This movie's script has so many great bits of writing just like that, I love it
I think I always knew what the subtext was behind that quote, subconsciously. But reading it in your comment drives home the fact more powerfully that Luke said plainly that he hated himself. I hadn't thought too hard about that line of dialog before. "...look at the fuckin way I turned out." That is so sad. He saw himself as worthless. On another note, I have to disagree with you on the last part of your comment. I don't think that his son turned out like he did. He surpassed the sins of his father and went on to live-what we can assume-was a happier life as it is symbolized at the end of the film when he drives off down the road.
His son doesn’t end up like him at the end of the movie. He was on the same path as him, like his dad Jason was misguided struggled to find himself and ended up resorting to committing crimes and things like that. But Jason choosing to spare Avery is him choosing to change his fate and at the end of the movie he is seen leaving to a place beyond the pines away from his fathers sins.

That's what makes this movie so much more impactful and impressive! But also I know there's probably people out there who wish Ryan Gosling was with Ana De Armas in real life...lol. Just because of how they got along in Blade Runner 2049. Then there's also people who probably want him to be with Emma Stone because they REALLY get along well with eachother and have done quite a few good movies together.
