- When the New Testament Saints prayed for redemption by power, they probably didn’t expect it to come by a cross. So it shouldn’t surprise us that when the Latter-day Saints prayed for redemption by power, they didn’t expect it to come through the temple. When the Lord fights our battles sometimes it happens in unexpected ways, but redemption is certain through Him. This week in Come, Follow Me we will be studying section 102-105 of the Doctrine and Covenants. Here is what you have to look forward to this week:

Thank you is not enough. I was 7 when I first learned non truth taught to me in a religious school. Their mistaken Doctrine. When you told the story of the 7 year old boy (whomever it was as his name is in question) it mattered not. I burst into tears as I knew the Lord had a role for me back then that I had not seen yet. When I found truth 50 years ago I knew it! How grateful for the Holy Spirit that teaches through your laughter and great preparations. God bless you both some more.
One correction: The story of the boy @21:57 is told in the Book, The Life of Joseph Smith the Prophet, written by George Q. Cannon, 2nd edition, 1907, page 344. However, the story is NOT about George Q. Cannon; rather, he is a retelling of a story about Lyman O. Littlefield, who was 13 years old at the time. It's still a great story. Here is the quote from the book:
As we recollect Elder Littlefield's statement, it was this:
The journey was extremely toilsome for all, and the physical suffering, coupled with the knowledge of the persecutions endured by our brethren whom we were traveling to succor, caused me to lapse one day into a state of melancholy. As the camp was making ready to depart I sat tired and brooding by the roadside. The Prophet was the busiest man of the camp; and yet when he saw me, he turned from the great press of other duties to say a word of comfort to a child. Placing his hand upon my head, he said, "Is there no place for you, my boy? If not, we must make one." This circumstance made an impression upon my mind which long lapse of time and cares of riper years have not effaced.
Wow! As you taught this lesson, the Spirit taught me so many things I was writing nonstop! I can’t even share them all. I received amazing personal instruction and I’m so grateful to you for teaching with the Spirit even through video/podcast. This lesson answered many questions and confirmed many thoughts I’ve been having. Thank you for pointing us back towards the temple. I am going to ponder more on its importance in my life and in the Lord’s plan for Zion. Sending you both BIG HUGS! ❤️❤️❤️
I eat an olive every day...I mean I love olives, but this is special...I put the olive on a white saucer, and ponder for a few moments on Jesus, and how grateful I am for him. Then I slowly eat the olive. Maybe that sounds strange, but not to me. Olives remind me of the Garden, and I eat it in remembrance of that special event, and what it means for me. Kinda like the sacrament, but not! Just my own special remembrance ❤

The Lord wanted 500 people to learn the lesson personally. But only 205 went on Zion's camp to learn personally. How blessed we have been with the testimony and strength of those diligent souls who went. For the longest time I have wondered about the success...or not, of Zion's camp - thank you for giving me a new perspective today. I loved using the parable to teach this. It's so important that we don't compartmentalize the scriptures. Using them as a whole brings greater understanding and testimony. You two are awesome.

Funny how the Lord works. After listening to your podcast today I went in to do some indexing. They always have those photos that pop up which you can click and see how you’re related to them. Well I clicked on it, and I went down the rabbit hole. I was able to discover from this one photo that I am a descendent of one of the families who was in Jackson county when the Saints were persecuted and forced out of Missouri . My fourth great grandfather was only six years old with his family, when this event happened. The Lord’s intent for sending Zions camp was not for the purpose that the Saints intended. But the Saints intent for going down was for the purpose of liberty, justice, compassion and charity for their fellow saints. This perspective really touches my heart. Because it was for the intent and purpose of helping my own family and Zion to be redeemed. To restore to them that was lost. Though it was not to be be. The very idea of these men being willing to lay down their lives for my families sake is monumental!

What was most meaningful to me was your discussion of power-the mind of power God wants to give us and what we need to do to access it. Thank you for clarifying and sharpening that parable in a truly relevant way.
My third great grandfather John Madison Chidester was recruited fir Zions camp in Michigan by Hyrum Smith. He joined Zions camp with his family. My second great grandfather. John Peck Chidester was a child about 7years old at the time. So the children part is of interest to me, especially the small number. Three of my grandchildren are also descendants of George Q Cannon so they have that legacy on both sides of their family.

Excellent lesson on power which is the Power of Faith and not on the Power of the arm of Men. The Temple Endowment and the Power of the Priesthood in Faith then God can fight our battles. Follow Christ's direction in Faith.

