I cannot in good conscience go to goodwill. They receive all their items for free and they overcharge customers. It really is just greed. Community thrift stores, the ReStore, garage sales are my go to. I feel your pain Renee!

People get mad at resellers for complaining about Goodwill prices or blame them for the increase in prices. I just want to know why places like Goodwill charge $3.99 for used washcloths or $2.99 for empty baking soda cans. That's more so my gripe about some thrift shops. And don't get me started about them attempting to sell yellowed, used take-out food containers haha. Perhaps I should make a video about that, people will really start chatting in the chat then!

GW is not worth my time as the merchandise is poor, prices too high, and the workers are underpaid while the executive staff make millions. And it seems the GWs are selling more new stuff that stores can’t sell.

I used to go daily to our local GW bins and be able to find some antiques and vintage to resell to dealers….i was a picker, and really enjoyed the social aspect as well as finding treasures.
Post covid I seldom go because the items are broken, very few antiques or vintage collectibles and well picked over with all the new resellers who started selling on line during covid.
When I’ve been to the local GW store I find the prices to be that of Walmart.
      I don’t do Walmart.
I prefer to patronize local Dollar General or Dollar Tree.
      Simply my experiences.
I prefer flea markets or auctions. I may pay more but it prevents getting my fingers cut on broken glass at the GW Bins!
I also don’t like the GW admin taking huge salaries while the GW staff at the bins ask me to round up my amount to the next dollar to help send someone to camp.
      Thanks for reading you all.

To me, thrifting is all about managing my own expectations. It is a treasure hunt, but.. if I expect to find treasure every time I WILL be disappointed. I live in the middle of nowhere and even my goodwill has raised their prices
(it's not too outrageous (YET) but still often more than I want to pay at a THRIFT store (esp when consignments/resales like threadup/Poshmark/depop make finding exactly what I want easier to find than ever))
However when thrifting in person my preference will always be for my smaller local stores because I know where that money goes(and it goes right back into my community, usually for charitable organizations like the animal shelter or womens shelter)
I won't cross goodwill off my list entirely.. but I'm aware of it's problematic nature.

I totally agree, good will has nothing but overpriced junk. Granted you can find your occasional privately owned thrifts that every once in awhile have something decent but it’s not worth the gas money. We find better items at flea markets and at auctions only sometimes the auctions are overpriced. It’s become more of a gamble now because there are more people in the resale game so you have to find your own niche. Where we live we have zero storage units for auction so that’s out for us but we do hit the group garage sales and find decent items. We find the bulk of our inventory in the summer and right after Christmas when everyone is cleaning out their extra stuff. Happy new year everyone ❤

We live in a rural area surrounded by farms. We have four small volunteer run thrift stores within a 35 - 45 minute radius of us. These places are NOT advertised at all - it is word of mouth. Two I didn't know about until 20 plus years in! Most prices are $1 or less and the goodies are incredible. Perhaps, you may have some hidden gems within your range you do not know exist? We live in northern Michigan. We do NOT visit traditional thrift stores unless we just happen to be in the area and have a few minutes we want to use up looking - RARELY! LOL! Just a thought for you - and am almost embarrassed suggesting as I have seen how knowledgeable you are over the past years.

I live in the same area as you, and the thrift stores are awful....especially Goodwill. Then you watch videos of thrift stores from other areas of PA and they are incredible! I guess it really just depends on where you live. The few things in our area are snatched up by the many resellers, some that sit there all day long waiting for new carts to come out. It used to truly be a fun treasure hunt, but most of the time now it is not worth it. Between the resellers and the prices, you don't stand much chance of finding anything special. I pretty much only buy clothes or books anymore - seems like the only thing that you can sometimes get a good deal on. Love your estate sale and storage units much better!

Everything I read says to put your energy into what you love and where your strengths lie. I guess you could put a lot of energy into thrifting to try to make it semi-exciting, but you could do other, spectacular things with that time & energy. I don’t care much for thrift stores - except for getting myself clothes. And maybe there are people out there who have a knack for them - but they don’t have cool love letters from Berlin, full of hope, romance, loss, and war to translate and preserve!

    • @PaperandMoose
      @PaperandMoose  9 месяцев назад +2

If I would ever find a collection of old letters at Goodwill, I would be shocked! They would probably never make it to the shelf, but be thrown out. Meanwhile the empty container of baking soda gets a $2.99 price sticker slapped on it. I don't think we will ever fully understand the ways of the thrift shop!

I do like to shop for myself at Salvation Army and while there, sometimes run across something neat. I prefer yard sales, estate sales, church rummage sales and sometimes auctions. GoodWill is also called Hoodwill and Ill Will. They either charge full retail, MORE than retail, or sell why-bother around here. Anything good mostly gets sent to on-line sales for way over what someone actually disadvantaged/disabled/poor can pay. Never mind resellers. I got lucky yesterday for the first time in ages - found mistakes probably rolled out and shelved minutes before I nabbed them. Lots of empty space on the shelves. Anything good is broken. Even the clothes racks had major holes...as do some of the clothes sometimes.
The Sally today did have a .99 color and I even bought some, but their prices have gone up too. They had plenty of jewelry, but it was all modern costume and may have been worth what they had on it. The sad moment at the Sally - two jewelery "jars" marked $29.99 with blue tags. Should have been half price. "Oh those are $30 each. There's a W written on paper, so they're white tags." (not unless my preschool teacher was lying they're not! But she was the Manager, so all I could say was "no thank you.")

In their defense they cannot control what ppl donate. I just feel that at the end of the week that color they are offering a discount should go down to 75% off instead of throwing the items away. We don't have bins in our County so the only way to discard the items is to throw them away. Hope you have better luck next time. That's awesome what Steve found you!

