Just watched your video mate, glad it worked out that Adam got back to you. Wee learning point for the future make sure you've got some sort of emergency bivvy bag or foil blanket in your pack in case of similar circumstances or God forbid one of you has an accident requiring you to take shelter on the trail. They weigh nothing and take up no room in your pocket or pack but could be an actual life saver.
thats a really good idea! we were so under prepared for this. 👍
The honesty in this vid is amazing. Most of us have hit zero energy level on a ride, it's the absolutely worst feeling, but after a wrong turn in the freezing cold and wet conditions.....
You were lucky not to get hyperthermia..
Plan for the worst. Emergency blanket, waterproof, microfiber cloths etc...
Tow rope is a good one.
Also knock on someone's door, order a taxi...
Whatever it takes.
You get the idea.
Great video. You seem like a nice fella Gordy, look after yourself.
thanks Paul, yes woefully under prepared, it's a hard lesson learnt though, next time will be better prepped
Mate what a vid,had a few times were I’ve been caught out by the weather but not as bad as that, but what doesn’t kill us makes us stronger 🤪
cheers Andy, you riding much at moment?
@@DownhillDesireMTB not as much as I want but giving my self a big push to get out so watch this space 😉
looks like you's did the bloody bush trail, which takes you onto border of Scotland, we've done similar ride twice last year and the fireroad takes you to Newcastleton trail centre, then fireroad all way back to Kielder. We had a blast around Newcastleton trail centre and headed back to Kielder, we were on e-bikes tho, its an absolute killer on a normal bike. Think it ended up being about 45 miles. Its terrible for signs. Kielders never been the same since the storm a few years back. We used to love doing the lonesome pine trail up to the boardwalks and great blast down. Was meant to re-open last year but still hasn't been. Been In a few of these situations before.
yes bloody bush, never done it before so didn't realise we were on it, i was epecting to turn onto it from boardwalk where you can turn right for LP. yea nearly 2 years since storm and still lots of closures, i went up deadwater on sat and loads of that is closed, will be very differn't up deadwater when it reopens the forest has gone!!!
@@DownhillDesireMTB I think they are making more new trails on the deadwater side, there's a trail called up and over that is always closed but they are taking all the trees down and putting a new trail up there so hopefully be good.
@@johnas7 ooh i wonder when that will be ready.
Hello mate I’ve been watching your stuff for a while now …. I think you’d benefit a lot from getting an emtb …. You should seriously consider it
i would love one, busy renovating house at moment and its a £ drain. hopefully end of this year though!!!
I know where you’re coming from and I’ve been there myself …. I’m in your age bracket and I’ll be honest, it’s a total game changer , best thing I’ve ever bought was that e-bike , it’s kinda like when your a kid and you go off with your mates for the first time with an e-machine !!!!
Looks like you need a sat nav Gordon!
wow what a ride and one you will never forget. So pleasd it had a good outcome. I recall a lad you may remember from RUclips EMTB Ryan. He and some mates had a similar incident up that way on. I belive the trails up kielder can link up to the trails in Newcastleton Scotland. I know from my younger days when i used to travel to Keilder often that the landscape up there can be brutal if your not prepared especially in poor weather. I do hope you look into setting up some navigation apps on your garmin. I have set up mainly Komoot as its a good one for planning routes on my pc or phone app. When out on a ride following a plotted route the gamin will re route you back to your trail if you do take a wrong turn. It will also give you turn by turn directions and you can access info showing upcoming hills and the likes. And as others have said its well worthwhile carrying something like an emergency foil survival blanket along with first aid and the likes. I always have even when riding places like chopwell. The older brother of a school friend was in a mountain rescue team in Cumbria when we were kids he would always tell us about the calls they had been on and warned us so many times of what can go wrong. To this day his warnings are in my mind when preparing to go out on a ride or hike.
Class vid gordy better luck next time 😂
thanks Matt, you still riding? not seen a vid from you in ages!
