Cool video and thanks! Ok. So now we get down to the nitty gritty. Cabling. I'm running Cubase 13 Pro and my interface is a small Presonus StudioLive series 3 mixer. i want to connect my stereo compressor to use on my master buss but I'm not entirely sure of the proper wiring. Do you have any ideas that might help? I'm already using the comp as an input comp for 2 of my vocal mikes. Any he;p would be greatly appreciated!
I have watched so many videos on this subject and although yours seemed the most easy to understand.. I fear I’m still doing something wrong but I think it’s in my routing. I just got a dbx 676 channel strip and I am able to use it as the front end source but not as the plugin inside Cubase. I can’t figure it out. I am using an audient id44 I read that I only need to come from the output of the dbx and into the insert jack on channel 1 or 2 of the interface but that already makes me think it’s not going to work because I keep hearing send from input x and x and come back in on x and x and I guess that’s where I get lost at. Sorry for the super long story I’m fairly new to adding outboard gear I’ve only ever set up to have stereo 1 & 2.
Thanks for this video I have a question, if I do this method with the drum track and change the physical buttons to adjust the drum track Then I wanted to change the physical buttons for the vocal track Does this mean that the drums will sound change with vocal track? if I want to add special settings to each track using one device like warm audio EQ. Is this possible?
Hello! Great question! It would change the EQ on both tracks at the same time. So when I get an EQ set that I'm happy with on a particular track, I then export/print the track and re-import it to the project. BUT, what I do most of the time, especially with guitar, bass and vocals, is I get the EQ and compression set before tracking. Then when I track the line it has the EQ and compression printed to the recording. I then use in the box plugins to make any tiny adjustments I need. It sounds like more work, but I'm actually mixing fast and better because my sound it more dialed in from the start.
What are the cords called you plug into your external preamps into your sends in returns do you need those cords to process or no and if so can you please send a link where I can buy the exact cords because I don’t know exactly where to purchase them thank you in advance I appreciate it
Depending on what gear you have, you'll either need XLR cables or (what I use mostly) TRS patch cables. They usually come in a bundle like these. www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/CSS845--hosa-css845-1.5-foot Let me know if that helps!
Hi Zach! Im just little bit confuse about stereo. How to connect the output 3 and 4 of the 18i20 interface to WA73 EQ? There's only 1 TRS input and 1 TRD output at back of WA73 EQ. Appreciate your help.
With the WA73 it's only a mono piece of gear. So you wouldn't be able to run it in stereo less you had the 2 channel version of it. I use mine on the front end as a mono signal chain and then all my stereo offboard gear I usually just use on my master bus.
hello,,thanks for sharing that idea,,now tell me is that method works even if you arre mixing down your song as exporting it into wave audio file,,not mixing in real time?
What I do when I'm wanting to apply the off board gear to the entire mix, I place the insert on the master buss. Any time you use an external drive on your project, you'll be forced to export in real time. I also print individual instrument tracks that have an external inserts on, and import them into the project, then I can use them on any track I want. You can also use an external device with sends and returns from channels in your project.
@@ZachWirchak so meaning you can export the whole DAW arrangement and convert it into audio wave file while using external hardware effect on your computer without playing the whole DAW into the mixer ? is that what you saying please explain for me there im learning
@@bhekimkhwanazi8825 if you have a finished song and you want to apply the external device to the entire song, you can add it as an insert/plug-in to the master faded in your DAW. Then you would export the song in real-time in whatever format you're wanting.

So if you’re using inputs from the 18i20 for analog gear, this obviously is taking away from inputs you would have used for instruments, right? If that’s the case, and you don’t own an ADAT interface to open more inputs/outputs to the 18i20 what do you do to use analog gear to record drums and such? Can you use multiple audio interfaces in one DAW per recording session? 🧐

Interesting! Sounds like it's in an open loop. But I'm not sure why it's be like that. Have to tried going into a different set of inputs on the Saffire Pro to see if you have the same problem? Also, with that Saffire, are you using Focusrite Control? Or some other sort of software I/O?

@@alihanapiyahofficial24 You should have the option to adjust the send and return level of the audio signal with Cubase. That can help balance everything out.
