. I used to knit Continental and I actually gave up knitting for a long while because I disliked my loose stitches and fabric. It was so inferior (in my opinion and to me) from other people’s knitting. I happened across a video of Irish Lever Knitting (right handed flicking but needle is held like pencil resting above thumb flap.) It 100% changed my knitting. Tightened everything up. My knitting fabric is perfect now and my stitches so neat and consistent.
I'm so bad at word recall. It's a stress disorder aka anxiety. The harder I try under pressure, the worse it is. I have trained myself to relax over the years.
My husband also have the shrinking sleeves problem! 🤣 He likes to roll up his sleeves when he is doing stuff, making them 3/4 length.. I think this also creates that same kind of stretching of the sleeves, making them shorter..
I used to have the same issue with shortening sleeves, especially on sweaters that have more fitted sleeves. I’m very picky about sleeve length, so I ended up going back and lengthening quite a few of them. I now default to adding about 1.5-2” more than I think I need and am much happier with the end result. The amount added is determined by the fit of the sleeve. If it’s tighter, I add more. If it’s looser, I add less.
Another consideration for the sleeve length is elbows! I find that as I wear my sweaters the sleeves crease up at the elbows from bending, which causes the length to shrink up a bit.
for any loose knitters, if you knit very loosely it might be worth reviewing your technique. i am all for knitting your way and whatever is comfortable for you, with the one caveat, if its not working for you to achieve the results you want! i was lucky to watch and learn from maternal elders as a child, and it really gave me an idea of how technique effects the result. may i suggest watching a lot of different youtubers knitting to see if you can make a modification that would help :)
For the person having gauge issues. I had a pinched nerve and tried Lion brand knitters gloves for weakness in my left hand. My second sock circumference came out 8.5 inches compared to 9 without the glove. And the stitches were more uniform. Same 64 stitch pattern for both. Totally unexpected result but I throw with my left hand so maybe it makes sense.
Three more days!!! I’ve been isolated out of my crafting space for a week with Covid. My son has his PlayStation in the same room, so I haven’t gone in. His dad and I both have the plague, but the kiddo remains plague free! It’s a small price to pay for keeping him healthy, but I’ll definitely be excited to get back to my felting and spinning projects.
Hi Andrea, excited to see your Big Cozy Cardi. I blocked my body/giant rectangle/ I feel like it would be a lovely baby blanket! 😂. I will be sewing up the sleeves this weekend. Can’t wait to start my O’Dang! I am using the color Pixie from FDF indigenous collective. It’s sooo pretty. Thank you for adding WIP’s. Because this has been on my needles since January. Such a great long knit❤️
Loved the episode and so glad you’re doing better! I totally understand needing to take time off as I am not only working a full time job but also trying to build my own business with my hand dyed yarn! I’m so exhausted and stressed and unfortunately I am a single 50 plus so one day was all I managed but it was nice! Thanks again for your podcast!
Ha yes, sleeve creep is a thing! I find no matter how generously long I make them they shorten with wear - for all the reasons you say plus the effect of bending the elbow and shoulder, and sometimes a bit of fulling through friction. With less processed, more natural wool yarns anyway - the opposite happens with linen or silk. I'm slowly learning to just suck it up and make them what feels like way too long in the first place, but it's always a battle with my impatience to cast off and be done.
For the loose knitter, consider making a smaller size than recommended, if that is possible for you. I often make a size or two smaller. Just watch the row gauge, you might have to add length in some places.
So many good topics and explanations that you review today. Makes the time go by faster as I work on the tedious task of untangling yarn I have found in my stash.😁
Yay! Looking forward to the new patterns! Also, if gauge is too loose, wouldn’t you try a heavier yarn and smaller needle vs a smaller needle and lighter weight yarn?
In regards to the Mysterious Sleeves 👻👻 Maybe the fact that a more fitted garment will probably be more prone to felt in the underarm area, and that can cause some shortening 🤔 Definitely knit them longer taking this into consideration
I am able to see all the episodes by selecting "Playlists" and then "I'll Knit If I Want To". I recently caught up on all the first year episodes during a long road trip. I also just checked and they are still there and accessible. Sorry if this got posted twice...
Andrea, I bought several if your patterns, the last one, morning rituals is going great….until I separated front and back. I can see or understand at what hight from the increases for the sleeves….6 sts., I have to star cables again….it has to be there, I know, but can understand where….
Same here about the mysterious shortening sleeves 🙋🏻♀️ It happens with the sweaters I knit for myself. It’s never been a problem, though, as I usually knit the sleeves extra long, about 1-2 inches longer than would be necessary even for my very long arms. (That is probably because I still try to make up for many years of wearing ill-fitting sleeves when I was still wearing store bought sweaters 😂)
I’m so happy for you, that you are getting the rest that you need! I am also so excited to hear that you have two new pattern coming soon!! I have started the Vellichor sweater for your knit along (though I haven’t posted yet, must do that 😊). I love your patterns and love your podcast and love learning from you! ❤
