10 Times Where Using A Known IP Was Worse - • 10 Times Where Using A...
Board games like to make good use of IP's these days, and sometimes I prefer something more original...other times I embrace the use of the IP. Here are some of my favorite IP's on board games.

For me, it's Legendary Alien. Not a huge deck building fan but the IP is used so well in game, it really makes you feel like you're in the movies.
I have to agree
I've been having a lot of fun with Sniper Elite: the Board Game recently. It's a tense cat-and-mouse experience for both the sniper and the defenders.
That's one I considered for this list :)
I signed up for Tak when it was a Kickstarter, since I LOVED Name of the Wind. If any of y'all haven't read it, you haven't lived.
I plan to read it....right now just loving the game.
My favorites in my collection are Deep Rock Galactic, Horrified, CDMD, Resident Evil, and Marvel Zombies. I still need to get Vampire the Masquerade Chapters and Darkest Dungeon to the table at some point. Those are actually the only IP games I own. I've stayed away for the most part due to 90s childhood trauma of VERY BAD IP cashgrab Monopoly titles. 🤣
Edit: NVM I totally forgot about Assassin's Creed.
Love the little snippet of fun.!
Thank you for this video! I had a similar trajectory with Mind MGMT. I didn't like the art at first, then I read the comic, and then I really appreciated the art. Reading the comic really helped to understand and visualize the game concept too. It's kind of like Battlestar Galactica where everyone playing should at least watch the pilot first. Speaking of, where does Battlestar Galactica fall on your list beyond 12?
Bsg is one of the best implementations of a thematic game. But I don't actually love the game itself. I find it's way too long for a hidden role game
Thanks for your service and opinions!
Always :)
You are correct, Resident Evil is a 3rd person shooter, not 1st person. And yes, The witcher started as a book/novel
Thanks :)
Two of them have been FPS now so kind of true?
@@alexponcio2114 it's more than 2. Main game there's 2, 7 and 8, other than that there's survivor 1 and 2, dead aim and a bunch of Wii and arcade. I think it's around 7 or maybe even more. But that is not the case, Alex is talking about the first resident evil, which is what th board game is based on and that one is a third person shooter
@@dav1dgear I don’t consider those to be in the genre of “FPS”, they’re “light gun shooters”/“arcade, on rails”.
@@alexponcio2114 where did you get that information? Wikipedia? Try playing the game itself and you'll find out that re survivor is an fps. It's 100% not on rails since you can move freely in first person mode. On rails means you do not have controls of where your character is moving, like a train on its rail hence the name on rails. Yes it support light gun but doesn't mean that it's not an fps. It's very different from on rail light gun shooter. They even remove light gun support on the PS2 version.
Re umbrella chronicles, now that is an on rail light gun shoiter
Oh sweet sweet heman. Can't get enough of this game. Also the 2000s show is on Amazon so it helps set the mood when I play it
Lol nice, enjoy :)
Marvel Champions is probably one of my fav games I table way more than any other. With that and United and Zombies the IP for me helps elevate because I can set up epic battle with my fav heroes and villains so there is a narrative element a non IP would lack.
Resident Evil 4 was teased when the last one delivered. It is a more action oriented game where the zombies turn into super zombies randomly when you kill them.
MOTU is one of the most frustrating games I have ever played. It is fun but it feels unfinished like someone said "Ok the game isn't fully play tested and we haven't performed quality checks but the investors say ship now" The scenario and rule books were error ridden, the cards were error ridden, and the solo mode was half a$$ed.
I'm sorry to hear your experiences on motu, I've so far enjoyed it a lot, although I definitely won't speak for balance 🙂
Great video thanks Alex! I really want to play Elder Scrolls BotSE. I love Skyrim and I love TMB. Catchullu DMD is also on my list. There are too many games! There's just too many great games! I wish I could hit the lotto so I could play them all.
6 Siege, Witcher and MOTU:Clash for Eternia are all amazing games indeed 👍🏻
Yep :)
I think a very underated ip board game is doom. You need some one to be the overlord. I think there are custom single player rules on bgg.
Cyberpunk 2077 Gangs of Night City didn't make the cut eh?