No problem Gordy, but me and my did stop riding for winter since we decided it was very miserable and took up running for a hobby instead but now the weather is warming up me and my dad will start riding again and excitingly its my 14th birthday coming up so im getting a new full suspension bike so hopefully the quality of my videos improve and we go out more, anyways thanks for asking and have a nice day 😊
That was quite an ordeal you went through mate. Scary getting caught out in the open with no shelter and bad weather. Glad all ended well in the end.
cheers fella, yep should have been better prepped, just didn't consider it as it was supposed to be an easy red trail lol
Fair play Gordy, you’ve shown true resilience there mate. There’s a lesson for us all, not to take things for granted. Adam’s a top bloke too👍👍👍
Everytime ive done this red ive done it the opposite way never had a problem with signage until we got to the village diversion
how do you do it opposite? i thought it was one way? i think all the trail heads are well marked, iit's just the inbetween bits that are lacking. it may have been because there was so many diversions in place up the hill that day! and our own fault for clearly missing the left hand red arrow taking you back down lol. you live and learn eh haha
@DownhillDesireMTB actually may be a different trail your doing hard to tell cause of the diversions/wrong turns. Which 1 did you attempt?
Least favourite but you’ll never forget it 😀 great video 👍🏻
i'm trying too lol
Blimey mate, what an adventure (and not a nice one). If it's any consolation, it made for a great video 😂
lol, yea funny it was the one thing that helped keep spirits up! kept camera rolling and thought this should be entertaining lol
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 this vid absolutely cracked me up Gordy, utter nightmare ride but we still has such a laugh. Nice to be the hero of the hour too haha saved by the haibeast
proper saved the day mate 😀
did you not download a GPX on to your Garmin. been in similar situation doing coast to coast, on the first day took a wrong turn down hill which took us 12 mile in the wrong direction then had to climb back up. 11:30pm got to our Y.H
i didn't know how to, i have since learnt lol.
what a nightmare..! happened to me years ago (back in the 90s) when i cycled from newcastle to north shields, then the ferry to south shields, down to sunderland, along to fatfield - then was supposed to loop back via durham, consett and the derwent walk... but got lost and ended up at finchale abbey...! i only had a newcastle A-Z on me too..
i did a hard ride 3 years ago (freezing conditions and ill prepared with fingerless gloves etc) and that prompted me to buy an emtb... you thought about buying one?
i use garmin connect (and it connects to my strava) to plan routes these days and it helps a lot... but the downside is that (with having an emtb too i guess) is that i stick to the route rigidly and don't tend to do random rides anymore..
ebike will happen one day. i've just worked out routes etc for the garmin so hopefully this wont happen again!
Done exactly the same before the Christmas we ended up in Newcastleton before heading up that same road before we got to keilder castle car park cant beat a good adventure tho 😂👍
yea when i got home and checked strava we were on way to Newcastleton too. lol
Has your garmin not got maps on it. I had an edge explore years ago would take you back to the start. Like others have said though defo pack an emergency foil blanket they take up no room. Good video again.
yes but stupidly i've never really used it. i was so stressed i couldnt think straight to reduce map size, as ive never done it. had i learned how to zoom out the whole situation wouldn't have happened. I spent that night learning my garmin lol
Live and learn repeat most important thing is your safe and can do it all again
defo learnt some lessons from that ride!!
Wow, quite a day out you had there! Glad you got back okay. How far do you think you covered in the end?
just under 25 miles, 15 of them on the moors/hills. i can ride 25 gravel/road miles no bother on my hardtail, it was the constant climb that wiped me out in the firs3 hours that made the last road miles so hard. gotta work on my fitness!!
Did you not check Trailforks at all?
no signal up there!
U need a trail bike bit more easy for hills
100%. enduro bike is so overkill for this kind of ride!!! should have taken my hardtail but its crap lol, just use it for a bit of road gravel miles.
he changed before getting in the car and coming to find you?.....wtf.......
lol yea