I have the same frustration as the loose knitter in that first question! Exactly the same and it is so frustrating. I'd hoped to fix it with getting serious about swatching but it has only shown me the perimeters of my problem. Doesn't matter so much with many shawls but not so great for sweaters and cardigans. I was dismayed to hear your advise but I will give it a try. I orignally learned English knitting and was often unhappy with my projects because there was a difference in tension between my knit rows and my purl rows, making for an uneven and even bumpy fabric. When I learned about continental style I found that not only did my knitting smooth out and look great but I LOVE the ergonomic motions. It just feels so wonderful and joyful, especially purling. But I will do some tests to see the differences since I haven't done English style for several years now. If that is the answer to the gauge problem, it may break my heart LOL
Im a loose knitter too! I just knit continental with small needle sizes. I can do socks on 00 just fine..same feeling about continental being more ergonomic…..
I also tend to wear sports bras and tank tops. If you don't mind sharing, I'd love to know which ones you find comfortable, as it's almost time for me to get some new ones. (My current ones are wearing out.) Thank you for another great episode! I hope your transition back to work goes nicely!
Great episode as always! Funny enough, I find my sleeves can shorten over time throughout the day- I think it's from bending my arm and movement? I've been making them a little longer lately to compensate.🥰
Question….I can’t be the only one. Many times when I need a sweater and I’m ready for sleeve island, I will knit the sleeves separately, like socks. Then Kitchener, the sleeves to the body of the sweater. Have you ever done that and what are your thoughts on that?
I don't know if it's the solution but I feel like elbows are also partly to blame on the sleeve shortening. Arms straight, fits great, but somehow overtime the elbows do something or another that make the length shorten?!
Hi Andrea! Over a year ago I asked how to modify necklines in patterns to make them smaller. The question never got answered. About 3 videos ago, someone asked the same question and you suggested to look into your previous videos to find the answer because you've gone over this numerous times. I've looked at your previous videos and still cannot find the answer. There are so many patterns I like, but in my environment, it would be too warm to wear shirts underneath my knitted sweaters to get the coverage I want. If you, or any of your lovely followers happen to know which video answers this dilemma, I would greatly appreciate a response. Thank you so much. I have learned so many wonderful things from you. I am also a knitter who switched from continental to English knitting to get a tighter guage. I learned this from you and it has made my knitting much more professional looking!
I watch Knitty knatty and she talks about using different sizes on the pattern to adjust, for her it was sleeve circumference. So the body is a 2 and the armholes were a 3. I don't see why that wouldn't work for the neckline as well unless it's a V. Several other podcasters have discussed adjusting different parts of the body in a pattern. Young folk knits, Kacie talks about chest sizing a lot and has done some neckline adjusting on a few patterns. So depending on if it is top down or bottom up, there are different solutions. Top down you can easily start out with less stitches and bottom up would be a matter of decreasing till you get the right look you want. I'm no professional by any means and have not actually done this as I've not needed to yet for a pattern but I would do a you tube search for adjusting the neckline and see what comes up. Also, if you are knitting top down and adding the neckline after the sleeves, check your fit. Natalie from Knitty natty suggests doing the neckline before finishing because it can affect the sleeve length and the fit of the rest of the sweater. I hope this helps and you find what you are after. Good luck!
Hi Andrea, as always - LUV every episode. I would really like to get one of the KNIT hats you’re wearing. I tried the link you provided, but it gives a 404 error code. Can you help? Thanks
My Continental isn't loose...and all I could do when trying English is make knots. (Not really...but when I was a girl, it was. I only do English when doing two-color knitting. It's less efficient.)
Mysterious shortening: I’m not sure that “true row gauge” explains having to lengthen sleeve TWICE. I wonder if he is loving the sweaters a bit too much- possibly leading to under arm felting that pulls the length up over time. Hard to tell without inspecting what is going on with the knit fabric/texture etc.
Hi! I cannot remember who said that but I watch another podcaster who mentionned that her elbows always stretches her sleeves and she’s been knitting them longer since she noticed that, so they « grow » to the length she wanted. Maybe it’s a similar problem than what your viewer is experiencing

In reference to the mysterious shortening sleeves, I find my armpits felt a little which seems to cause my sleeves to shorten a bit
I wonder if she knit the sleeves wider if she would stop losing length. If they are fitted with negative ease I could easily see them shortening.
I was a really loose knitter, English style, but when I learnt how to knit continental my gauge tightened up significantly.

Crosswords are great! I can't stand it when I forget my words! 😅
Can a cowl be used to join the knit along?
Shortening sleeves, could they be felting slightly with so much wear?
Another great Q & A session. You are a joy to sit with once a week.

fyi - the link for the Degan hat is faulty.
I wish you a good transition back into work.