Retail thrift stores, esp. Goodwill IMO have majorly gone downhill in the last 5 years or so in terms of value for both money and time spent. Goodwill has been putting stuff online for at least 10, so the really quality stuff just isn't in the stores at any price, and what does get put on the shelves is so overpriced. The bins can be good if you're there the second it comes out. My personal fave go-to's are in person auctions & my network of storage locker buyers.

My local GW is now a returns store and many, many things are pallet items from big box stores. The worst part is that they put something out and then within the week throw those 'new' items in a cart and wheel them off presumably to the dumpster. They call that making room on the shelves. Meanwhile, the truly awful items languish for weeks and months. They have zero idea what they're doing these days. One person said they're going to unified pricing, another said no. I was told this week they're not selling towels anymore. They've already done away with curtains. One worker told me they're bringing out 800 carts a day, I think he might have meant home good items. He also said the GW brings out 15,000 racks of clothes, which of course is ludicrous, I hope he meant 1,500 pieces which seems more probable for a week though, not in a day. Since they're buying pallets now it certainly explains why the prices have gone up but the waste is incredible. I was told if clothes fall on the floor they get thrown out. There's almost zero chance of finding anything vintage anymore.

Wealthy people donate clothing to them and I have done very well there
We went to our flea market today and the Hippy Biker guy had a bunch of Alternative 1970s Comics. My girlfriend bought all the Robert Crumb ones
We might buy them all next week
She has been selling T Shirts like gangbusters, is hard for me to fathom what people pay for some of this stuff.

I enjoy going to the thrift shops other than GW. In my little town we have a Humane Society thrift shop for the kittys and puppies. The assurance home thrift store
In my town helps subsidize for a children’s home. Their prices are so much better and it is for a good cause Grandkid won!t go anywhere but Goodwill.

Dear Renee, if it is no fun for you going thrifting and making an exiting video of it. Don't do it. It is not worth your time. I enjoy your videos for the fun you get by finding strange or amazing stuff. By the way: I like when people find things for themselves. So if you got to a thrift store, not filming just looking for clothes or something else you found, I would like to see you later in your living room showing the things you found just for yourself and the fun you will maybe have with them. Just a thought. Have a wonderful new year!

You don't want the outing to become a chore, that's why you left the corporate scene. I guess sometime going is just a good reminder of why you enjoy other venues more. Perhaps make it a great day by going to a nice bakery in the area or on the way with a side of thrift. Like the vegetable beside the main dish. Now going as as part of your business, you can write off car expenses I hope to make it more palletable? Anyways, best of luck next time. 👍👍

I hate to say it, but the very thing that made GW is killing it now...resellers. They are scooping everything of any value at all, and leaving junk on the shelves, which eventually goes to the landfill. Then, GW gets into the fray themselves, by pricing everything way too high to be practical. This business model is not sustainable, and they are disappearing. So sad. Stick with what works for you! And, I really wish they would throw away chipped, cracked, and broken items. It's too depressing.

I picked up an oak office (not swivel) chair by the Milwaukee Chair Co. Early 1900's? Anyway, it was $5 and I'm sure a dime a dozen where you are, but it went perfectly with the mission /A&C table I already had. You can still scratch out one or 2 items at the bins, otherwise NADA at any Goodwill. Even our Re-Store got rid of the "thrift section". Boo! And it's not even Halloween.

I used to work at Goodwill.....it would really break your heart if you know about the stuff they throw away and the stuff you never see because it gets shipped to their online auctions and stores. This is Minnesota (I each state operates differently) and they got rid of any pricing less than $2.99. Anything deemed less than that was thrown out...there were no bundled bags of small toys, etc...those were thrown out. Same with books and dvds/cds...they check it before it it goes out on the floor...if it's any good it goes off to their online sales..if it's not it goes on the floor (why there are multiple copies ad nauseam of the Twilight and Fifty Shades of Grey series and not much else. The chance of vintage items, figurines, hankies, tablecloths, etc., making it out to the floor are almost nil. Box after box of donated items are never even opened and are just thrown away. The store I worked at was staffed almost entirely by teens and young adults that had no idea of the worth or value of most of the stuff that came in. It was horrible, I still have nightmares about it. Goodwill is NOT a charity....it's an exploitive, parasitic scam. Go to Salvation Army, St Vincent DePaul, local shelters, etc., do NOT shop or give to Goodwill, it isn't called Greedwill for nothing!

It's a bussiness, they know what shi... (sorry, wrong channel) things are worth and set prices accordingly. And we must assume, they sell where it pays best. If I dropped off a Gutenberg Bible at your local Goodwill, you wouldn't be able to pick it up as a cheap unreadable book there. That's why I prefer the scrap room at the dump here, where people throw in everything they don't see a use for after dead relatives. I have picked up many expensive books there, and if I knew about decorations and porcelain I could probably make a few bargains there too. Completely free. You just have to store things for a while before selling because they don't want people picking for free and reselling….

The two thrifters I watch more than any others are "Thrifting Vegas" and "The Niche Lady". They are both based in Las Vegas and it seems like they are always finding beautiful glass vases and figurines. I don't know if it is Vegas specifically, but some stores are just barren landscapes of discarded junk - as you saw in this video. Nothing exciting. You may try to expand your choice of stores and drive to upper scale neighborhoods for gems, but considering what you like to deal with, that may be a waste of time, too. I enjoy when you find some ephemera at the flea market and go thru it piece by piece. Have you thought of doing DIY on some of that stuff to make it a piece of art work to hang on the wall or use as decoupage on another project? Just stacks of paper/photos does not get my heart pumping.

I can get a lot of thier items for the same price at Targets! For many items, it’s not about being able to resell it’s just about common sense in what something should cost. I always revert to the $3.99 price tag on a used washcloth, for a single, used, washcloth. How does that make sense??