I believe the story of the boy in Zion's camp was Lyman Littlefield, not George Q Cannon, as he didn't come to Nauvoo until 1843. BUT, I love you guys and all your efforts to teach us and help us love the scriptures!! Thank you for ALL you do!
Thank you for all those who helped me find the correct reference for the story of the little boy. Though the lovely principle of helping everyone belong remains it was not George Q Cannon but Lyman O Littlefield, according to all the comments. He would've been 14 at the time and interestingly was not counted among the children but one of 205 men. I wonder what age the cutoff was to enlist? I'm still trying to find a list of the 9 who marched who later became General Authorities.

I was dreading reading these sections, but you have helped me understand the lessons to be learned. Every time Emily says , “You’re going to love…” I find that I do.
Plus , I loved your including the story of 7-year-old George W Cannon. He is my grandmother’s great uncle. I’d never heard this story before, Thank you for sharing it.

I love that you love the “and you love…” phrase because my defiant heart thinks, “don’t tell me what I love not. I’ll be the judge of that, “ every time it’s said. Lol
I feel like not understanding the importance of Temples and specifically understanding the covenants made there is a big problem in the Church. I’ve had many friends and family go inactive or leave altogether after going through the Temple for the first time. It’s heartbreaking! I’ve been to Temple prep classes and hardly anything is explained about the endowment and symbols and the covenants made. I feel like we need to do better at this somehow, because people just aren’t getting it. We need a whole class about Temple covenants and how they tie into the promises to covenant Israel from the Old Testament.

I love the story of George A Smith. I think he was a bit older though. I think he was born in June of 1817? That would make him going on 17 when he marched with Zions camp. Still a young man but not a little boy. Regardless, I’m sure George like each one of us indeed needs to feel we have a place. ❤️. I’d love to hear Joseph Smith want to help me find my place. I guess through all he left us he’s been doing just that! Beautiful lesson!

You may want to check the story about GQC, my great grandfather. He and his family were still in Liverpool in 1834. John Taylor and the missionaries baptized the Cannon family in about 1840 and they came to Nauvoo in about 1842.

Right! I had to check on this too. The story didn't make sense to me either. I come from the line of Mary Alice Cannon Lambert (sister to GQC) and they didn't migrate to the US until 1842.

I highly recommend the book, The Prophet Joseph Smith written by George Q. Cannon. When he wrote the book in the 1880s he was one of the Apostles. Excellent book! Lisa Bunn

I loved this study, thank you! A personal interest for me was learning of this story from George Q. Cannon. My husband is one of his descendants, and this is such a lovely story. I am sure it is in a family history, but I must have missed it along the way. Thank you again!

Just a suggestion you might want to read George Q Cannon history in Gospel Library.
I do so love your commentaries and find that they add understanding and insight to my own studies. However, when you told the story of George Q Cannon and Zion’s camp my interest was piqued. A decision he made impacted some of my ancestors and my ears always perk up at the mention of his name. I wanted to know more so I began researching. The first problem I found was that Elder Cannon’s family immigrated to the U.S in 1840 and Zion’s Camp was in 1834. Then I found an article about the woman and children who had accompanied the men in the BYU studies. An excerpt from the journal of Lyman Littlefield matched the quotation you had read. So perhaps my hero, Elder Cannon, was not with Zion’s camp after all. I hesitated to share this information with you because I don’t want to criticize but it seems you might want to know. Please continue your videos. I do love them and I know others who do also. Thank you so much for your efforts on our behalf.
yes you are right! we misspoke. George Q Cannon wrote the book about the life of Joseph where he quoted Lyman. So it wasn’t George on Zions Camp. It was George quoting Lyman.

The Saints Volume 1, page 215 says there were EIGHT of the original latter-day 12 apostles in Zions Camp. You suggested 9. What is your reference? Updated maybe?

Why isn't there an exact number of men ,women, children in Zion's camp? I have really, really,really, heard five different numbers from five different podcasts.....I guess it doesn't really, really,really, matter 🤣🤣

Love that story about George Q Cannon but can you please post the reference? I ask because the Gospel Topics entry of the LDS library app suggests that GQC wasn’t baptized in England until 1840 and emigrated to the US in 1842. Could this story be about someone else?

I can't help but think that Zion's camp wasn't a celestial people yet because they still didn't have a temple. Also, I think the Lord asked them to walk 900 miles because He knew they would need those tight bonds with each other going forward.

Oh my gosh! Do you remember that song from the 90s from "The Proclaimers" - I Would Walk 500miles? When you talked about walking 900 miles, that song popped into my head and at the end where it says "...to fall down at your door", I thought of the temple doors. It was amazing 😊 And I love that they are called "The Proclaimers"

I disagree respectfully. It used to bother me too, now I just think that they are both so in tune And I appreciate that they both respect each other so much that they don’t interrupt unless they feel like they have something that really adds to the discussion right there. They work really well together and their energy is why their format works. Very engaging in my opinion. But you are entitled to your of course hahaha!