I like the game, but not top 10
A shame so few actual Cthulhu universe films are any good (a handful of indie films are laudable, but none of the bigger budget films are good), especially considering its public domain. Instead, there's a ton of horror-adjacent / sci-fi-adjacent films that feature Cthulhu universe inspired creatures and those films are (like all) hit and miss. I've seen several Cthulhu universe board game playthroughs and definitely look forward to experiencing some of them. Definitely want to play Mind MGMT, curious to play TAK (loved the first book in the series but early in the 2nd book I was completely burned out on the lead character's narcissism despite the world building being pretty great). I'm curious why they haven't reprinted the deluxe version, has the game overall not sold that well? I'm curious to play Frostpunk board game. I love the computer game, can't quite imagine how it works as a board game.
I have to imagine it wasn't worth the effort to profit, although I do want it myself 🙂
What's the thing above and to the right of Alex's head (looks like it might be some kind of monster made of Lego)?
Horizon Zero Dawn figure :)
@@BoardGameCo Gut chodesh, Alex. Is it from one of the Steamforged games?
My favourite IP-based game is also my #1 game of all-time (in large part due to the IP): Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Change is Constant. Also TMNT: City Fall and all the other KS goodies. It's a really good game with a cool dice sharing mechanism and is based pretty faithfully on the IDW comic book series, which many TMNT fans consider the definitive edition of the Turtles, at this point. At least the first 100 issues.
Glad you're enjoying it 🙂 I did play the later versions, but it didn't land for me
Apex Legends is also a board game based off a shooter that could have been on this list. And sorta kinda Dying Light, though one could argue that one is more of a first person adventure/parkour game.
I've played and enjoyed both, but neither would make my top 10
I think mine right now is Slay the Spire, the Board game allows me to play the game I love multiplayer.
I absolutely should have included that one
My favorite IP game has been Monster Hunter World the board game. Played so many hours.
Good choice!
It did start as a book (witcher)
Thanks!
Is it still an ip when it enters the public domain?
It's a PIP!
Lol I was barely sure myself
Sad that there's no LOTR game here. Fun list tho
None have wowed me yet
@@BoardGameCo I love Journeys in Middle Earth, but a big factor in me liking it is it being LOTR. Similar to your Marvel United I think. Good game without it, but I've only gone all in and replay it because its LOTR
Dune Imperium is 6th on BGG
Nice :)
“Mythic Games has a very poor track record as far as deliverability.” 6:05 That is quite a nice way of saying that Mythic has stolen millions of dollars from their backers. Why on earth would you promote a game from this company?
Because if the game is good and you have the opportunity to trade or buy it used, then as far as I'm concerned, a good game is a good game. I'm not going to warn you away from the game, I'm going to warn you away from the company. There's a difference.
@@BoardGameCo What you said was hardly a warning. It was barely a harsh criticism, to the point where someone who wasn’t burned by Mythic might go buy this game from them when they can’t find it elsewhere (as you, thankfully, recommended). And I know you’re not naive enough to believe promoting a company’s game is different than promoting that company. It doesn’t matter if the game is the best game ever. This company defrauded your viewers of millions of dollars and their games should not appear on any of your lists. If you want to be a leader and an influencer in our community you need to do better.
@@healthygamingnetwork4980As someone else who backed the game and was required to pay more than I agreed to, I disagree. If a view gets a chance to play or buy a copy, they should - it's excellent. There's a 99% chance that any copy they find will be second hand anyway.
Frostpunk
Good choice :)
No Star Wars games???
None cross that line for me
Ping. 😏
Ping?
@@BoardGameCo ACK / Pong!
😁😁😁
(when tech meets board games)
9:15 classic resident evil games aren't exactly third person shooter. People usually define them as "survival horror" games and they have fixed camera angles. Starting with resident evil 4 the series went for third person (in fact RE4 is the game that kind of defined the over the shoulder angle that so many third person shooters use nowadays).
Totally makes sense
Dude, Resident Evil isn't a Shooter. It's Survival Horror 🙄
Lol the eye roll really sells it
It was a different time and place but did you know Lovecraft was a racist? You should read his cat's name :P
He wasn't a racist by today's standards. He was a product of the times. His cat was black with that name and he absolutely adored that cat... He wouldn't name something he loved with something he hated. His beliefs of black people was just wrong. His love for cats even extended into his story "Cats of Ulthar."
@@jdonnelly1977 That's why I said "different time and place". He was a racist though, just because it was normal doesn't change that.
@@p0ck3tp3ar fair enough.
I'm aware of his background unfortunately.
He was intensely racist even for his era. Being of his era is not even slightly an excuse. Doesn't mean someone can't enjoy his works or the world he helped create - he is super dead.
