I read Vicker of Wakefield earlier this year and loved it. If it wouldn’t have been for the very convenient ending I would have it as a favorite this year!
    Had me laughing throughout.

I was really surprised at how funny/silly it was! I agree that the ending didn't quite stick the landing but it was great fun

I Loved H&P also🥰 I think I was more focused on the relationships and the ability to become a mentor/ father figure even when there is no memory of them prior to the next time you see them.

There were so many great themes in such a little book! I could have talked about it for ages haha

Thx very much and happy (belated) birthday. I have the Jean d'Arc bio on Audible, but it's behind one or two but I am looking forward to it. Take care.

Kudos for brilliant idea to introduce a book and then *put it behind you* on the shelf, so it was visible but you didn't need to be holding it up to the camera. Brilliant idea!

I completely agree with your point around 5:52, coming-of-age/university period stories are so popular. I understand why, it is a fascinating time and it is the formative point in a person's life, but they do seem disproportionately covered. I find that more and more I am less interested in this and I want to read about characters that are more at the same life stage (or older!)

Absolutely, it is a really fascinating transition period. Being solidly outside of young adulthood now myself, I'm really interested in older protagonists too. Life doesn't stop throwing curve balls after 25, ha.

A finite array of books to chew on avariciously for the summer in its final closing act 🍽 Classics may stay, endure the test of time even, but their popularity and relevancy shift and fade with every successive generation. The Vicar of Wakefield: perfect illustration of this point ✅. I'm currently reading Dox Quixote, the John Rutherford translation published by Penguin Classics that has preserved the long sentence structure, an aesthetic I personally prefer and fleshed out the humour of the text. Though it is over 1,000 pages, the episodic formatting reminiscent of modern-day sitcoms makes for a digestible ride through. I am immensely enjoying it thus far. It is the first modern novel! I'm noticing early on the recurrent theme of deception as a social phenomenon and as something self-inflicted, in the case of the Don himself, something overlooked by BookTubers where the focus in the main is on the dichotomy between reality and fantasy personified in the relationship between Don Quixote and Sancho Panza. I hope you're enjoying summer

Absolutely - some former well-beloved classics are now largely forgotten. Victorians thought Aurora Leigh was one of the best poetical works of the century, but nowadays it's barely read.
Don Quixote is an absolute delight! An excellent choice, and I'm glad you're enjoying his and Sancho's adventures. I read the translation by Motteux I think (the Wordsworth edition), which was somewhat old-fashioned but the story sparkles regardless. Happy reading!

@@TheEclecticLibrary I'm pleased you think Don Quixote an excellent choice. There are so many layers and references in the novel that I am finding myself highlighting and annotating in the margins quite extensively. Started reading on August 2nd. A lot of people prefer the Edith Grossman edition the most modern version. Something tells me you may wish to pick up either of the translations (Rutherford/ Grossman) to really relish the story. But then again, translated literature is always a tricky bunch 😎Take care Celine

Just picked up Vicar of Wakefield and All Passions Spent is on the wish list, as are the Christine de Pisan and Virginia Woolf books. Not sure I'll get to the latter two, but they sound like great ideas for books.
