    Her mother was toxic. She called Sophia/Catherine ugly and clumsy. Catherine always had to prove her self to someone, maybe that's what made her so ambitious.

    Thank you for this! I love the book GREAT CATHERINE. I like historical biographies and try to find fair ones. It's too easy to imagine what their lives were like and to judge. We are human.

    I figured if I wanted to get married, I would love to incorporate the use of various religious rites and rituals at my ceremony reflecting on the diverse customs and mixed heritages of my ancestors and that of my husband's. When Sophia of Greece married her future husband Juan Carlos of Spain, she converted from Greek Orthodoxy to Roman Catholicism and celebrating both her Greek roots and that of her husband's, they had 2 weddings, one in the Greek Orthodox Church in Greece and another Roman Catholic wedding in Spain. I think they should have clergy from both churches officiate at the ceremony for the couple. After all, both churches had used the very selfsame prayers and still do, both during and after the Great Schism.

      And it is the same Jesus. As long as it is within christianity I´d also be happy to have priests/ pastors from different denominations if I got married in church. Today the large differences within christianity is often more straight through than between denominations. I am formally Lutheran (protestant), but I also visit the Catholic Church in our town, because I think the Catholic vicar here preaches very good, and actually preaches much more Lutheran than some so called Lutheran priests in my own church.
      I choose conservative preachers who preach the classic christian message.I go to church every sunday. I know when I am among sisters and brothers in faith, no matter what christian denomination. I do not like liberal theology. I´m theologically conservative. (And now I speak entirely of spiritual things, not the political terms liberal or conservative which is something entirely different, but theologically, not what is this worlds political concerns:)

    • @anailic3677
      @anailic3677 5 лет назад +8

      Yes, but but back then, at the age of 36 you would be considered old, especially if you are woman. Caterina/Sophia was only 16 or 17 at the day of her wedding. People had to grow up really fast back then. They didn't have prolonged childhood like us. Can you honestly imagine everidge 16 years old teenager of today to be expected to became empresses/queen and takes part in state affers?

      @@anailic3677 No, that can't be imagined. Adolescent are kept mentally children, even as there bodies are fast becoming adult. Nothing if anything is expected of them, so even when they hit the magical number of 18, they have not learned to become adults. I went through it myself.

      @@thevanished8185 Yeah, me too. And only 100 years ago, our forefathers would most likely already have first children by the age of 20. 20 was some border age to get married. Of course, there were always those who get married late, but they were rare. Today, that is the case only amongst the poor ones, because their parents can't afford to keep them for long.

    It is a beautifully done production and very romantic, but it bears almost no resemblance to reality. Names and places are the same. Catherine and Peter were married eight (8) years before she finally became pregnant via a lover, not Gregory Orlov as this movie shows. He came later.

    I believe this is the typical "Hollywood-Catherine", where she is portrayed as more or less "the heroe". I think some Russian productions I´ve seen are much more historically accurate. Also I think Peter III has been partly unjustly treated by both movie makers and history, as he was the one who lost, and didn´t write the history. At least I believe he saved Russian lifes by ending Russias involvement in the 7 years war. Catherine had him dethroned later, in 1762,(and maybe also killed. That is not for certainty known, if she was involved in that or not..) But one interesting thing is that contrary to rumours, and contrary to what Catherines biographers have written and claimed, I think there are good reasons to believe that Catherines son Paul, who in some ways reminded of Peter, actually WAS the biological son of Peter III, even if both Catherine and Peter had lovers, and even if Catherine gave birth to a daughter, who probably was daughter of her lover Saltykov. (In case of her I think Peter actually said that he was not the father, This of course was not the fault of the girl herself.) I think Catherine II and Peter III are actually ancestors of our present Swedish king, through one of Paul I:s daughters, Maria Pavlovna, born in 1786. I think that Catherine II and Peter III are grandfathers grandmothers grandmothers grandparents of our king - 8 generations back. So this is also a little Swedish history. Peter III also had both Russian and German ans well as Swedish royal ancestors. And yes - Catherine II also made a lot of wise descisions as ruler in Russia, so I want to be fair to her too.

    • @savagedarksider2147

      To be fair, Peter III didn't want the job and was force to become emperor of Russia.

    • @svenerikjohansson8130
      @svenerikjohansson8130 Год назад +1

      @@savagedarksider2147 Maybe more or less, but I think when he had the choice of becoming Swedish king or Russian tsar that he prefered the latter. He was also a candidate for the Swedish trhone, as he was a grancchilds child of our Swedish king Karl XI, ruling 1660-1697.
